Definitely a book in the pipeline, @Elementary Penguin.

@Joe is knocking parts into shape to have them fact-checked.

I know because I have already been asked to take a look when it’s near to finished.

So far as I know, not actually having seen a page yet, the focus will be on the Beatles relationship with drugs.

Thanks for the information @Ron Nasty

I look forward to hearing more about this book in the future as it sounds like it could be an interesting read.

Hey joe

You mentioned earlier that you were hoping to release a book.

I’m not sure if it mentioned anywhere else on this site so I do apologise if you have to repeat yourself but did you end up publishing the book or is it still in the works?

Also are you able to give some information about the book as well?

Well done on the site by the way.

Hi EP.

I’ve been trying to get it finished for ages. I finished writing the final chapter yesterday, but I still have to do the afterword (which is likely to be fairly long).

As RN said it’s about The Beatles and drugs. I’ll announce the title and more info shortly. The book will have two parts, and part one is with my editor at the moment. I’ll send off part two to her this week. When I get back the subbed/proofed version I’ll send the whole thing to some selected beta readers for feedback.

I also need to commission some cover art, sort out the formatting, layout and typography, make sure the bibliography and citations are all correct, sort out a promo plan, publish it and do the marketing. It all takes a long time, which partly accounts for my absences here. I only really get about four hours a day to work on it, so progress has been a little slow, but I’m hoping to have it on sale sometime this summer.

So once it is on sale (and in my hands very shortly thereafter), you might be more active? a-hard-days-night-george-4You seem like you’d be a very skilled player at the picture/song game!

Also, should this be in Altogether Now or Getting Better ? It seems like this thread would fit better in Getting Better .

@Joe Two questions for ya!

Have you ever been to the US? If so, what did you think?

What is your favorite part of living in the UK?

Yes, I went to New York for new year in 2004/5 (mainly Manhattan with a flying visit to Brooklyn). I loved it. Ellie and I got engaged in Central Park. One day we’ll take the kids there.

There’s so much I’d like to see of America. We’re toying with the idea of a huge road trip for my 50th (I’m 41 now), going coast to coast. But it’s some way off. Fortunately Trump will be out of the way by then. I’m concerned with the direction the country is going in right now at the top level.

I’m not sure what I most like about the UK. There’s a lot to dislike about it right now, with the rise of the far right, Brexit, the hegemony of the hateful Conservative Party, Nigel Farage etc. Just awful, disgusting people. I have to remain hopeful that the Overton window will move back to a more caring, kinder society based on equality rather than self-interest, but at the moment that feels a long way off.

Really, what’s keeping me here is familiarity, inertia, all my friends and family being here, and lack of a viable alternative. If anyone knows of a not-too-expensive, broadly left-wing, non-nationalist, non-violent country where people speak English and don’t obsess over sport, with good public services, decent weather and Amazon Prime, I’m all ears.

I suppose a lot of what I like is the heritage of this country. We gave the world a lot of amazing cultural and technological gifts, which cumulatively are quite remarkable for a small island. It’s also quite lovely in many places, although the philistines have been doing their best to undo that since WW2 (I grew up in the city of Bath which is one of the most beautiful on the planet). We don’t have the monopoly on any of this, but we do OK.

It’s fine where it is.

I don’t think the book’s going to make me all that much money. It’s really something I want to do for myself, though if anyone wants to buy a copy I’d be delighted! So once it’s out I need to think about how to earn a living (I’m getting by on a redundancy settlement at the moment). I’ve mostly parked my other projects for the time being to focus on the book.

I’m not sure I’ll spend much more time here on the forum afterwards, and I tend to ignore the forum games anyway. I really need to write more, get up to date on news stories etc, and make the whole site better. There’s a lot of general admin I need to get better at too (eg checking and answering emails), and I don’t want the mods to feel quite so neglected, so I’ll do what I can.

My guess would be that he’d give it to one of the mods, even if Ellie was still around he’d probably do this because she’s never online, my guess would be meanmistermustard, but Ahhh Girl and Zig both have a fair chance as well.

You’re projecting. I didn’t suggesting any political ideology is pure and non-corrupt. I also wasn’t referring to the US, and I don’t recognise the problems you listed as being especially applicable to the UK.

Thanks EP. The subject chose me, really. I wrote a feature on the subject which has always been one of the top five most-popular features on this site (see the Top Ten Club list at the foot of this page). There seems to be a huge and ongoing interest in the subject, and every time I post a drug-related Beatles story on social media it does crazily well. I always wanted to write a book, and was wondering what it might be about, but the answer seemed quite obvious.

That feature has about 8,000 words (and really needs some extra work), but the book is currently just shy of 100,000, and I haven’t yet written the epilogue.

I’ve cleared the deck to get this book out, but when that’s done I’ll be working on this site and other online projects. It’s likely to be the other side of summer, as I’ll have to look after my kids during the holidays. It’s quite hard to work at home when they’re running around and fighting and nagging me for stuff!

So yeah, I have lots of ideas but need to prioritise what I do, so I can feed my family when the savings run out. Not sure yet what I’ll do first.

Hey Joe, how shall I inform you if one of your articles has an inaccuracy. I am asking this because a few of your personal/instrumentation sections are a little off. Should I PM you, should I mention it in the specific song’s thread, should I say it in this thread, or should I file a claim at the bottom of the article’s page.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.
