I obviously don’t know what is going through Satan’s head so I’m not going to try and interpret anything, but I think that when trying to understand someone’s opinion, it’s hard not to let personal opinions on the subject get in the way of stating your point. I’m not calling anyone out, I do it too, and it’s hard to be patient when you disagree with someone. I just wish I could bake a cake of rainbows and smiles and we could all eat it and be happy. (is that weird?)

I’m of the same mind for the cake of rainbows and smiles…
I don’t get how anyone can be upset at anyone else for a little musical passion. Sure, that passion carries a few contradictions here and there, but that’s what makes all of this so great.
Our Mr. Sun King is passionate in his way, and I’m passionate in my way. It’s all cool. We’re all here for a united love of the Beatles, and everyone interprets it in their own way. Sometimes we disagree. Such is life.

Does popularity matter in the short term? Probably not.
In the long term, however, is a different matter altogether. If something is popular for many years…well, there’s a good chance it’s popular for a reason. Usually because people like it. That matters, I think.

That’s actually quite profound in its simplicity.

What a true statement! Well said, kedame.

Popularity and longevity do matter. However, they are indicators of quality rather than causers of quality. Something being liked by a lot of people doesn’t suddenly make it better, but it probably is good if lots of people can recognise that it is good.

Very simple: Does popularity (and, by the same token, longevity) matter? Does it make a song better or worse if it is popular?(I know my answer, but it’ll be long; I wait until later.)
I’m not sure there is always a “same token”. That is because to me (just my opinion gang – I’m not preaching this as gospel) populartiy and longevity don’t always go hand in hand.
Sure, popularity translated into longevity (I have to assume you mean an artisit’s staying power) for Elvis and the Beatles. One might even argue that those 2 acts are even more popular now than when they were in their prime. I only say that because they each have more fans now than they ever have due to more generations hopping on the band wagon (no pun there). That is not always the case. I found this list of the 100 Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Artists of The 1960s on the web. It is by no means listed here by me to be a difinitive list. I only posted it so we can get an idea of who was popular back then. There are some obvious names on the list that definitely meet the criteria of popularity and longevity. Others, not so much. So, popularity gets you noticed and sells records, but doesn’t always matter.
To answer your second question; whether a song is “better” or “worse” is very subjective. I might like a song that you hate, regardless of how popular it is.
I guess you could say a song could be popular because it is good, but I don’t always agree that a song is good just because it is popular.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Exactly. Popularity does NOT equal greatness…although they can certainly coincide.
As for satanhimself’s remarks about the contradictions between alternately wishing and not-wishing popularity upon your own personal favourites – I can empathize with both viewpoints, although any personal reasons I have for wishing unpopularity upon performers I like are mostly a reflection of my own neuroses.

I’d say that describes the nature of a lot of passionate music fans.
I think you’re definitely reading into it the wrong way, and perhaps taking it a little too personally and seriously.
I apologize for my lack of a speedy response. However, I think you are missing my point. I think it’s horrible to wish unpopularity on a band you love. If you don’t agree, then we have nothing more to say.

Are you alright, Mr Sun King ? In several recent discussions you have been uncharacteristically belligerent over small matters (which may warrant discussion or even debate, but not to such a heated extent).

Back on topic, I said upthread that I can think of some neurotic reasons for wanting a band you like to remain unpopular:
One reason: You feel priveleged to have discovered them and want them all to yourself!
Another: You’re egotistical about your superior musical tastes and feel that the masses couldn’t appreciate the band on as many levels as you, therefore they don’t deserve to be fans.
Also: A band that sells far fewer records tends to render those records more valuable by relative scarcity alone.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
