In my view, the purpose of this thread, as stated right in the title, is to bring people together during this stressful, boring, lonely times. Political arguments are likely to cause more stress and division, not less. You’re free to critique world leaders for their responses, but I would like to avoid bogging this thread down with too much of that type of discussion.
The title of the thread wasn’t my choice, not that I have a problem with it, but the description was – a thread to bring coronavirus news, how people are feeling and dealing with this strange new world, and ways to entertain ourselves in days like these.
The idea was to bring all discussion together, including thoughts on political response, so that those who wanted to come on here as an escape to what’s going on could avoid the subject by bundling it all together.
The purpose of this thread when I suggested it was to avoid it being spread across multiple threads, expunging all comment on the responses of Governments around the world defeats that purpose.
ASJ expresses cynicism about Leo Varadkar, no complaint, no call to keep political opinion out of the thread and little follow-up or comment from others.
mmm comments on Trump and it’s “Let’s not comment on the leadership of politicians here.”
A huge chunk of this is about political leadership, and if our political leadership cannot be discussed here, it defeats my original suggestion for this thread.
For all you know, mmm’s comment may have passed by with no further comment. I’d seen it here and felt there was nothing to add. All of my comments on it have been in response to your suggestion that comment on political leadership should be barred from this thread.
I doubt we’d still be discussing were it not for your suggestion that political leaders should not be something to grumble about here.

@lovelyritametermaid you might know this already but the AP tests aren’t going to be cancelled (knock on wood), they’re going to be shortened to 45 minutes and administered at home. Plus all the questions are free-response now (which I’m not happy about, but at this point I’m just grateful the tests are still happening). As for the SATs, I know they’ve all been cancelled through May (at least they have here) but I don’t know when they’ll be available again. What I do know is that if people need to take them College Board will find a way to make them available, or if that doesn’t happen something will be worked out.
Hang in there

Thanks, Fiddy!
I knew that they were making the AP Language and Composition test online and mostly multiple-choice with one essay, but I didn’t know about the APUSH, and now that I do I am also very upset over the fact that the questions are all free-response considering throughout the year in my APUSH class 85% of our practice has been for multiple-choice! We’ve done all those timed randomized multiple-choice tests for nothing, I guess But yeah, I’m also grateful that the tests are still happening. I want my chance to earn college credit, dammit!
If the SATs are canceled throughout May in Cali, then it’s probably the same in PA considering the SAT dates are organized nationally and everyone has to take it on the same test on the same date so that no info about answers leak out. Damn. On the bright side, at least there’s more time to study!

Wait wait wait, what’s that about AP Lang? Is that one different? This is news to me, I must do some reading.
Also, I’ve just remembered, there are going to be two dates for each AP test- an earlier one for students who want to take the test before they forget everything, and a later one for those who want more time to study. Also, they’re only testing on the information that should have been covered up to this point- no new units. (I’m rather upset about that but at least it will make the tests easier!)
Hopefully they’ll figure the SATs out soon. I already took one last winter, so I have a score I can use, but I was hoping to retake it.
Everything is so messy now…

Yep. Let’s hope everything gets sorted out…..
My plan was to take the SATs twice– one in March and one in June, though that plan is now scrapped. I’ll have to take my second one in August or November I guess. There goes trying to make my senior year easier……but oh well. I hope I still get to take the ACT in July.
And yeah my AP Lang teacher was the one who gave me the news about the test, but it makes sense for the APUSH and AP Lang tests to be structured differently. But thank god we don’t have to keep covering other units…though I wonder what my class’ll even do in order to get a grade for the 4th marking period? Will we still learn despite it not being on the AP test? These are questions I’ll have to bring up during my class’s next Google Hangouts meeting (I slept through the one they had this morning…..Oops. )
No in-person school is also ruining my chances to bring some of my grades up. Hopefully somehow someway I’ll manage to bring my AP Lang grade up from a 79 to a B+ by the end of the 3rd marking period. Hopefully, they extend the 3rd marking period…..or better yet just combine the 3rd and 4th (hey, that’s not such a bad idea ) Also there’s a test that everyone else in my class took, but I didn’t have the chance to because of mental health stuff. I was banking on being able to take it the week after my classmates took it, but since we’re not returning soon, what am I going to do? I need to email my teacher……oof……

