Rocket Man himself, Elton John. Feel free to discuss about him

Elton John has always been an important part of my musical interests as he was the first artist i ever got into (When i was age 7 no less). My favorite songs include Jamacian Jerk-off, Both versions of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, Grey Seal, I’m Still Standing, and I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues.

. . .And Yes, i’m catching the farewell tour no less

I love Elton John, he’s awesome. But (except for I’m Still Standing) I think his career after Captain Fantastic went downhill and I don listen/like it very often.
My fave songs are definitely Levon, Take Me To The Pilot, Where To Now St. Peter, Rocket Man, Saturday Night’s Alright, Bitter Fingers, Elderberry Wine, High Flying Bird, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

I grew up on Elton John. Most of what i am as a piano player is sculpted by his and Billy Joel’s songs. I was learning to sing and play their songs in middle school, an escape that was extremely important to me. Recently i’ve been on a huge kick of Elton John, learning and relearning a bunch of songs off of Goodby Yellow Brick Road and Madman Across the Water.

I love his spontaneous clunky playing style, heard all throughout Honkey Chateu and Don’t Shoot Me. Elton John is extremely important to me as a musician.

My dad bought the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album after my mum died, probably because of Candle In The Wind, and it was really the only album I connected to, despite a few collections of Greatest Hits on cassette that I would wear out. It’s a brilliantly made album but from this position in time I wonder what was going on with Taupin to write so many odd misogynistic lyrics, I’ve since listened to quite a few John albums and it all seems quite concentrated there. John in his day was a brilliant singles writer, some of his albums took a lot of listens to like. I think Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player is a bit unsung compared to Road its got a few more hits. Singles like Daniel and Rocket Man will probably go on forever, but mega hits like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me now sound like sagas that you only listen to occasionally. But as a child of the ’70s you could never avoid Elt, and I always have the memory of seeing him with original band as on Road and getting the full Funeral For A Friend treatment in the early 1980s before his great period ended.

My favourite album-only track still has to be Social Disease, but I’ve Seen That Movie too is incredibly underrated. Ah Empty Garden, one of his best moments as was Paul Simon’s with The Late Great Johnny Ace.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Some of my favorite Taupin lyrics are (also just generally great songs

Levon

This Song Has No Title

Mona Lisas and Madhatters

Someone Saved My Life Tonight (Written about John Lennon )

Country Comfort

Razor Face.

Another thing that makes Elton so amazing is his innovation and prowess in the studio. Clever folk arrangements run all through the 70s, going back to back with tracks like Madman Across The Water, with crazy string arrangements and Backwards acoustic guitar harmonics.

Its crazy. Up there with Brian Wilson or Michael Jackson and even Paul in terms of ability to produce a hit.

I also love his backup of Whatever Gets You Through The Night.

"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

No it isn’t. Here’s the story behind the lyrics from Wikipedia;

Taupin’s lyric refers to a time in 1968, before John was popular as a musician, when John was engaged to be married to girlfriend Linda Woodrow. John and Woodrow were sharing a flat with Taupin in Furlong Road in Highbury, London, hence the opening line “When I think of those East End lights.” While having serious doubts about the looming marriage, John contemplated suicide. He took refuge in his friends, especially Long John Baldry, who convinced John to abandon his plans to marry in order to salvage and maintain his musical career. After “sticking his head in the gas oven, but with the windows open”, his parents arrived the next day, in a van, to take him back to their apartment in Pinner.”

To match the theme of the album (Elton and Bernie beginning their music career/lives) it being about John Lennon wouldn’t make any sense at all.

No I’m thinking of Someone Saved My Life tonight. I actually argued Evangeline’s point to my parents at the dinner table one time, who then convinved me that it was about John.
