For what it’s worth, I have heard that the WHO is pretty corrupt, actually. It’s difficult to know who to trust anymore, especially as no one really knows what’s actually going on, but some sources are definitely more trustworthy than others… sticking to government info seems wise, unless it’s a horribly corrupt government like the Chinese Communist PartyApologies, Bebu, but that is as big a pile of steaming dog doodah as the idea that 5G masts can spread COVID-19. Most Governments are following, and sharing, WHO advice. Criticism of WHO advice is coming from those nutters who believe Governments shouldn’t be listening to them and advocating steps that damage the economy.
Did you even watch the video I linked?

Yes, @Beatlebug, I did.
It is an argument against the steps we are all being asked to take to stay at home, which is the main plank of the WHO advice, and falls in line with much right wing criticism of international bodies, something Trump likes doing. Right wing commentators are not big fans of international bodies who praise the approach of communist/socialist states.
Interesting how many times he mentions an accusation against the WHO, to follow it with “I don’t know if it’s true” or words to that effect.

Scotland’s chief medical officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood, has been withdrawn from her public speaking role due to not following the advice given by Scotland’s chief medical officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood. She drove to her second home 40 odd miles away where she went for a walk with her family and dogs and stayed the night. She has also been issued a warning by the police.
If ever there was an example of complete stupidity.

I didn’t get that impression that that was the message of the video, but whatever.

The press conference earlier was excruciating as she attempted to keep her job. Her remaining as the lead medical spokesperson was really untenable. Not good when those we’re asked to listen to break their own advice/instructions to us.

So true. I was recently unfriended on Facebook by this guy whose “Libertarian” leanings led him to say such things as “We should all ignore the pandemic and go back to work.” If corporations can get billion dollar bailouts, then certainly governments can create social programs to enable us to stay home and not die.

Totally off topic but I’m just finishing my FIRST EVER playing of “Fisherman Blues” and quite enjoying; totally get that wild-mercury Dylan vibe as advertised.

It should be noted, @Beatlebug, that within the last couple of months your President looked to half the US funding given to the World Health Organisation, and the lead line of the video you shared was about the contribution made to its funds by US taxpayers, followed by unsustained accusations of corruption, and the suggestion that they had not been critical enough of China responses in the early months of this crisis.
As I said, most Governments – including yours and mine – are offering responses based on the WHO advice – with the exception of testing, testing, testing in both our countries, which has been totally crap.

I think that’s the main gripe I have with the Trump Administration regarding their confrontation with China. For one, I am happy that they are at least willing to show pushback against Chinese economic influence (which coming from a Malaysian citizen, I’m not too keen with), as well as plenty of criticism of their human rights violations. However, Trump’s key motto of “America First”, seems to counter any non-China statement or measure, as by limiting their foreign assistance to other countries, they have effectively limited countries to pick only China as their super-powerful trading partner. I can understand that Trump wants to reserve US taxpayer money to combat the virus in the country, as they are already struggling to begin with. But by doing so, it only further proves the rhetoric that countries can only rely on China and China only. Once the virus is over, I can expect much of the world to begin siding with China over the virus, not the least being Italy, Spain, Philippines, Malaysia, and maybe even South Korea.
It doesn’t really help that plenty of Chinese spokesperson are at least willing to voice out support for other nations in the time of the pandemic, though whether they mean it is always up for debate. The American government not once said anything that at least made a non-American like myself believe that the American government is on my side, though I could be wrong or have overlook that part. It’s like, come on, even an authoritarian country like China can hire a PR guy.
I would, of course, love to hear others opinions about it.

Thanks to those who took the time to listen to the first Album of the Day, The Waterboys’ Fisherman’s Blues, and to those who shared their thoughts.
A lot of the icons of the ’60s/’70s had dreadful ’80s. Album after album we would hold our heads in our hands and wail, “Why? You’re better than this!” But then, in 1988 and 1989, there were a string of albums that were not only returns to form but career highlights. Paul, George, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, the list goes on of those who found themselves again at the end of the decade.
One of them was Lou Reed who, after a dreadful decade of releases, offered us a portrait of his home city struggling with a disease and a downturning economy with 1989’s New York. A darker offering than yesterday’s, Nasty’s 2nd Album of the Day.
All thoughts with those in New York, City and State…
Promise tomorrow’s choice will be brighter. I’m toying with two. Do I dare do a third album from 1988/89?
We shall see…

So I’m on side 2 now, and I have a few observations. While I can see how this would have been one of those amazing comeback albums, it doesn’t as much as I feel it should for me. I love the instrumental aspect – very well recorded, great musos, lots of cool little bits and pieces, especially in the guitars – it feels very well rehearsed. The lyrics are wonderfully written too – naturally, it’s acclaimed for them.
But I’m not a fan of the speak/singing style that Lou uses here. I like a good melody, harmonies are good too – and there’s not enough of it to keep my ears interested. I totally see how this would be perfect for some people but unfortunately the lack of melody is a large drawback for me.
But, and I cannot stress this enough, the instrumental tracks are fabulous. The intro to Busload of Faith in particular is just, everything I need in an intro!
