I’m currently on a kick of Golden Years. I’ve learnt a lot more about him over the last few days, and have began to appreciate his work a lot more too! I remember shortly after his passing, our music teacher made us make a poster about him. At the time, I have to admit I was quite lazy and only put basic facts on it. If you asked me to redo that poster now, I would have put a ton more effort and dedication into it.

I also went through a big Bowie period recently. It is sad that I only began to enjoy is his music after hearing of his passing.

I have started to listen to all of his records chronologically since I noticed this thread. I’m not sure how far I will get as it is a lot to get through but I will see how I go.

This might not be so well known, but it’s fantastic. Bring Me The Disco King, the final song on his 2003 album Reality. Mike Garson, who did the famous Aladdin Sane solo, is on piano. It’s quite long but worth listening to all the way through.

I thought I should mention when I bought Ummagumma and those singles the other day, I saw The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (£28 though). Fingers crossed it’ll still be there whenever I go next. Gotta make £28, and fast!
Also, I’m learning The Man Who Sold The World instead of Sound And Vision now. Maybe next time.

Get it if you can. It’s an excellent album to listen to.

Ziggy Stardust is an amazing album, I think my second favourite Bowie album after Alladin Sane, hopefully, you can get it!
The Man Who sold the world is also a great choice to learn as the riff is so beautiful and haunting! Will you learn it on electric or acoustic guitar?
Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

Acoustic, because that is the only one I have. I’m stuck with deciding whether I should get either a strat or a Les Paul TBH. But that is a discussion for another thread..

Strange that I happened to see the David Bowie thread of all threads right now. I’m currently at a party, and me and a couple friends just lay in a field (very drunk) for a couple hours listening to Life On Mars?, Heroes, Dandelion Wine by Gregory Alan Isakov and In My Life over and over.

Here are two recently uploaded interviews about the collaboration on Fame (one from David Bowie’s and one from John’s perspective):

Just listened to that Across The Universe cover. I’ll admit I find it way better than the Beatles versions, especially that of Let It Be .

John thought Bowie’s cover was better. I prefer John doing it.

I had a long and vivid dream about David Bowie a couple nights ago, so I’ve decided it’s finally time to listen to his stuff properly. I’ve done his first album and am on his second at the moment. I wasn’t very keen on the first — it make me think of what Syd Barrett might have done if he were more sane and less charming — but I’m liking the second very much.
Yeah yeah baby yeah. Don’t sit down. Don’t sit down. Don’t sit dowhahahahah…

^^That’s awesome @Silly Girl! To be honest, I’m not much a fan of Bowie’s very early albums but from The Man Who Sold The World on it’s fabulous (well, at least until Let’s Dance… and ignoring Pin Ups) so you have a Long, Long, Long and exciting journey before you, I hope you enjoy it!

“wonderful track” and Bowie’s debut album don’t normally go together, but yeah, that song is pretty special. Have you heard Seu Jorge’s Portuguese version from The Life Aquatic, @SgtPeppersBulldog?

So far, that is the best Bowie song I have heard. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, @SgtPeppersBulldog.

I think bowie’s best song is space oddity. I think it’s actually better than bohemian rhapsody – it came first, mixes more styles (folk, avant garde, psychedelic, jazz, rock etc) and mixes them more smoothly. Plus it’s amazing lyrically – ‘the papers want to know whose shirts you wear’ never fails to crack me up, and ‘ground control to major tom, your circuit is dead, there’s something wrong’ conveys so much tension in so few words.

Comparing Space Oddity to Bohemian Rhapsody is like comparing Coke and Diet Coke. No comparison in quality.
The Man Who Sold The World came on the radio this morning. That’s a really great song.
