I’m hoping it will encourage companies in the US and other countries to move more of their production out of China, ideally they’d return to domestic production.

I would imagine all the cuts from the health systems in the UK, USA and Aus would and should all be reversed.
People will probably travel less.
Those who’ve switched from supermarkets to local greengrocers/butchers and the like will probably stay with the local shops.

Thanks to those who took the time to listen to the first Album of the Day, The Waterboys’ Fisherman’s Blues, and to those who shared their thoughts.A lot of the icons of the ’60s/’70s had dreadful ’80s. Album after album we would hold our heads in our hands and wail, “Why? You’re better than this!” But then, in 1988 and 1989, there were a string of albums that were not only returns to form but career highlights. Paul, George, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, the list goes on of those who found themselves again at the end of the decade.
One of them was Lou Reed who, after a dreadful decade of releases, offered us a portrait of his home city struggling with a disease and a downturning economy with 1989’s New York. A darker offering than yesterday’s, Nasty’s 2nd Album of the Day.
All thoughts with those in New York, City and state.
Promise tomorrow’s choice will be brighter. I’m toying with two. Do I dare do a third album from 1988/89?
We shall see…
Haven’t played this in 30 years, but I did like it at the time. (One rhyme that I’ve never forgotten: “They ordained the Trumps and then he got the mumps…”) I’ll give another listen (or two!) in awhile and share a thought (or two).

I think we will shake hands, and the French will kiss one another on the cheek. No one will learn any lessons. The world will move on and all lessons will be forgotten. I don’t hold out much hope for humanity in aggregate. Hospitals probably won’t even stock up on PPE. Come on world, prove me wrong!!
Now as to whether I’ll put my retirement savings into a less risky category…IDK yet.

How to survive quarantine, in 215 songs
…The most nominated artist was the Mountain Goats, who have four songs on the list, though if you give John Lennon credit for both the songs he performed with the Beatles and as a solo act, he has five songs on the list….
The 5: Isolation , Imagine , While My Guitar Gently Weeps , Let It Be , Hey Jude
Here Comes The Sun is also on the list…George live from Madison Square Garden.
Glad to see people still loving on the Beatles.
What would be on a Beatles Bible Beatles-only playlist?

Cool, I used to frequent (and currently IN-frequent) a music messageboard where lead Goat John Darnielle posts regularly.

I volunteered to go to the supermarket this evening (mainly as an excuse to build up on my secret crisp pile). I bought other junk for the family, a chocolate bar and fruit pastilles for one brother, two packets of crisps for the other, almond slices for the mam, and Bakewell slice and coconut buns for me….and 2 litres of milk.
Within 2 minutes of me coming home, 2/6 of the Bakewells are eaten by my dad, one coconut by my mam, one coconut by my dad. >:(

Sorry but Bakewells are fair game, especially in lockdown. You should have hidden them from view before entering the house and used the coconut buns as a distraction to be able to sneak them in your room. A rookie mistake but you’ll learn, albeit the hard way.

I’m sorry, @Beatlebug, been biting my tongue since I read that, and it’s probably a stupid question, but how would that affect and change the course of the next pandemic? And we do know there will be a next pandemic. Even if countries took their production out of China and moved it to the US, US production is pretty much shut down. What would be different? Apart from the prices you have to pay which is why so much manufacturing has been moved abroad and services (like call centres) from the G7 countries because they know their populations want everything as cheap as possible.
Simple question, how much more are you prepared to pay on things being domestically made, because most domestic industry and services were driven overseas, to low cost economies, because we wanted stuff to be cheaper?
And, again, how would bringing manufacturing and service industries home prevent another pandemic unless you ban all international travel forever.
I just don’t follow the logic.

@Ron Nasty I wouldn’t say it’s a stupid question but it’s not super relevant to my point, as I never said it was about preventing a pandemic, that wasn’t the original inquiry (which IIRC was very general, about what lasting effects the pandemic will have).
It does have to do with lessening the supply chain issues that arise when you have a pandemic and all your s**t is made in China, including most drugs and gloves and face masks and everything. And also just not supporting an economy that supports a fascist state that covers up a virus outbreak to save face, because misery loves company, costing thousands of lives and economies and therefore more lives around the world.
My family and I already avoid buying anything made in China as much as we possibly can, so I’m doing the free market thing already, which is all any one individual citizen can really do at this point.

Very moving, both of those videos. The BBC got it spot on.
Seems kind of out of place for me to mention the lack of Nasty’s album of the day now, which is what I was coming here to do…

What this pandemic should do is re-evaluate the worth society puts on those doing all these jobs like bus drivers, binmen, shop workers, NHS workers and fix it. They rarely go into the jobs for the money but the crap wages, working conditions and s**t they have gotten off the government over the last decade certainly plays a part in them leaving. It will mean the well-off being willing to take cuts as who else will pay for it? No point upping taxes in general as that only hits those more in need.
Will it happen? I think there will be a token gesture, something like 3% over 3 years and a one-off gratitude bonus for all that they have been done plus a huge thank you, know we love you, whilst the fat-cats continue to earn their thousands a month.

Update Mam has now eaten 3 of the coconut buns. I said to her to buy me new ones on Saturday, she laughed. I don’t think I’m getting my buns 🙁

She asks me for one and I simply cannot say no.
Especially if she says “can I have a bun before I go and clean the gutters across the road?”. I would not like to be cleaning the gutters so I keep her content with coconut buns.