Ah now I wouldn’t describe myself as cynical about Varadkar 😉 His domestic issues namely housing and health have been woeful but the man has bloody stepped up when it comes to issues such as this pandemic and Brexit.
There’s not much I can criticise him about what he’s currently doing- the problems that we’re having are the same as what the rest of the world is having (lack of PPE etc.) Fortunately, we happen to manufacture a lot of medical supplies for the world so it’s first come, first served for us when it comes to ventilators etc. Both him and our Minister for Health, Simon Harris have been doing trojan work and I hope people will remember that when all this is over. I would like to see an alternate universe where we had a Sinn Féin coalition in power and see what they would have done.
Our government has first and foremost put people first, not the economy. We’ve got good credit to borrow and there’s not much benefit to increasing our coffers if our population is down 150,000 people. Definitely one of the more impressive and humane government responses in the world, especially compared to our neighbours both sides of us (I can say that one right? ). I think the points that are currently being made about ‘prioritising the economy’ is admitting that their country’s citizens’ and residents’ lives are expendable, particularly the elderly and those with underlying health conditions and that’s frankly disgusting.
I agree with RN, I think this thread can host criticism and praise of countries’ responses to COVID-19. I don’t think they should be moved to philosophy. If you agree or disagree with someone’s comments on Trump’s reaction to the coronavirus, I can see no reason why it shouldn’t be in the coronavirus thread.

I kept checking back on the news this morning to try and get the latest updates and all it was was repeating that Charlie had it and that within the last couple of weeks he had met Ant & Dec and Pierce Brosnan. Essential I knew that.

Scotland once had a Bond but since he pissed off and only ever returns to speak crap and poke his nose into nothing that concerns him, many cannot be bothered with him.
Which makes me wonder if Sean Connery is dead?
[A quick check]
Nope, he is still alive (I’ll avoid speculating on his tax payments as I might get sued).

Tbf Pierce is a pretty big west Brit. I think the only ones that beat him are Wogan and Gedolf who both took a knighthood.
I wonder how many people actually know he’s Irish, he comes off as a suave, posh English fella.

When I was younger I always got confused whenever my favorite English actors turned out to be Scottish, Irish, or Australian. My little American girl brain couldn’t wrap around it for some reason. Like when I was 11 and I found out that David Tennant was actually Scottish! That shook me up because before that point my only exposure to him was through DW so I just assumed that he was exactly like his Doctor. (Or sometimes its the reverse, like when I found out that Tom Holland wasn’t a fellow American). But this has nothing to do with corona some imma just end this tangent……

David Tennant is great (I always seem to be talking about autographs) but if you send something off to his management’s office, they’re sent back within a month if he’s not filming abroad. He has saved me with many a birthday present at the last minute if my funds were low (thanks DT). His wife’s Instagram is also quite funny.
I petition we change this thread to the David Tennant thread.

For all the idiots still ignoring the necessity of social distancing (police in Coventry came across more than 20 people having a barbecue on Tuesday, who refused to disperse until after the police kicked the barbecue over!!!) there are those we can be proud of.
Tuesday afternoon the Government health minister, Matt Hancock, asked for 250,000 volunteers to help out the NHS in England supporting those who need to self-isolate, or stay shielded for 12 weeks, by taking them to appointments, delivering medicine, doing shopping, or just giving those without much support a phone call to offer some human contact. A little more than 24 hours later there are now 504,303 volunteers, with the number growing all the time.
Health is devolved in the UK and so it has been suggested that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland follow suit.
The majority of people, the best, are pulling together to get us through this, as I know very well because of an offer of help I received if needed (though I hope never to need to ask for the help offered).
For all those helping rather than hindering…
And for those still insisting on being a dick…

One Scot a minute signs up to volunteer
After Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland called for volunteers to help with its efforts to fight against coronavirus, an average of one person per minute has signed up.
Volunteers have agreed to make “kindness calls” to help those isolating and help with tasks like delivering shopping and dog walking for those in high-risk groups.
