i could lose my computer. it’s doing weird things. first it prompted me to update itunes and i did then it froze, then i totaly had to reinstall but it took a few tries, then (with some help from someone) i looked in task manager and found there were 22 programs running on my com that starts automaticly when i start my computer. then after i got my itunes fixed a week later my com seem to froze up so i had to do an emergency shutdown meaning i had to pust the power button off while i could not get the “Start menu” up and shut down from there. and then i restarted my com it had to do a CHKDSK thing but it froze in the middle of that so i rebooted again, this time i skipped the CHKDSK and it started but my enire itunes library and playlists were erased (i still had my music file, at least) but i had to start all over again. (it wasn’t hard this time because i had the itunes playlists and library exported to a portable drive)
but then my internet kept running slow. i have to use an internet booster because my wifi antenna is weak. most time my com will not automaticly connect to the booster like it should. that makes my internet connection weak. It used to did not matter which connection it used. the internet box is connected to the booster so regardles it works from the booster BUT it is stronger if my com is connected to the booster name (brutus) which is connected to (cablmas) if it says it is connected its connected to “brutus” it is stronger but if the connection is “cablmas” then it’s weaker. But my com keeps wanting to go to “cablmas” and at times gets disconnected. plus theres other stuff going on i can not explain. in the meantime, everytime i start my com, it wants to CHKDSK, but i bypass because if i let it CHKDSK, it’ll freeze in the middle of it.
So i guess i’m just warning you, if i do not come back on for sometime. you’ll know why. i just hope and pray my com is not on it’s last leg.

iTunes has been hell for me the past few weeks. I finally got it to sync everything, though the Abbey Road /Venus And Mars cover thing is still screwed up.

Last night I opened iTunes and it promptly told me all my files were gone, the main programme was corrupt, i had to reinstall it and then my laptop turned itself off. Turned it back on in a bit of concern in case it was knackered and everything was fine. Strange.

Sorry to hear about this.
I stopped using Windows many years ago. I’ve used Linux since then and have never been tempted to go back.
CHKDSK I assume means “Check Disk” which can be important – if your filesystem becomes corrupted you have had it.
As long as your computer is still operating back up any important data to another hard drive if you can, so if the worst comes to the worst and your computer completely dies, at least when you get a new one, you will be able to move your photos, music etc onto the new machine.
As far as your wireless is concerned, remember you don’t have to use names, you can use IP addresses, which I find less hassle personally.
The IP address is a long number eg 192.168.1.132
Alternatively, if you find wireless problematic and running ethernet cable around your house is not feasible, you could consider investing in some powerline adapters. These allow you to use the ordinary mains sockets in your house as your network.

I updated mine right before it started working, so I’m thinking that might have been it. Don’t know what’s up with yours. Glad it turned out fine

I back-up files often to an actual computer hard drive so that everything is saved. Tho i did have a lot of files on a share drive which broke and i lost a lot of flac and zip files. Right pain that was.

My laptop just gave up… I think I could fix it with the repair disc IF I could find it…Is your data at least backed up?
Yes, and I have a repair disc for a different computer that won’t do a complete restore but will let me restore from backup, but I can’t find my backup!

No idea. I think its a an ipod 4, its white and has 4 lines for the apps whereas nowadays the new ones have five. A sync will probably sort it out.

After a day and a half of trying to fix my old laptop (been useless for about two years now) by reinstalling Windows 7, I’ve finally fixed it! But not with Windows… that kept giving me errors or freezing before it finished installing. After much frustration, I had the bright idea to try LInux, because why not? I downloaded Ubuntu and that worked!
I have my laptop back! My files(whatever I didn’t have backed up) are still somewhere on the computer, and although I can’t access them now, I assume they’re safe for the moment.

^ I have had so many computers die over the years that I finally started doing proper data backups. Now I just shrug and get something new from Aldi -> though re-installing dozens of games is really annoying. I don’t have much digital music so iTunes and similar are not an issue for me, I hear so many stories of it messing up.

iTunes has never caused me any trouble (it will now that I’ve said that!)
In other news, it froze while installing drivers, I restarted, it decided to not boot Ubuntu (Linux), and now I have to reinstall it…
But! in the amount of time it was working I found out that I could access my files from the other partition!! So glad I decided not to format it and delete everything when I was working on it.
Almost done reinstalling, and hopefully I won’t have anymore problems!

Nope, I’m not the computer-savvy one; I’m the one who’s asking the question. I’m facing a little problem and thought I’d start a new thread where we Beatle Biblers could ask about problems with our computers. Now, I know there’s a new “Beatles-Only” Policy, but I hope the Mods believe there’s a place for this new thread in the forum.
My problem: a friend of mine lent me the whole two movies and twenty episodes of “Kolchak”, an old (’70s) American TV show; genre? Fantasy, horror, SCI-FI, and touches of humor. I want to watch the whole series again; it’ll take me back to my childhood. The problem is that it’s in .mp4 format, and I don’t have an .mp4 player. I’ve downloaded five different free programs from download.com, but none of them worked. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks, Oudis.

The “Beatles-only” policy only applies to the games. Joe doesn’t mind off-topic discussion in general.
As far as the question (computer savvy guy here), I don’t understand exactly what you’re asking. Do you want to be able to play the video or to be able to convert them to a format that you can play on your computer currently?

Hi @Necko, thanks for you speedy reply. I just want to play the video in its current format, I need an .mp4 player. I’ve had very bad experiences with software that converts .mp4 to other formats.
