I don’t fully believe in the concept of guilty pleasures, but some of the music that I like could be considered guilty pleasures. I love a good 70s roadtrip song like Hooked on a Feeling or Brandy and I do enjoy a lot of songs by ABBA. I also like some standards from the Rat Pack, they can be really comforting. I don’t listen to most mainstream pop music because I don’t enjoy most of it, but I have to admit that I like a few songs by Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars and a few other artists. Not most of their work, but some of it managed to surprise me. I haven’t listened to any full albums from these artists, I just like a few of their songs so far.Have a great day everyone!
Finally, another ABBA fan!
I suppose this can be a guilty pleasures post from me as well…

ABBA had some brilliant songs. ‘The Day Before You Came’ is exceptional.
They were viewed as cringe cheesy for years until ‘Mamma Mia’ and now seen as of the greatest bands ever. They are someone in the middle, tho I hate ‘Dancing Queen’ (interesting to hear it in its unedited version where the opening is so different with an extra verse),

TDBYC is a masterpiece.
They did a few utterly trite songs but they did lots of fabulous songs – many of which are in their back catalogue. But the vocal harmonies (and the bass guitar parts) are the icing on the cake for me. So warm and fuzzy!
Random story time:
I was watching an ABBA documentary a year or so ago, and some gay celebrity (can’t remember who) said that ABBA was a gay icon for so long (get it? So Long? Nevermind…), and the public shunned ABBA for a long time until Mamma Mia came out, then ABBA was suddenly cool again.
And you know what? If ever there was a band that would appeal to the really stereotypical flamboyant gay person, ABBA was it. My god, those costumes that were worn 46 years ago today when they won Eurovision.

Where are the ones that aren’t in their back catalogue?

ABBA have been discussed a good few times on here. One of my posts goes off on one on a song called ‘Two For The Price Of One’ which is on ‘The Visitors’ as it is one of the worst songs I can remember hearing. A joke song that was never slightly amusing and got more annoying due to just being atrocious and sung terribly. I also remember Pete Waterman speaking some massive pile of guff about ‘The Winner Takes It All’ making out it was one of the greatest songs ever.
However, ignoring the stupid celebs and the large pile of garbage that does exist, some of their music really is brilliant. When the four got it right they could make brilliant music but a number of times it was just crap. Even if you go to the two ‘Gold’ albums there a lot of much garbage on them, especially ‘More Gold’.
Their best compilation is ‘The Singles: The First Ten Years‘. It’s impossible to say ‘DQ’ should be excluded so it’s pretty much a flawless overview of their best songs.
Whatever happened to the new material that was coming out by them?

I like this version of “The Day Before You Came”:
I used to like ABBA but then I heard their hits on repeat and I’m a bit over them. I really should check out their back catalogue.

True
I’d argue The Winner Takes It All, Waterloo and The Name of the Game are all very worthy of being called fabulous – especially the later.

Much of The Visitors is some of the worst music I’ve ever heard. 6 of the 9 tracks on it are tracks I totally despise.

That’s certainly ABBA’s 23 most famous songs… whether it’s their best? I disagree. Only 6 songs from their first 3 albums? Hmph.

As far as I can tell it’s as slow as death, also known as the McCartney Archive releases. But we should get it this year, apparently.

Ugh, I’ve adored ABBA for years now! I love “One of Us” and “Fernando and “Lay All Your Love On Me,” and I don’t mind their ‘overplayed’ hits, either. A lot of their songs make for some feel-good karaoke with friends, and when “Dancing Queen” comes on at a school dance it’s nice to have a song come on that isn’t hip-hop or trap. (I can’t stand Mamma Mia! though. I love Meryl Streep but my god those feels are soooo cheesy)

I have songs by Britney, Barry Manilow (take 1 of ‘Mandy’ is far better than the commercial version), Christina Aguilera, Right Said Fred, Celine Dion, Shania Twain and god knows what else. I don’t care what others think about that, they’re not listening and I like the songs.
I love “I Feel Like A Woman “– a very spunky song from a very spunky lady that works well as a fun confidence booster/karoake-with-friends song.

As if I’d trust the musical taste of a man who doesn’t like Something
only joking of course Walrian might have to kill me if I unironically get into ABBA though

Hey… I’ve said I’ve started to warm to it now, so I guess that means you have to trust me now?
I’ll have to give Walry some ABBA tracks too then…

From personal experience, my appreciation for ABBA started off ironically, but has since become very deeply felt. They’re so damn good

You crazy? I knew they were go-od from the start.
My guilty pleasure is Drake. And I also started listening to him ironically. He just has great singles. I even bump Tootsie Slide. Don’t know why. Like I know it’s very lazy music but I just keep listening to it.

I do the same thing. Staying on one vivid train of thought helps me calm my buzzing brain down enough to fall asleep.
I think this thread is for musical guilty pleasures, though…
