I’ve only listened to the first one, but it’s brilliant! Sounds a lot like 1970-72 Pink Floyd to me (of course I’d bring them up!), the harmonies included.
I thought it was more Brian Wilson, at least the beginning. Or perhaps it was 1970 Pink Floyd doing Brian Wilson (no, wait, that’s a song called ‘Summer ’68’)…
Five minutes ‘quite long’…. hah Gotta love normal non-Floyd-fan people.
I thought the vocals were quite nice. The recording was excellent… I wish, I wish, I wish…
Anyway, great job, @Leppo!

Thanks to all of you who have shared your music with us.
As a matter of fact, I have been writing songs, on and off, for more than two decades. Not many, mind you; it’s never been my primary occupation, and I’m not that creative it seems. I started when I was twenty-six, after watching “Bring on the Night”, a film about Sting and the Blue Turtles. Until then my main musical heroes had been The Beatles. I composed for several years, till my daughter was born –then there was no more time, or energy left, only a long hiatus. Only recently have I started to compose again. Anyways, when I saw what Sting’s band was doing, I learned many cool jazz chords which I’m not using now –I’ve gone back to the very basics. I’ve always composed ballads and pop music, stealing shamelessly from The Beatles. Some of my songs aren’t that bad. Now at my age, my hope is to meet a couple of old musicians like me, try to perform live, do some home recording and post our music on YouTube. By the by, what on earth is “soundcloud”?

Yes I write songs, fairly terrible ones, some with words. I also do covers and parodies, ghastly things. I’m getting things together so I can go out and terrorize people with a kazoo and ukulele, so I’ve written a few songs with them already, but I need to do a few more to make a set workable. I find writing quite hard, I really need to be word-inspired and have a reasonable melody and it doesn’t happen every day.

I’ve been writing songs for a few years now and practicing my vocals as well. I always seem to get stuck at making the melody stick though. As a poet and writer lyrics are generally easy for me to write but, when it comes to making a song that isn’t a total mess of emotion I’m still learning. I picked up guitar recently to maybe help with my problem. It’s good to see we have quite a few songwriters here!

Ive been writing since I was little. Its the opposite for me. I can’t seem to ever come up with lyrics to fit the melodies and instrumentals that I write.

I can never write decent words and whenever a write what I think is a catchy tune it seems to come out sounding like ‘Puff the magic dragon’! I never finished this one fully but this instrumental is probably the only song I have written.

Thanks for the kind comments @pepperland & @Beatlebug
I’ve had so many people say it sounds Brian Wilson/Pink Floyd which I’m not complaining about but it surprises me because The Beatles was the main influence but then I suppose those other artists were also influenced by them. It was recorded on my laptop in mine and a friend’s living room so not exactly Abbey Rd.

Hey @Sugarplum fairy, I liked it! If you want to add lyrics, my humble advice is: just follow the chord changes (very nice) for the melody and brainstorm for words. Leave the solo as, er, a solo, and make the song longer.

@MrMoonlight when you said you’d only been playing guitar a year I thought I was going to regret hitting the play button but I really like it. I can hear a real strong Lennon influence and you’ve got a good voice and some nice guitar. Excellent

Lovely, @MrMoonlight . I certainly agree with what StrawberryWalrus said, you’ve got an incredibly dreamy voice; much better than a good amount of the artists I’ve heard! Your guitar skills seem rather developed, too! If I had one, I’d sign you to my record label in the blink of an eye.
As for me, I’ve tried writing songs before. So far I’ve only got one terribly childish ditty, an entire page of lyrics to one, pieces of a melody/rhythm section to another, and plenty of miscellaneous lyrics and other ideas that haven’t quite formed anything yet. I hope to learn guitar, complete them and flesh them out at some point, though I’d also love to collaborate with someone for some of them. Maybe one day I’ll find someone willing enough to help me.

I have, but only a few, and they were quite dreadful. I’ve written a novel, though, does that count?

Can you tell us anything about the novel; plot, genre, published?

It’s pretty much an bunch of friends having some crazy adventures in an alternate reality. So it’s kind of sci-fi, I suppose? It’s more a mixture of genres, really. I’ve written it in English because I wanted to expand my vocabulary and work on my grammar. I’ve let a few close friends read it and they said it’s very good, but I have no intentions of publishing it. I might try another one, though. If I can come up with a slightly less crazy plot, I’d love to give it another bash. It was nearly 300.000 words, so quite a lengthy thing. I loved writing it. I have an incredibly vivid imagination, so most of it just poured out of my head without even trying.

I’m no expert on these things but it’s a place where you can upload your songs. Like youtube you can set it as private or let anyone listen and comment on them. You can listen like a radio station similar to spottify only with original music. People can also download your tracks if they like them.
I used it to upload some bare tracks I did for the Beatles Bible Band rather than the filedrop services which I could never make work! Once your track is on soundcloud you also have a URL to share it like on youtube which is what I did for my track above. 🙂

Thanks a lot. Perhaps some time in the future I’ll record and post some of my stuff. Although there must be hundreds of thousands of amateur and professional musicians doing it… There must be another way… 😮

You should. Soundcloud has everything from weird stuff to conventional and comments to suit but posting here is a good non-judgemental place to start. Your reply to my song is a good example 🙂

Soundcloud was a fantastic place for unknown bands and musicians (myself included) to reach a much larger audience than would normally be possible. But Soundcloud brought in some big changes to their site just over a week ago which is going to make it very difficult to continue to do this. It’s quite sad and a lot of Soundcloud users are unhappy about it. Basically previously you could promote your songs by submitting them to various groups i.e indie, rock etc where people could discover them. But Soundcloud have decided to remove the groups so reaching a wide audience is almost impossible now. I have my own conspiracy theories about this. Who would be unhappy about new artists reaching a wide audience without having to go to the big record companies?
The big record companies of course and there have been recent rumours of them wanting a slice of Soundcloud.
