The death of GM has me wondering, @Joe, if you have a set of obits ready to go on the remaining major players in the story that you just slot the details of the day into? Or is it more, learn the news, and – after taking a few moments to reflect – start thinking about the bee-hatch of having to update the main site to address the story?
I think you did a wonderful job with the article covering George’s death.

The Beatles Bible 2020 non-Canon Poll Part One: 1958-1963 and Part Two: 1964-August 1966
Actually, I was thinking about this when Bowie and Lemmy died, when I realised that the next decade is going to see a lot of legends fall like dominoes.
No, I don’t have anything prepared. I cobbled together the George story this morning before work, and added to it as the day rolled on.
I know I should draft something for the major players – Paul, Ringo and Yoko at a minimum. It’s be easy enough to write a few paragraphs on their lives and work, then I could just slot in some Twitter tributes and official statements after the event.
Glad you liked the George article. I think if Paul or Ringo died I’d have to put together a larger tribute, and put the site in full obit mode, so it makes a lot of sense to plan it in advance.

All major media outlets have obituary procedures and profiles prepared in advance, and not just for the royals. It’s a bit weird, perhaps distasteful, but better than publishing or broadcasting an ill-thought-out tribute.
The BBC’s obits procedure for a category 1 royal death (that’s the big four – Liz, Phil, Chas and Will) is incredibly detailed. As soon as the palace confirms the news all scheduled programming stops, all web indexes redirect to the main homepage which gets black livery, and wall to wall tributes follow. Don’t expect any other story to get a look in, at least on the major channels.

This sounds like something the royal family would do, they write their obituaries out. Pardon me, but I don’t really like it.
It does seem a bit macabre, but I’ve heard of some people who had planned memorial ceremonies for themselves while they were still alive. Part of me thinks it would be cool to hear all the nice things people say about you when you are alive to fully appreciate it. Then, when you end up on the wrong side of the dirt, a party could be thrown to celebrate your life.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

When you’re deeply attached to something, I don’t think a tribute can really be ill thought out.
It can be if the person is overwhelmed with grief.

You might be interested to know that Hunter Davies wrote obits for each of the Beatles in 1967. Only John wanted to see his own. Here’s an article in which Hunter describes it, and also his response to reading his own more recent obits:

Page not found for that link @Joe.
Out of interest will/do you write or contribute to the BBC obituaries of Paul and Ringo seeing as you know what you’re talking about and actually have a deep knowledge of them as well as a highly respected site?
"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)
Oops, sorry. Link should be OK now.
BBC obits are run in London by a guy called Nick Serpell. They’re always prepared well in advance of being needed (apart from for younger stars, I’d imagine), with TV, radio and online packages, and are revisited and updated periodically.
I’ve never been asked to contribute, though I have informally advised on several Beatles-related BBC things (not obits). Generally I prefer not to get involved to a greater extent, as I barely have enough time to devote to my own projects. And I always refuse to go on air. I get those requests every Now And Then , and nothing could interest me less!

Well, just make sure you don’t accidentally publish any of them early like the infamous CNN incident.
I'm Necko. I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

@Joe, what are special ranks? Are they like custom titles?

@Starr Shine?
Forum ranks are A Beginning, St Peter’s Church etc, up to Apple Rooftop. If I wanted I could give people a different badge for achieving a rank, but I don’t think it would work in the space available. There’s also an option to grant people extra permissions if they reach a certain rank, but I don’t want to use that here.
They’re just called forum ranks in the admin panel, but I think it’s the same thing.

Interesting, would the badges work like the mod badges?

I believe so, yes. They’d certainly be very small, which is why I chose not to implement them.

Hey @Joe
You mentioned earlier that you were hoping to release a book.
I’m not sure if it mentioned anywhere else on this site so I do apologise if you have to repeat yourself but did you end up publishing the book or is it still in the works?
Also are you able to give some information about the book as well?
Well done on the site by the way.
And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

Definitely a book in the pipeline, @Elementary Penguin.
@Joe is knocking parts into shape to have them fact-checked.
I know because I have already been asked to take a look when it’s near to finished.
So far as I know, not actually having seen a page yet, the focus will be on the Beatles relationship with drugs.
