Also, it appears he was having a laugh as he was dying. One of the last things he did was follow “God ” on Twitter.
Such an epic finale. Such a genius.

There is some speculation as to whether the title of Bowie’s album is taken from an Elvis song called Black Star. The Elvis song is about a man who knows he is dying and asks for a little more time to live.
It’s interesting and a little weird to see the speculation about the album take root, Tony Visconti makes an observation about Bowie dying on a Sunday and a lyric about Monday and twitter goes berserk. Few artists attract this kind of glamour.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

There’s some speculation about the Villa of Ormen lines from the song Blackstar. Some people are wondering if this Tumblr blog might have something to do with it/him. It was started on the day the video for that song was released, contains a lot of death imagery including the figure-from-the-closet image from the Lazarus video, and hasn’t been updated since December. Interesting to see if it continues.

Of course it might just be a fan who seized on a line from a new Bowie song. He wasn’t exactly an obscure artist.

Woah, interesting indeed. I’ve followed that tumblr just to keep track of it now.

That same artist also did a drawing of John and some of Marina and the Diamonds, among other things. And lots of Bowie, it seems; I liked this Blackstar one.

Mentioned over at wogblog; Paul introducing Bowie and Jagger performance of ‘Dancing In The Street’ in 1986 and playing guitar in the backing band.
The article itself is about a painting of Paul’s called ‘Bowie Spewing’ and a couple of other connections between Paul and David.
An excerpt from the article reads
David Bowie said “Paul sent me a picture of the painting, together with the question if I would mind the title of it. I answered ‘Of course not, but what a coincidence, I am currently working on a song that’s called “McCartney S***s”.
From a review at a 1999 McCartney exhibition in Siegen, Germany, where the painting was one of many on display: Although entitled “Bowie spewing”, this small painting was not planned as a portrait. As so often the case with McCartney, the subject emerged during the painting process. Experimental painting with no other motive than “just to let the paint lead the way” (McCartney) results in a physiognomy which reminds the artist of David Bowie at an early stage in his career, the time of his “Ziggy Stardust” album. This second level of consciousness causes him to include a frame in the composition of the picture, which he then decorates with mystic symbols. Using a picture within a picture, McCartney reflects here on painting as a medium. The paint running down the canvas breaks up the narrative illusion, connects the levels and draws attention to the material nature of painting. Here too McCartney makes use of his mental store of images as he is reminded of a motif similar to “Bowie spewing” on a Polaroid photo which Linda McCartney made of Bowie.

The first time I can remember seeing David Bowie would’ve been on Top Of The Pops in 1979 performing ‘Boys Keep Swinging’ with the video of him in drag.
The next time, would’ve been the following;
feature=player_embedded
It would’ve been the last thing of the 70s/first thing of the 80s I saw on tv!
It freaked out my 20-year old cousin, who was even in a punk band then!
I think Bowie’s influence will grow in the future. There aren’t many artists who have really reached out and touched as many people – maybe just Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Michael Jackson.
The only artist I can compare Bowie to now is Kate Bush, someone who takes great care of their art, and totally puts themselves in it.

For those who have a vinyl copy of Bowie’s last album, Blackstar, it seems it has a secret that has only just been discovered.
Slip the record out of the sleeve and expose the sleeve to sunlight. This is what happens…

I’m envious of anyone who’s discovering Bowie for the first time.Any best-of is a good place to start, but here are five songs that I recommend to begin with:
Life On Mars (Hunky Dory)
Young Americans (Young Americans)
Rock And Roll Suicide (Ziggy Stardust)
Drive-In Saturday (Aladdin Sane)
Boys Keep Swinging (Lodger)
Nice list, @Joe. I’d pick Life on Mars, Young Americans, Rock and Roll Suicide, Drive-In Saturday (always a fave of mine!), and Panic in Detroit. We match 4 out of 5 🙂

I saw that. I haven’t tried it with my copy, and I’m not sure I want to. It’s supposed to fade after a while out of the sun but it’s a bit of a risk. A bit like that old Led Zeppelin record in the paper bag, which changed colour when water was added (I hope I’ve remembered that correctly).
@Matt Busby I’d forgotten all about that list. I actually don’t listen to Aladdin Sane all that often – I find some of those generic rockers a bit stodgy, but I love the songs with Mike Garson (title track, Time, Lady Grinning Soul). The Prettiest Star is lovely too. I’d probably choose any of those over Panic In Detroit!
