Just the title track alone is worth the album, 7 minutes of stripped-down lean funk that’s more fun than the single edit, I just get excited how he uses rhythm like that clap on the 4th of every other bar. In fact, compared to his later work, early albums like Controversy and 1999 are masterpieces of understatement.

PurplishRain, Von BonteeI'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

It’s been nearly 3 years since the legendary Purple One has transcended into the next life. Been listening to a lot of his later period lately. Mainly Rave, Musicology, and 3121

To have Bowie and Prince leave the earth within three months of one another…knew 2016 would be a lousy year 🙁

It was like the heroes had to return to the almighty cosmos. Especially those 2 and George Michael

So I guess they just make the dead mediocre musicians sit on the sidelines?
Remember y’all, we all gotta go sometime. Regardless of whether we’re good musicians or not.

Did you ever hear “Controversy”, Qman? I don’t know that it’s my favourite (Dirty Mind => black album is quite a streak), but as an album it’s Prince at his most new-wave/post-punk, maybe.
Speaking of that album, what do we as Beatlefans have to say about that verse in “Annie Christian”?
(Punk version!)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I think it’s kinda poetic as Annie Christian in my mind represents the killer in society that cannot be stopped

I don’t think I have heard Controversy beyond the title track, actually. I’ll put it on now.

That’s my favorite Prince album. My favorite track from that is Probably Private Joy
I very much enjoyed it, particularly the title track, which I had heard before. Good album. Now to listen to 1999.

It took me awhile to get into 1999. I didn’t start fully getting into the album until about 6 months ago and now i consider it one of his bests.

Thanks for your RYM ranking – there are at least 15-20 I’ve never heard at all. A good little roadmap…a Purple Book!
(My own ranking, which was never asked for, would have had “1999” much, much higher. And “Delirious” far lower, because that one is truly the “Dizzy Miss Lizzy ” of the Prince/Revolution catalog! )
Gonna rewatch “Purple Rain ” tonight (saw it maybe twice on cable back in the day) and see if the non-musical bits look any better (or worse!) to me now.
