Isn’t there a group/panel consensus, even if just a few people, so that the categories can be discussed and altered as desired? No idea how it currently is but certainly the mods discuss everything and more often than not will come to a group decision, tho Joe has the overriding call. Surely a few folk would be willing to volunteer and LPD has the final say, since she seems to be running this.
It’s also the 10th anniversary of the awards; is there any special award or celebration being held to mark it?

Honestly, good luck to whoever wants to take part, but all of what I’ve read over the past few pages is why I’ll never get involved in any Forum Awards. They always end up with somebody being upset/annoyed because they’ve been ignored, people often vote for their friends and the same users end up winning the same award every year. I mean, is *Insertusername* the ‘most avid John fan’ because they have all his work, or because they post ‘I love John’ frequently in the John sub-forums?

I’d quite like an anniversary box containing a luxury book (collecting all the best posts, the history of the awards, profiles of some of the most prolific winners of the award, and a complete list of all awards and their winners), a limited edition themed wireless keyboard (not attached to a device so folk can connect it to their device), some themed confetti with the award design printed on it, a mini award and a notepad and pen so folk can write down their nominees for future awards. Sell for $150 each, limited run of course as then you can bump the price up to a stupid amount and get away with it.
If that’s just too much hard work and cost, just hunt around your house for any crap you have lying around, divide it all up into a few old shoe boxes with ‘End Of Year Awards – The 10th Anniversary Compendium (Limited Edition)’ scrawled on the front and flog them online. Seems to be where Paul is going.

Those are some really good ideas. I’ll see what I can do.

Surely you cannot vote for yourself no matter what you post as otherwise the voting is immediately open to self-promotion.
I agree, I’m surprised there isn’t a rule saying you can’t do that!

Alright, I just think that should have been made more clear in the first place. While I don’t personally oppose the idea of “Most Inspiring Post” as a category, in a similar vein to what RN has said, what I do oppose is making changes to the awards without prior discussion or even mentioning that a change has been made at all. I think it only makes sense that we should be kept informed on what exactly we are voting for and why, and that we should be able to provide feedback on any potential changes before they are made.
I agree, these sorts of decisions should be made as a forum. While it seems that generally people aren’t opposed to it, I don’t see why that should have been included over, say, my suggestion of Most Musical User, or even Best User Named Timothy – suggestions that while no one responded, at least they were suggested where others could agree or disagree.
Honestly I thought those were flippant suggestions and you guys were just naming things you thought you would win. This is also why I didn’t include “best user to join x date”. Sorry I didn’t realize those were serious responses.
We have a large number of musical people on this forum – I do not even consider myself in the top 3 most likely to win that award, but that’s irrelevant – I thought that because we’re on a forum about music, with lots of musical folk, that it would be a nice addition. If other disagree, fine, no harm done in suggesting it.

I don’t think that thread should exist at all. People should choose what they think the funniest/most creative posts are on their own, not because somebody else posted it in an easily accessible second thread. I keep lists or mental notes then at the end of the year I decide. That way nobody gets influenced by me and I don’t get influenced by other people.
Disagree, I for one am never going to remember a specific post from February, and that thread really helps me – and posts I don’t find funny at the time that are nominated by others often end up with my vote, because over time I may have found it funnier, or I’ve finally got the joke after a third reading. Also, it’s a nice thread to look back on at the end of the year.
Sounds to me like you don’t think they’re funny the first time because they weren’t reposted in a thread telling you they’re funny yet.
No, I often need to re-read jokes to get them, and I’m glad I get the opportunity to.

It’s not necessarily the case of having a thread to track “inspiring” posts, if that helps remind some people then no harm, no foul, just that nobody has been noting what they think is the most inspiring post of the year. I got no idea what I’ll go for, and will probably just go for one of my posts about Captain Sir Thomas Moore, one of the biggest inspirations in this dark year.
This is my biggest problem. I always vote in every category, but I have literally no idea what I’m going to put for that, mostly because I haven’t been tracking it – and I have no desire to trawl through 50 pages of the In My Life thread where I will no doubt find the post for my vote.
You don’t have to vote in every category.
I always have, as it makes the awards more complete. I don’t want to break that streak of completeness, but I just might have to – and it feels like many people will do the same.

No, there isn’t, not as far as I know. I think RN suggested this a few years ago iirc, especially for the Mr Sun King Coming Together award, but nothing came of it that I know.
It is a very good idea and one that should be implemented imo

Considering it’s now into December and voting is open, it’s probably better to let it run as it is at the minute and work out any changes to the Awards for next year. To start making alterations to the set-up at such a late date may bring about confusion to those participating.
Also, none of this should be a reflection upon LPD or anything she has done to take it on. Must be some amount of work and time involved to run it, especially considering those who started it have long since left. A large amount of credit and appreciation should be given and shown to her.

There was no talk of changes being made to the poll in November, @Starr Shine?. Had it been suggested that there would be changes before they were made, then the issues would have been made clear earlier. There’s no point saying people weren’t bringing up issues in November, before there were changes, and only brought up their complaints in December, when we could see changes had been made we were not consulted on.
I waited to make my complaint about the poll until LPD posted it because I had no idea the change I objected to was even being thought of until the poll appeared. There would have been more talk in November had we been informed.

The current discussions only started a week or so ago and are ongoing and I’ve posted saying I feel the awards should be left alone this year and any changes made should be done for next years. Such things happen in most Awards ceremonies where people naturally discuss the categories as soon as they are made known, it’s hard to discuss them beforehand.

I think LPD is doing a good job, and I don’t understand why everyone is all offended. From what I can tell, the categories are basically identical. It’s not this big of a deal 🙂
