I recently discovered a show that I never knew was so popular, “Chuck”. It ran for five years (2007-2012), and I’ve seen the first three seasons so far. Only with season 4 (seen the first two shows so far) am I finding it a bit tiresome and repetitive. But overall, it’s been quite a sparkling romantic comedy, attached to a spy thriller format. A tad juvenile at times, but I don’t take myself so seriously that I can’t “lower” myself to dig it.

I watched Chuck a bit while it was on the air, mostly because of Adam Baldwin (I’m a huge Firefly fan). Need to watch the later seasons, although others have warned me that it starts to drag after a few seasons.
Other musings…
I need to catch up on the last season of Doctor Who, but I’ve been a fan of that since it was shown on public television here in the States back when I was a kid. The reimagined series is absolutely brilliant.
Speaking of British television, my s/o turned me on to a bunch of old Channel 4 sitcoms like Spaced, Black Books, and (possibly my favorite) The IT Crowd. I watch those on Netflix when I can. Spaced I have on DVD, but I’ve seen it so many times I feel like I only need to watch it occasionally. It’s kind of the way I feel about Star Wars in that respect, funny enough.

Speaking of British television, my s/o turned me on to a bunch of old Channel 4 sitcoms like Spaced, Black Books, and (possibly my favorite) The IT Crowd. I watch those on Netflix when I can. Spaced I have on DVD, but I’ve seen it so many times I feel like I only need to watch it occasionally. It’s kind of the way I feel about Star Wars in that respect, funny enough.
I don’t have Netflix, but I’ve been catching a bunch of British comedies on Hulu. I just finished all the episodes of School of Comedy over the weekend.

Offline I love Sherlock. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth checking out. As said before, each episode is really like a movie, they’re 90 minutes long. I just watched the finale of Season 2 (Season 3 just finished airing) the other night and it was brilliant.
On a different note, did anyone see the last episode of SNL? It was Seth Meyers’ last episode, the first half and Weekend Update were hilarious, second half wasn’t as good, but still a great episode overall. And Imagine Dragons (who I really recommend, they’re my favorite current artist other than Paul) gave two great performances was well.

SNL has been slightly better over the last few weeks. Meyers was that show’s heart and soul (head writer, go-to guy to fix a sketch, responsible for a lot of Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin material) and the current cast is well aware of that, so it’ll be interesting to see who steps up with Meyers’ departure. Ironically, had Bill Hader stuck it out, he’d be the natural “next in line,” but since he’s gone… maybe Killam? Vanessa Bayer? (Bayer oddly would be a better fit for Weekend Update I think than Cecily Strong, since Strong’s a good sketch performer and Bayer struggles there.) Beck Bennett needs more time, but he seems cut from the Meyers/Fey mold of being a good writer as well as performer.

Offline They’ve already named a new Update host. I think in terms of heart and soul it falls to Killam, though Kenan Thompson’s been there forever and is the funniest person on the show (though Killam’s close), so he could take over.
On your Beck Bennett point, I think he’s the only funny one out of this year’s class of featured performers. Guess they had to hit a bad year of new guys, after last year and 2010, which had Bryant, Strong, Killam, Pharaoh, Bayer, and McKinnon.

Offline I just watched the 3 seasons of ‘Louie’, starring comedian Louis CK.
It’s the only time I’ve ever seen a truly accurate depiction of a divorced single Father in his 40s (of which I count myself) and the natural prejudices society has against you for marrying the wrong person.
Some people say the show’s depressing. It probably is, I wouldn’t even know anymore.

Yep, Colin Jost. Never heard of the guy, but we’ll see how that works out. Bennett’s got a great future on the show, and I think once she gets used to the environment, Sasheer Zamata will be fine. The others, yeah I don’t forsee lasting long, other than Milhiser. I think Kenan’s sort of in that Tim Meadows/Darrell Hammond mode in that it’s never really been “his” show to lead even though he’s been there for a long time. Killam seems to be the obvious leader now. If you watch enough, you can kind of tell who the leaders of the cast are: Chevy (first year), Ackroyd (after Chevy left), Murphy, Hartman (was for the Carvey/Sandler/Rock cast what Meyers was to this current cast), Ferrell, Fey/Poehler/Rudolph (they all sort of led together), then Meyers. And somewhere in there, you’d have to throw in Al Franken, as he was there for a long time and had a lot of influence on sketches and was like Meyers in that he was a go-to for a joke or a sketch change.

Exactly. I say replace Strong with Bayer at Weekend Update. Sure, Strong’s done well at WU, but she’s a much stronger sketch actor than Bayer is.

I can understand why she was chosen though. That character she created indicated she had the properly savvy/ironic sensibility an Update anchor requires, and I don’t know if any other cast member (other than Killam, who stated he didn’t want the role) has it.

He wasn’t the flagship, as there’ve been recurring Weekend Update characters as far back as the 70s (e.g. Gilda Radner’s characters) but I get what you’re saying. I was glad to see Stefon back for Seth’s last day.

Actually, I never was a fan of Stefon. Largely because Hader couldn’t keep a straight face, and it ruined it for me. (Never cared for Fallon for the same reason, either.) Although at least Hader kept the giggles strictly for Stefon, whereas Fallon did it all the time. I like the odd “can’t keep a straight face” moment now and again, just not all the time.

Well, I think the reason Hader couldn’t stop laughing was likely because it was SO FUNNY!!!!!
I found a show a year ago on fuse called Billy on the Street. It’s from Funny or Die, and the host, Billy Eichner, is hilarious. The whole things pretty hilarious. He runs around New York City asking people stupid questions. The new season starts next month.

Offline Inspector George Gently starts again tonight. I haven’t read the books, but I watched the last two series and quite liked it. Plus, I have a bit of a thing for Lee Ingleby (who’s in it). I haven’t watched any really decent telly in a while so this’ll be a nice change.
