I will make clear, should any changes be made by those currently running this poll, unless agreed to by the majority of Forumpudlians, such as this bleating about combining History and News, thus disrespecting the fact that this is a Beatles forum, I will run an alternative poll next year using the categories that 99% of us agree are things that shouldn’t be touched.
This poll is not about what @Starr Shine? wants it to be, or @Little Piggy Dragonguy (who I actually think is paying more attention to what Forumpudlians want than SS? seems to be showing), but what Forumpudlians think matters when it comes to assessing contributions to the forum over the course of a year, and what contributions we value.
Should those running decide to remake as they would like it, rather than giving the forum the poll they like, I’ll run an alternate poll and we can find out if people like the categories we have or would prefer a dumbed down version that pays less attention to our being a Beatles forum and just the “funner” names for categories and people not winning constantly being their only concern.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
It ain’t broke.

A lot of the categories aren’t even voted in. Plus there is a trend of people voting incorrectly. Like in funniest posts, I saw votes for users in those.
People are consistently skipping certain categories which is not very good for a poll.
That’s pretty broken there.
As for newbie, I think there should be something rewarding for newer members. I’ve seen rising star awards work in other places so I don’t think it would be the worst thing to have something for new users.

People are allowed to skip categories @Starr Shine?, and maybe those categories that are skipped should be looked at to make them easier to vote (they are often the post awards, and it might be an idea to come up with a shortlist on those for people to choose from), however you seem to keep coming back to merging History and News which has, repeatedly, been rejected by the majority because they’re recognised as two different things, and both being equally important to our credibility as a Beatles forum.

I think with the declining overall user retention, the categories become more muddled. Back when there were more active users, Beatles news and history were the more distinct cause of how people used the forum.
News and history over time are becoming less distinct in terms of scope. Beatles present and Beatles past. Beatlology would cover both.
Like a Beatles fanfiction award would be Beatles related but the current userbase couldn’t support that since people don’t really post fanfiction.
As trends change among the userbase, the votes should reflect how the forum is being used now rather than how it was being used years ago.
and there is a shortlist for creative posts/ funny posts, it is a thread in ATN

Those threads are a longlist, @Starr Shine?, my suggestion is for a shortlist – four or five posts that have had, say, the most likes, and been nominated via the threads, to be put forward as the posts to choose between. The problem with the post awards is that there are so many posts, and it might help to make them more focused and hone them down to selected posts.

You may feel that “it ain’t broke”, but three people commented in this thread saying they thought changes could be made, and other members have told me privately. I know you do not agree with merging those two threads, but it got brought up again. As not many people chimed in last time, I wanted to open a discussion about that and see if more people feel that way. I am not considering making any changes to the poll that only have support from one or two members, so you don’t have to worry about that.
I also fear that you immediately making threats of having two polls next year if you don’t like what’s decided on will make people hesitant to share their opinions on any of this. I want people to feel comfortable responding and sharing their opinions without feeling like they will be attacked for it.

Maybe we can change the thread where both a screenshot and link to the nominated post is in the post so people don’t have to go click on a thousand links. Then we could also not respond to them in that thread to make it easier to look through. I also like the using the thanks to vote in that thread and we can narrow them down that way at the end of the year.

You claim that you want to pay attention to what Forumpudlians think matter, and so far several Forumpudlians have expressed the opinion that some changes should be made to the end-of-year poll. Obviously we should try to reach a greater consensus before making any major decisions, but so far you seem to be the only one expressing the opinion that the poll is perfect the way it is? Unless I’m mistaken?
Food for thought.

I also commented that I had no problem with changes to the poll that were agreed to by the majority of Forumpudlians, @50yearslate, my post you quote was merely saying that if changes were made that are not agreed to, I will offer the chance to vote on a poll that hasn’t been changed. Surely you are not supporting changes being made to the poll that people do not agree to?

I think you should have a committee of five/six users (nominated by other users, elections every year etc) who can decide the categories, perhaps even decide the nominees in those categories.
It’d be interesting to have a breakdown of how many people voted in each category, then you’d probably have a better understanding about what needs to be reviewed.

There cannot be two awards going on at the same time, it would bring chaos as who would know what one to favour; everyone on the forum should be looking for consensus, not pulling things apart for whatever reason. I think the panel idea is a good one, three or four people agree on the award categories and then throw it open for feedback. And if you don’t like the final outcome don’t vote. It’s quite simple.
The whole thing is meant to be fun, not taken so seriously.
This isn’t what the mods on a whole think, it’s my own opinion.

I don’t think a panel is a good idea, it is just going to end up being the same old users every year. Should just be one person running and they can pick if they want someone else to do it.
Also Beatleology I think would be good to combine history/news.
And changing the funniest post to a limited amount of options wouldn’t be great. Unless it is a pre-vote to nominate options

The problem with one person is that it risks becoming their awards and what they want is how it is, with everyone getting a say it can become a free for all.
I will add that I haven’t voted for two years as I have no idea who posts what and when. In the end I will happily go with whatever is agreed and fully back it. Whoever takes it on deserves a lot of praise and appreciation for doing it as it is a lot of work, not hassle for what the content is.

I like TJ’s idea of a panel. It wouldn’t end up being the same old people if we picked it per year, and it would help iron out any kinks. Would also be a good backup in case someone fell under a bus and couldn’t release the results, as there’d be multiple people able to do it.
Also Beatleology I think would be good to combine history/news.
You’ve said this before, and I’ll say this again: I disagree.

Also, I think having a committee would make the results even more distant from the general forum user base rather than just one user. Having multiple people all with access to the ratings wouldn’t be very anonymous.
