When I was in Budapest, I was standing outside the academy of science and a van rolled up with a camera guy and a presenter. They looked to be recording something for the news as the presenter’s microphone had a logo on it.
This is all fine and dandy, the presenter was wearing his traditional garb- shirt, tie, jacket….and shorts, it’s practical when you’re only filmed from the middle of your chest upwards and it’s 26 degrees.
I laughed, anyways…peculiar sight.
He looked like this

I think it is oppressive to make men wear sports coats. They need to be freed! I’ll join the march to end their suffering.

Apparently those suit jacket/shorts/boat shoes combos are a popular thing in the states. Can’t understand it at all, myself

I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

If you had to work in a professional setting most places in the US in the summer, I fancy you would.

Just me in the house, listening to my new Hunky Dory CD, occasionally singing along*, whilst puttering about the warmly-lit kitchen on a rainy afternoon.
*That person who can resist the enticement of ‘Life On Mars?’ without belting along is a stoic person indeed, and not me

Oh the ‘dress lightly for the heat’ thing I understand. It’s just the weird juxtaposition of formal and casual dress that boggles me. If it were up to me, I’d have people just go all the way or not at all, rather than having a bizarre looking mashup of both

I really hope so. It frustrates me that the UK still persists with quite regimented uniforms, particularly in schools. Dressing formally should be a personal choice.

Since when have Americans as a whole had any particular qualms about weirdly juxtaposing formal and casual dress?

My inner libertarian is inclined to agree; for what it’s worth, however, I once heard something to the effect that, if you have to wear a uniform, it can lend a certain seriousness and focus to your academic life and eliminate distractions of who’s wearing what and who has nice clothes and who has ratty clothes, etc. etc.

^^ as a fellow libertarian (though of rather different stripes ), I know what you mean with the latter part. That’s what I heard from teachers and so on who were in favour of keeping the school uniform, but for my last two years (which we call sixth form) we didn’t have to wear a uniform, and to be honest the novelty wore off pretty quickly, and it just became the norm. I imagine it would be the same in most workplaces. Plus, I think most people would appreciate the opportunity to express themselves a little, because it can be quite dehumanising being surrounded by hundreds of other people who are dressed the same as you.

I say
I’ve never attended a school […] and I’m quite happy that way.
(I’m home-schooled, unless you count college) so I can hardly speak with any authority on this subject

The UK also seems to be just about the only country in Europe or North America that generally insists on it

That warm scritchy feeling you get on your palms after roughing them up slightly climbing a tree.

You know what’s nice? Sitting in the evening air strumming your guitar. You know what’s nicer? Doing it in a tree.
It’s kind of tricky, though.

Also that sweet woody smell of the bark on your palms — it is . Sidenote, I have discovered that the food of life, chocolate, tastes twenty times better when you eat it with that sweet woody smell on your hands.

I get a huge sense of peace from forests/trees. Don’t think I could live without them. Mountains — green forested ones — give me a very similar sense of comfort, albeit even more so.
