Will be interesting to see how Capaldi plays the doctor. He’s the oldest actor who’s played him for some time, and he is very experienced. I’ll watch the first episode, at least. I was surprised they chose him as he appeared in an episode set in Pompeii when D.Tennant was the doctor. I wonder if they’ll somehow connect the two characters, or if we’re supposed to pretend that we haven’t ever seen him before.

Peter Capaldi off The Thick Of It is supposedly favourite for, but I don’t think it’ll be him- the other ones of the new era haven’t been that famous beforehand. I’m not mad on Matt Smith- David Tennant will always be my Doctor.
Same here. He’s just the best IMO, certainly out of the most recent ones, anyway.

I saw the Doctor Who movie when I was little at my great-grandparent’s house and I liked it, but I’m not really into movies where all the animals talk anymore.
I think I missed this joke the first time you told it.
(In case that isn’t a joke or anyone doesn’t get it, unknown is referring to Doctor Dolittle- IMHO the books and the stage production were far superior to the film)
Capaldi is a good choice IMO, he was excellent in Torchwood: Children of Earth. I do not think he’ll be “connected” to his Pompeii character or his CoE character. They invented excuses for Martha and Gwen, but they didn’t for Karen Gillan, who was also in The Fires Of Pompeii, or for Colin Baker, and they can’t have a brief mention of him being “family” of John Frobisher or the Pompeii guy because the Doctor isn’t human.
I told her I didn’t

Great “fake” Doctor Who trailer: Malcolm Tucker IS Doctor Who. Do not watch if offended by bad language!

I saw that a couple of days ago and thought it was fabulous. Must say im incredibly fed up with the will-they/wont-they love stories strung over the last couple of Doctors and am thrilled we wont get any more Clara and the Doctor nonsense (unless they enter the older man/young woman area which would creep a load of folks out). And that guff about everyone coming together to sing to save a planet and its people – made me want to quit watching it was cringingly awful. Lets get back to a dark, at times angry Doctor the kind we got with Christopher Eccleston and at times David Tennett, no more second chances for the Baddies.
Cant believe parents are complaining over Peter Capaldi getting the role as their kids might google his past work and come across The Thick of It. And I forgot about his role in Torchwood where he was excellent. Looking forward to the regeneration now.

Ooh I didn’t know they’d announced anything new. If DT is in it then I’ll definitely be watching it. Wonder how they’re going to write him back in?

A report can be read here on upcoming Dr Who events. No idea how they will write David and Billie back in, diehard fans are speculating with details I do not understand in the slightest. I’m happy to find out at the time than have it ruined.

Thanks for the link. I did a google search but found nothing. I’m not going to read anything more – just wait and see how it all happens on the night.

I have never been a Doctor Who fan and don’t know a lot about it. Recently, my son Jessie’s improv theatre did a “Tribute to Doctor Who”. John Barrowman happened to be in Edmonton for a Comic Con and heard about the tribute, so quietly sat in the audience and watched their performance He really enjoyed it and came back stage afterward & met the cast (including Jess) & shook their hands. He didn’t want any “attention”, so they did not announce he was in the audience. Jess said he was a really nice guy.

Not that I know much about Doctor Who (ooo… you little liar!) – but Captain Jack in the audience, and a handshake after! So lucky!

I haven’t seen many of the ”classic” Dr Who episodes, so maybe this will be a way to start? I know there are plenty of adults who watch it, and no offence to them, but I feel a bit old to be watching this now. It feels a bit odd because the series that I watched was on tv when I was younger – and it feels like a whole lifetime ago.

Perhaps, as they’re both on DVD soon, and ‘The Web of Fear’ in particular has always had a great reputation amongst the fandom. The other one that was found, The Enemy of the World, was sort of overlooked before the rediscovery, but is now garnering very positive reviews among the fandom since the discovery.
I started the classic series with ‘Genesis of the Daleks’, which is generally regarded as being up there with the greatest Doctor Who stories ever made. It’s six parts long and features Tom Baker as the Doctor, as well as Sarah Jane and the first appearance of Davros. Once you get past the relatively slow pacing and seventies-telly production values, it’s a fantastic story. For a Saturday tea-time series, it also deals with some fairly heavy issues, such as eugenics and chemical warfare. You can also get a box set called “The Beginning”, which features the first three serials broadcast between 1963 and ’64.
