Ugh! I never thought I’d ever show my face round here (oh the shame), but I just need someone to tell me, in no uncertain terms, what the joke behind this gif is.

PaulMic.gifImage Enlarger

I sorta get that it’s something Fifty-Shades-ish, but I sorta don’t get it, and it’s driving me batty.

So if someone *nudges @Ahhh Girl* can explain…

Okeydokey, now I’m outta here.

I was going to put this in the Miscellaneous Question about The Beatles thread, then thought this thread would be better.

Are there stories of who went out and bought the massive amount of condoms The Beatles would have needed from say 1961-1966?

I can picture Neil or Mal going to every store in each town buying up every condom in sight.

Ok. That’s a question I never thought of asking.

You should send it to Paul’s monthly Q&A, would be more interesting than “what colour is your favourite t-shirt?”.

As for the answer I have no idea. Mal was usually the one who got them whatever they needed so presumably he had a suitcase full of them. Maybe they didn’t them.

joe, maybe you could write a book on this important condom topic?

Questions that could be answered in the book:

Which Beatle use the most? How often did they each use one? Which brand/kind did each one of the prefer? Who bought them for The Beatles? What happened when there wasn’t one to be found when it was needed.

This sucks (pun intended). The @ didn’t work again. @Joe – let’s see if this one works.

EDIT: ok this one seems to have worked. What is going sideways on me with the @s? Since this one worked — Joe see the post above this one.

O.o

I can’t directly answer this because I feel if I knew the answer that I would be boarding onto the “creepy psycho” side of being a Beatles fan and I would need to go on a detox for a couple of months/years

but

Seeing as they all caught gonorrhoea in Hamburg- I don’t think safe sex was their main priority.  a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Peter Brown also wrote of having to get..ahm…treatment for crabs for a certain Beatle coughPaulcough before his girlfriend came home. That and they all used to get penicillin injections together- which is used for treatment of chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

Right that’s enough talk about The Beatles’ sex lives, can we get back to making this thread all about filthy in-your-end-ohs, (a-hard-days-night-george-10) again, please?

That is assuming they used condoms. Myself, I think condoms were probably rarely used.

Maybe they were only used when tacked to a wall and set on fire.

How odd, I was just thinking about that passage in Peter Brown’s book about the tours and selected fans being ‘screwed blued and tattoed”, a phrase I find intriguing. And given that Brown describes them as being filled with uppers and ballasted with gallons of scotch and coke, I don’t think they got much further in their sexual health than playing with condoms as @Zig alludes.

They were very naughty boys and that’s probably unavoidable with genius a-hard-days-night-paul-7

I don’t have it with me right now, but I think the 1969 issue of History of Rock magazine has an interview with Lennon where he talks about children and miscarriages and Yoko. IIRC he says something about how they’d like more children at some point, but it wasn’t a priority, Yoko wasn’t on the pill and he didn’t like using condoms. I’ll try to dig out the quote.

I know he and Cynthia never used contraception either. I think it’s a fairly safe assumption that Lennon wasn’t all that careful with the groupies either.

Was their any other contraceptives that women used other than the pill during that time?

There were various different methods available before the pill, the most functional being diaphragms, caps, or even the female condom (which was invented in the early 1900s). Some of them were rather weird. Should you be interested you can read more here about the history of contraception.
