My county’s parks department is shooting to open all of their pools (including the one at which I work) on June 13th (which is subsequent to change, obviously, but that’s the target date). The swim test that all applying lifeguards have to take (which includes me bc returning employees also have to take the aquatics test every year for some reason but I guess it makes sense) is still TBD though, which stresses me out because I haven’t swum since January oof…I also have to make sure that I haven’t lost the certificates that prove that I’m certified in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Lifeguarding…..
As much as i would like for you to get your job back, i wish they would wait for another ~2 years until the virus is gone for good and give everyone paid leave in the meantime.
Even if the pool is properly maintained and enforces social distancing measures, it only takes one cough to get everyone in the pool sick and considering there’s people intentionally trying to spread the virus (or even pretending to), this can be very dangerous. Not to mention, wearing a face mask underwater can be deadly because the wet material will get stuck to your face in the same way a wet T shirt does and prevent you from breathing until you get it off so they’ll have to allow people to not wear one while in the water, which increases your chances of getting the virus.
The world economy would be decimated.

even so in that situation I wouldn’t get paid leave because I’m a seasonal employee– my managers and Dep. of Facilities (maintenance workers and engineers) will, but not lifeguards or any other part-time staff.
Also waiting 2 years to reopen anything sounds incredulously unrealistic and I do hope that we found a better solution to combatting this virus before we get to that point.

“There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.“
Plus, I’m sure that there will be new rules instated by the county parks department to ensure proper social distancing and hygienic procedures are taken at the public pools. We would probably be required to follow these guidelines for the proper cleaning and disinfecting of businesses and recreational centers recommen.ded by the CDC, and as I a lifeguard I would probably be required to now reinforce that patrons are following social distancing procedures. Also, we would probably put a cap on the number of people allowed in the premises at a time (though this will be probably be protested by the same idiots who insist that they should be allowed to swim when lightning is spotted). Swim teams, clubs, and other large groups will probably be prohibited from using the pool, the annual triathlon will be canceled probably, and so will swim lessons most likely (oof there go all my extra hours but oh well)
But of course, the most important factor is that patrons must be smart and aware enough and know to keep away from other patrons for their own safety. Patrons must also be smart enough not to come to the facilities if they have a chance of being infected or if they are infected.

It does impress me @Dark Overlord , how you can go from arguing that the lockdown should be lifted for everyone who isn’t highly vulnerable to arguing that businesses shouldn’t reopen for years. How come you shifted opinion so much?

While i was only arguing for public pools to remain closed for the next ~2 years, there are a few reasons why i’ve gone full circle:
1. I want the economy to collapse so we can peacefully destroy Western civilization as we know it and create a better society from the ground up (i’ll admit it’s a gamble but it’s a risk i’m willing to take)
2. We’ve already done the lockdowns, so we mind as well continue until goal #1 is achieved
3. The virus is far more serious than i originally anticipated (~1 in 200 Americans have been confirmed to have it) and while i hate our society, i don’t want people to die just to fix it
4. There are plenty of idiots who think COVID is harmless and the fearmongering surrounding it is just a conspiracy theory or even worse, are trying to intentionally spread the virus, meaning that we might have to reinstate the lockdown in the fall, especially if the 2nd wave is the deadlier one like it was with the Spanish flu
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Errr no thanks– and why just Western civilization? No offense, but that statement just sounds ridiculous to me. Anarchy is foolish and is never the answer.
2. We’ve already done the lockdowns, so we mind as well continue until goal #1 is achieved
The lockdowns are a temporary solution as stated by health officials and epidemiologists on multiple occasions and is meant to be utilized as a tool to buy them more time while they work on finding a better solution to defeating the virus. And how are people supposed to even survive in lockdown mode with the economy and the government out of the works? People would frickin’ starve and everything would just be utter chaos! And how are health officials and scientists supposed to do anything to aid in the dissipation of the pandemic if the economy is collapsed? If anything what you’re wishing for will just make everything 10x worse.
3. The virus is far more serious than i originally anticipated (~1 in 200 Americans have been confirmed to have it) and while i hate our society, i don’t want people to die just to fix it
More people will die if Western civilization has to frickin’ rebuild from the ground up if it collapses. A complete redo of civilization isn’t going to do anything to help the dissipation of the pandemic– Western civilization needs to stay intact now more than ever if this virus is to ever be defeated.

I wonder if NHS will keep us informed of how they are spending the money he raised.

We have the info…https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne…..ients.html
Coronavirus patients are able to keep in touch with loved ones thanks to iPads bought with money raised by Captain Tom Moore.
People unable to receive hospital visitors have been given the devices after the 100-year-old war veteran raised £32million for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his garden.
More than £20million raised by Captain Tom, who was promoted to Honorary Colonel on his birthday last week, has already been handed out by NHS Charities Together.
It was split between 225 hospital charities to improve life for patients and health staff, and will be spent on comfortable seating areas, staff water coolers, coffee machines, food and toiletries.
Funds have also been spent on counselling sessions and hotel rooms for NHS workers staying away from home to protect vulnerable family members.
Ian Lush, chairman of NHS Charities Together, said: ‘The incredible amount of money raised by Colonel Tom Moore is already reaching the frontline and making huge improvements to the daily lives of patients and NHS staff. We are not about replacing Government funding, it is about enhancing what is there, paying for better fixtures and fittings and things that are non-essential items in terms of health care but that are nice to have.
‘The money the British public has so generously donated in the last four weeks will have a lasting legacy for years and make a huge difference to the well-being of staff and patients.’

And meanwhile millions of people are thrown into poverty and cannot obtain basic supplies like food or toilet paper or other relatively essential things. Seems rather a coldhearted solution to me as it will hurt so many people so badly.
2. We’ve already done the lockdowns, so we mind as well continue until goal #1 is achieved
The country can’t survive on lockdown forever and, again, destroying the economy is a terrible idea.
3. The virus is far more serious than i originally anticipated (~1 in 200 Americans have been confirmed to have it) and while i hate our society, i don’t want people to die just to fix it
But you’re ok with them being thrown into poverty to accomplish the same thing?
4. The 4000-bed emergency London NHS Nightingale Hospital is being wound down and will close next week. It’s not had more than 20 patients at a time.
I do wonder why they haven’t really used it. To me the sensible thing to do would have been to have all London Covid-19 patients there and free up normal hospitals to treat other health issues.

Health systems do not work reasonably. One of our hospitals continued transporting with patients from a hospital that had COVID19 in it, to a hospital without any cases….can you guess what happened?
Will anyone ever be held responsible for the needless deaths of people? No!
