Personally, my favorite non-Beatles music is classical music. Other than that, I'll listen to almost anything. (Besides country, rap, and hip-hop.)

What kind of music do you guys like?

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

I would recommend any Beatle fan to check out Nada Surf…

They use a Beatle beat often and the drummer is on record saying that Ringo is the very best drummer that he's ever heard…

Here are a few songs they have of Beatle quality (in my opinion).

No Authority…

Bacardi…

What's Your Secret

I'll see if I can dig up some links.

Actually, it's called Whose Authority…

Not the best quality video here, but you can hear the song and see what they're like.

Everytime I think I’ve categorized myself I end up changing tastes. First I really thought jazz was for me, but then it started to bore me a bit and I needed to add some groove to my music. I was led to funk which got me into my second coming of the Beatles with the incredible, unbelievable funk gods the Meters. So I got deeper and deeper into funk, but I decided I needed more depth and I got into all sorts of stuff but have just recently discovered Frank Zappa and some of his instrumentals which I absolutely am in love with at the moment.
When I was a bit younger and getting into Los Beatles I was mainly into classic rock (Zeppelin, Who, Hendrix) but it just wasn’t for me.
Anyway I would say that instrumentals of most sorts (including some classical but I’m still looking for someone that really interests me) and acoustic guitars and harmonies (S&G, CSN(Y)) are my two favorites.

I'm surprised you're on a Beatle board.

Let’s see, I’m a fan of most 60’s and 70’s band (CSNY, Who, Stones etc.), as well as the crooners (Sinatra, Martin), and some 50’s rock (Berry, Everleys). In terms if music now, give people like Beiber to the wolves and give me some god damn Alternative s**t!!!

There are four distinct categories of music I like:

  • The first is Classic rock from the 60's and 70's like The Beatles, Bowie, The Clash, The Stones, Dylan, The Velvet Underground and the Beach Boys .
  • The second is Post-Punk and New Wave music from the late 70's and 80's like Joy Division, New Order, Talking Heads, Television, The Smiths, Public Image Ltd, and XTC.
  • The third is Alternative and Indie rock from the 90's and 21st Century like Radiohead, Cornershop, Manic Street Preachers, Blur, The Verve, Spiritualized, Gorillaz, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana, The White Stripes and the Flaming Lips.
  • The fourth is Soul and Rhythm and Blues from the 60's and 70's like Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Al Green and the Delfonics.

You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Titch and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone down in number two.

Great post JFK, I really enjoy reading your opinion. But that’s your opinion and although I highly doubt you’ve heard most or probably any of some of my favorite artists material, I’ll let it go because it’s my taste in music and I’m not trying to please or impress anyone else. Thus this is why we all have personal tastes.

Another band I forgot to mention has to be Simon and Garfunkel. Yes, Gniknus, I was wrong, you were right. Bridge Over Trouble Water has to be in the top 10 songs of all time.

I’m glad you enjoy them, and thanks to you and Zig I’ve rediscovered CSNY and I absolutely love that band.
Any fans of Ratatat here? Someone might enjoy this pile of manure…feature=related

There are not many rules in this board, but one of them is respect.  So please avoid comments like that in the future.

Thanks Gnik, that sounds great. I interrupted I Found Out for that, and it was worth it. Really, my parents had always been Neil Young fans, so I was actually getting into them for the first time. Now, are they better or worse with Young?

If you are kidding (I hope), nice one. If you’re serious, that’s just….. pathetic. Completely pathetic. Sorry, but difference of opinion and mean vindictive statements are different things.

Well I don't really know about genres, but my favorite artists sans The Beatles would be called Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys , Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, Taylor Swift, Nirvana, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel and The Who. I'll listen to anything except screamo and hardcore punk, though really.

I like to think I have a wide range of music, but I’m always put to shame by Zig, Von and Mith. That being said, Doctor Robert reminded me of the Motwn artists I love. I really have to say that I love most everything that has something of a twist that isn’t Autotune. I like to listen to things often, so even if I’m on a massive John kick, George still gets listened to. I have to say that the person I’d listen to most without the Beatles would be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I love most music, but soul and RnB and Motown is high on my list. Gniknus, if you want a harmonies and acoustic sound, check out Jackson Browne. He has some great work, but the one you should start with is The Pretender.

Edit: MMM, have you heard Dvorak’s New World Symphony? My cousin (who is like your god damn freaking clone) says it is great. What’s your opinion?

Perhaps this would be a good time to bring up a post by StarWisher about last.fm because it would be cool to keep up with what we are all listening to.

Well I like a lot of different types of music but lately I've kind of been leaning toward reggae music. But this is really only just very recently so I'm going to start out with the classics like Bob Marley especially since I don't know too much about the genre. But I hope to learn a lot this summer. I also of course like a lot of classic rock (so I'm loving this Memorial day weekend on Palladia where it's all classic rock movies and such), crooners and big band too, musical music (I have no other word to call it really), jazz, classical (comes with being a classically trained violinist), and indie as well. So I like a lot of stuff except really country and rap.
