How can it be “merry” Good Friday? Jesus died 🙁 .
To answer your question, he died so that we may seek salvation by believing in him. It was written in the Bible that a centurion and a fellow crucified prisoner both acknowledged Jesus as the messiah so you could say that they were saved on that day because Jesus died.
Also it’s worth mentioning that in the Book of Mathew notes that several holy men were risen from the dead, where they are recognized by their friends and family, so you can assume that said family and friends are very happy.
Also it should be doubly noted that Jesus’s death was a very significant moment in Peter’s life, where following his resurrection Peter wholeheartedly devoted his life to preaching the gospel (all the disciples did, except Judas for obvious reasons). So in a way, you could call it character development.
Side note: It was recently announced by my country’s PM that the lockdown will ensue for the next two weeks, with several economic sectors reopened under tight scrutiny.
Additional side note: I do hope I don’t sound condescending in typing this, and if so I am sorry about it. Also do tell me if I am violating forum rules so that I may delete this post or move it elsewhere, thanks.

^You’re not condescending at all.
Good Friday is always the ‘day of depression’ here. Shops closed earlier (or weren’t open at all), the church bell rings at 3pm, the church is bare, you don’t genuflect because there’s no Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle (i.e. Jesus isn’t there).
The Catholic Church always takes it as a day of sorrow. I found the document for Lent, Holy Week and Easter, Paschales Solemnitatis, and it describes Good Friday as “a day of Penance….the abasement of “earthly man,”[68]…..the grief and sorrow of the Church”.
If you hold a funeral on Good Friday (which I don’t know why you would do unless you’re in extraordinary times like now) apparently you’re not allowed to have any music, there’s something I learned today.

It’s Good Friday because Jesus died paying the price for our sins because we cannot. The whole of the Old Testament is how humans went about trying to be clean and right with God after Adam and Eve screwed it up but the price was always far too high and we always fell short (the coming of Christ is foretold in a number of prophecies and scriptures). Jesus (the truly righteous sacrificial lamb) paid that price by willingly dying on the cross for us and therefore it is only by believing in Jesus and what he did that saves us, not by our works. On the third day (which is now Easter Monday) he rose, appeared to many (Thomas was another), and then went around seeing and speaking to many before going up to heaven (I think 40 days later but could be wrong).
That’s all according to the Bible in case anyone wants to start debating religion., which I don’t.

If I may add something, there was also the incident during the crucifixion where the temple curtain separating the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place was split apart from top to bottom, symbolizing that man had no need for any lengthy procedures and sacrificing rituals. As long as you believe in Jesus, the gap between you and God is bridged.
Also, another good thing about Good Friday are the hot cross buns that I usually make during Good Friday, and I must say they do taste great. I do sometimes wonder if Jesus liked hot cross buns, though it sounds silly now that I am saying it out loud. Perhaps after the lockdown in my country is over I could make more buns.

I am a bishop and I normally celebrate Holy Week at my home oratory but I’m on 14-day quarantine for bronchitis symptoms and I thought it best to just rest since no one is coming to mass anyway. I will bless the holy oils at a future date. I might have communion from the reserved sacrament on Easter morning.
I belong to a denomination called Liberal Catholic and we don’t believe Jesus died for our sins. We believe we are all on the same road to Christhood and that Christ gave us the Sacraments as a way to help us get there.
There are some people calling themselves Liberal Catholic who don’t believe that way, but they are Liberal Catholic in name only. I like to call them “Roman Light,” because they are basically like Roman priests except they can marry.
Liberal Catholic priests can marry or be openly gay and we believe in reincarnation and chakras and ascended masters.

Now you’ve gone and put the song in my head! Perhaps I’ll dig out my old recorder and torture my family with it today… then again, that may not be wise, I’m stuck in here with them for another month at the very least.

I’m delighted I’m on my own thru this as if there was someone else here I’d have gone mad weeks ago. As it is I can do whatever to get thru the days without having to respond to anyone, makes it so much easier. No pretence required, no requirements.

Today my brother got laid off from his job at the engineering company he worked for because of what’s been happening. They cut off his pay, which super sucks, but the silver lining is that the company is allowing him to keep his benefits until this worldwide crisis is resolved/he gets another job, and there’s also hope that they’ll rehire him by that time, too; however, it is still a very worrisome situation since now he now has no income to pay for rent, utilities, groceries, and stuff for his dog.

Obligatory (by law) quarantine period just got itself extended to the 26th on Argentina a few days (?) ago.
Honestly, I don’t know what to make of it. At first it seemed right but people are starting to complain they just can’t handle themselves without income for this month. I’m young, and I work from home, but I don’t know what would I do if I worked in a currently-closed business. It really is concerning.
I try to make the best out of it. I’m taking the time productively but now there are people that actually claim they are getting hungry and they can’t pay their rent. I still think I agree with the government, but damn, this is going down fast.

Apologies for the absence, a combination of low data and low mood… but both are recharged…
Nasty’s Coronavirus Thread Album of the Day…
From 1988, and I’m imagining a big grin appearing on the faces of the Bontee brothers, the wonderful Mary Margaret O’Hara, her debut, and pretty much only album Miss America, she would go on to do a soundtrack for Apartment Hunting 12 years later… but apart from that… some guest vocals with others and an occasional track on a compilation… this was it…
One of those artists you scratch your head over, a beautiful artist who you wonder why there isn’t more, and why most of you will be going “Who?”
This is a beautiful and often forgotten masterpiece, in my opinion…

Sister of Catherine O’Hara of SCTV/tv/movie fame!
I’ve never heard her lone LP – I’ve got one Gary Lucas album where she takes a vocal but that’s it.
Will listen later, after checking out “Music on the Internet…” from ewe2, Qman, Vera Chuck & Dave…Hope MMO’Hs LP is as enjoyable as your last two offerings (I’d forgotten how much I liked “New York” back in the day)…glad your data is restored & mood is less Nasty!
