Thanks, I was a little worried about the wall of reverb myself, it’s a bit of a juggling act!

“Empanadas”, the first release with my name on it. Product of me messing around with GarageBand during 2020’s isolation.

I’d been postponing it for a while now but decided that what the heck, it’s ready.

Hey that’s really good Jules. Rhythmically its sophisticated but the grooves don’t loose their flow. The compositions are also extremely interesting. I can hear some of the glam/Velvet influence in there too.

Each track is distinct from the rest but I feel they flow well into each other, so we’ll done on that too. Your very own Abbey Road Medley!
(provided Google Translate is correct, I like the titles too – I obviously don’t know if they bear resemblance to any of the lyrics but 10/10 would recommend)
I very much look forward to the next instalment!

Thank you! Yes it took detail. The “complexity” of the music is what I call the Zappa effect. I’m a sucker for bumpy crazy stuff like that. Having a good rhythm is very important to me and I would spend hours editing the drums.

Of course a big shout out to Abbey Road and Pink Floyd in general for the melting of tracks together.

They don’t actually. If you want some insight:
There’s a concept to the record, although it was a simple inspiration to write a few sentences for each track, because there aren’t many lyrics. Each song represents a person in what used to be my 5-member group of friends, which is now missing a member (who I see regularly but is not talking to the rest), and we all eat patties/empanadas a lot. Of course the titles are pattie flavours, but each first letter of a track is the same as with the letter of their names (C, D [the guy whose dog that is], J for Jules, M & T [the guy that was next to me in the Revolver hoodie]), the lyrics are about them. Same reason why the third track, which would be mine, is instrumental.
Mejillones does mention the title, and the word “empanadas” is in there. And that song is also about marijuana, considering the guy always carries a joint, which in that track is replaced by the word “mejillones/mussels”, and is very tongue-in-cheek.
I very much look forward to the next instalment!
I wonder myself what should I do, if anything. But I’m glad you liked it!!

Cool stuff – I agree with Holey this doesn’t sound like just messing around, it’s something great with a diverse and inventive range of layers! Got prog vibes from the first 20 minutes or so, then out of nowhere it goes into this energetic and avant-garde jazz territory before going out with a funky ending. Very unique!

Ah, that’s even cooler! Hopefully friend no.5 reconciles with the rest of the group…
It must be said… coming from someone who refuses to write a love song and will write about nearly anything else, this is a really cool concept – an album about empanadas and your friends.
I very much look forward to the next instalment!

Bravo @Jules there must be some kind of electric piano renaissance going on or something, I’ve been hearing a lot of neat stuff going on with it. I’m hearing some progressive Todd Rundgren-y or Oldfieldy stuff, some Hancock, maybe a bit of Vulpeck in there (but who isn’t influenced by them lately?) and a lot of other stuff mixed in with your own thing in one fluid package, it’s engrossing and surprising and gosh I wonder where you’ll take us next?! Following you on bandcamp and soundcloud for sure!

Thank you so much @ewe2 I am a lot more basic than you think since I’ve only heard of Hancock from the names you mentioned. My favourite of his material has to be Sleeping Giant. But you seem to be taking me in the right direction because I’m such a lover of the electric piano, and I’ll be checking those artists out.
I think it’s obvious that Miles’ In a Silent Way was the prime inspiration for Dulce de Leche to the point that it might be plagiarism, as well as anything else featuring Joe Zawinul. But isn’t that the greatest form of admiration? Other than that I’m very proud of my album and extremely happy you liked it!

I referenced Rundgren and Oldfield both for the range of instruments they played but also for a style of writing where they merged parts into a song like medleys as a style (Oldfield having come to prominence that way with Tubular Bells). Vulpeck has featured electric piano very heavily in their style of funky pop/jazz/fusion/whatever using the classic Yamaha CP70. Rundgren used electric piano extensively through the 1970’s on songs like “Can We Still Be Friends”, instant 70’s sound! Listen to the album A Wizard, A True Star a wonderfully overblown title but full of aural goodies.

F*ck it. This needs to actually get turned in, so it’s “finished.” This is a mini-rock opera about Byzantine Mosaics and Culture. It wasn’t quite as long as I intended but actually did turn out pretty sweet. I’ve got more music on the way, not related to Milk or Mosaics, but an actual album, so stays tuned for that as well.
If anybody here is still a fan of “The Milk Medley,” this will be a much-appreciated sequel.

In a window of time I had an opportunity to check it out and although short it was really eargrabbing. Focused and touching and doesn’t overdo anything. I like that you conect the meaning of the concept to greater themes, at least to the extent of the runtime.
Your voice is enviable, man And the organ work is phenomenal most of all in the first and fourth tracks, the former being really funky and the latter smooth as butter. Although “Language of Power” was the one that called my attention the most with the beat switch-up, which is the best moment in the whole thing.
Complaints? Only that I’m anxious to hear the album now because it’s very promising overall, congrats SWR!!
An electric piano renaissance must be in order @ewe2 indeed.

After a long busy day, this was great to sit down and listen to!
I think the best part of this is the interplay between the rhythm of the drums and the rhythm and chord changes of that wonderful electric piano sound you’ve got going there.
Who could forget the Milk Medley…
Milk and the Byzantium Empire, two subjects that go hand in hand! (and I absolutely love that you’ve written about them)
More please!

Great stuff, love the organ (?) playing, the singing, and the cool, sort of murky jazz fusion sound on the last track. And of course it’s a great topic to write about
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
