Am I right in saying you are a Man Utd fan @trcanberra ? This is going to be a close game and Man Utd have improved massively since last season. I think Man Utd have a slight edge as Pep seems to be still trying to impose his ideas and perhaps needs more time for the team to gel fully.
I’m a West Ham fan and we did Man Utd a big favour in getting Aguero a ban (which I’m sad had no benefit to us).

Yes, very much so @Leppo.
The first match I ever saw was in the mid-60s at Old Trafford – coincidentally against West Ham; when Charlton, Best and Law in their prime saw us to a 3-0 win which was one step towards the title that year.

Unfortunately, being a Hammer myself, the most common view of them is one of two variations of a line. At the end of the season it’s usually, “Why couldn’t they keep playing like they were in the first half of the season?” or else it’s “Why couldn’t they have played like that in the first half of the season?”

That’s very true @Ron Nasty. Last season was fantastic though and one of the best I can remember apart from all the injuries and the “Antonio right back” experiment. What do you think our chances are of pushing on this season? I think Feghouli is going to be a surprise package.

I think the biggest test this season, @Leppo, is making the new stadium be more than the home stadium in name. I think it could prove an awkward season just because of that. At the moment, I’ll be happy if we end this season our usual mid-table.

Shame we lost to the blue meanies; but all credit to them – they played very well for the whole match while we only turned up in the second half.
Saw enough then to encourage me; early days yet.
We will probably disagree but I also think we had a certain penalty not given – and it should have been a red card – would have changed the match completely.

I agree Bravo looks like a liability. I disagreed with Mourinho and the alleged handball though.

Anyone else excited for next season? Should be fascinating given how many signings there have been so far.
I’m really struggling to predict how the table will finish up.
I’m one of the few football fans who doesn’t actually support a team, although most of my family support either Nottingham Forest or Notts County since they are my local teams.

I’m a Liverpool FC fan,as are most of my family (the rest support Everton). I love Klopp, and am optimistic we can still achieve something this year (which will most likely be a Champions League place at the end of the season).
I really wish he’d sort out our defence though, they’re so bad at times, and he needs a new GK,as Mignolet and Karius are both useless.
I’m so happy I’ve found this thread

No chance of winning the PL, and next to none with the CL because of a very dodgy defence, despite spending £76m or whatever it was on VVD, and two keepers who shouldn’t be anywhere near Anfield; why Klopp has continually failed to address the issue by signing a competent replacement is bemusing. Selling Coutinho will also have a negative effect on results and performances for the rest of the season. Robertson has been fantastic, however, and being a Scot it’s a delight to see; his pressing of the entire Man City defence and goalkeeper when 4-1 up will be one of my favourite moments of the season.
Should get a CL place due to Chelsea falling apart and Arsenal being an even worse version of how they normally are. If you don’t get at least 4th the season should go down as a massive disappointment.

I agree with you @mean-mister-mustard. We won’t win the Prem (let’s be honest,Man City have as good as won it already), and your comments on Klopp are spot on. I’ve been calling for us to sign a decent keeper for years, and the fact that Klopp and Brendan Rodgers before him haven’t addressed the issue is worrying, baffling etc etc.
Van Dijk will prove to be a good signing, but the likes of Klavan,Lovren, and Matip are not of the required standard,i think that’s been shown to be the case. Selling Coutinho was a massive own goal in my opinion, and to not replace him was madness. I guess we will see whether that comes back to haunt us in the long run.
Which team do you support @meanmistermustard?

Coutinho wanted to leave and the money Barca were willing to pay made it almost impossible to turn down. I think Klopp didn’t see the long-term benefit of either buying a relatively cheap short-term replacement or spending a fortune on someone he actually thinks would make a positive impact. With a good chance of getting fourth, it’s a worthwhile gamble.
I have a soft spot for Man U, my father really liked them and they were great to watch under Ferguson but since they left they are often dire, and I have a lot of family from Brighton so follow them. Aberdeen are my Scottish team and I would happily see Rangers and Celtic leave Scottish football forever.

@meanmistermustard: Yes we got a great price for a player who wanted to leave. I guess my main disappointment re Coutinho was that we couldn’t keep him until the end of the season. He can’t play for Barcelona in the Champions League this year as he’s cup tied, and if Barcelona win something this year, it’s not like Coutinho would feel a massive part of what they achieved,so I guess the timing was just strange.
Man United are not pretty to watch, but Mourinho knows how to win things,so I guess United’s hierarchy sacrificed the ‘United way’ of playing,in the hope of getting silverware.
As for Scottish footy, I agree with you. Rangers and Celtic leaving the SPL would make the league more of a level playing field

Barca spent most of the close season trying to sign Coutinho but it never happened as Liverpool didn’t allow it, all that changed is that Coutinho made it clear he wanted out so Liverpool rightly took an insane amount of money when the next window opened.
The good to watch v successful can be a very heated argument; lot of Man U fans would happily see the back of Mourinho in exchange for more attacking football yet others want the titles and to be competing which he brings.
In Scotland, whilst Celtic are miles ahead, Rangers are a mess. They have a much bigger budget than Aberdeen and have far more potential finance-wise but there are large questions of said finances with soft loans all over the place to help them continue to operate (large losses being posted). They are not any further ahead of Aberdeen therefore, hence how close they currently are in the league.

@meanmistermustard: Yeah,it would seem that Coutinho really pushed for it. From what I’ve heard, the owners were going to reject any other offers for him,but Klopp made the decision to sanction the sale. I’ve read reports that Luis Suarez may be surplus to requirements there, and that if Barca were willing to sell, he’d like to come back here. That would be amazing if that happened.
Yeah, I can see both sides to the Mourinho argument. While he has them competing at the top, fans will put up with the style of play. If he’s not winning though, fans will turn, and he has a history of not sticking around at a club for more than 3 years, and losing the dressing room. I’d like to see how he does at a club that doesn’t have a lot of money, and see how good he really is. I can’t see him doing a Rafa Benitez though, and going to a club like Newcastle. Whether he sticks around at United or not, deep down, the fans know that they’ll attract top drawer replacements, after the David Moyes debacle

Big game tomorrow, and for the first time in many a year,i’m actually looking forward to it. Liverpool are in good form right now,and i’m confident we can get a win tomorrow (please…….). Mourinho normally finds a way of getting a result in these games,so it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how events unfold. I personally think our front 3, particularly Salah, will cause United some problems.
Anyone else going to be watching the big game? (Man United Vs Liverpool for those who don’t know )

Hopefully, Liverpool thrashes them but no doubt Mourinho will set out Man U to bore for 90 minutes and settle for a draw. I wasted two hours watching their last match, if today’s is decent I’ll catch the highlights.
Instead, I’m off to watch Partick Thistle v Aberdeen in the pouring rain.

So,a 2-1 defeat. Liverpool didn’t really do enough in an attacking sense, and both United goals were down to our mistakes. All that being said, the ref was appalling. Rashford jumps into the crowd,a bookable offence,no yellow card given. He also got away with a few other dodgy challenges. Valencia kicks one of our players in the chest,a red card offence,no action taken by the referee = a disgrace. No complaints with the result, United took their chances,we didn’t,but it would have been nice if we had a ref who was actually impartial. The guy may as well have been wearing a United shirt

We’ll have to differ over the referee 😉
And hey, a cup final. I wonder which United will turn up??
