Depends on how you see it. I dont hate christmas but i’d be far happier if everyone just got on with things but in the same manner (ie the polite, courteous one) everyday. Don’t wait until the 25th December before getting in contact when you can do it on the 17th July.

I detest the commercialism of the day, all the money wasted on crap that most of the time is unwanted or unneeded; the idea that for one day everyone should be happy, bright and full of cheer and want to be with family regardless of whatever has gone on in the past or just who that individual is (their character); the idea that for all its a joyous time when for many its a time of great sadness.

Christmas time already? Seems like Halloween was only 4 days ago.

Wait …what?

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

No one seems to have followed John’s advice to “remember, remember, the 5th of November” instead jumping from Halloween to Christmas.a-hard-days-night-john-7a-hard-days-night-john-4

Haven’t seen the Coca-Cola ad on the telly yet (holidays are coming…) or the Kellogg’s (hohoho) so does it really mean that Christmas is soon?

In other news we have no laptop atm (hence why I’m not posting as much) so I’m checking my mam’s emails for her one of them said ‘Have a Very Merry Sexmas’ and then the prize-winning slogan “Ho Ho Oh” xD got a chuckle out of that one

^ Ah, I was wondering why you’ve not been posting much. Glad to hear it’s only your laptop that’s poorly. I’ve given up on mine. I think I’ll bury it soon.

I’ve been seeing loads of Xmas adverts, though not those, like you. I’ve got the song of the Morrisons (?) one in my head. The one with Ant and Dec in it. I’m in class with ”gingerbread, chocolate bomb…” , or something going round. Not ideal when you’re trying to concentrate on Physics :/

Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

I just put together a playlist with Christmas songs on Spotify, since my dad always loses my downloaded cd’s with those songs on it. It might not look that charming, a laptop in the corner of the room, but at least there’s more room for more songs than on a cd.

I’ve also seen quite a lot of decorated houses already, which strikes me as odd. They’ve been decorated since the beginning of November already and I thought that was quite early, especially since we also have Sinterklaas a few weeks before.

I love watching those decorations though. Some people have these little houses that give light in their window and sometimes they have a whole city with an icerink and people and bakery stands and trees and even little lanterns and all. I love watching those. They’re so kitsch. Not the ones with blue or pink lights though, those are ugly. Just the ones with ”normal” light. We actually have a few of those too, and some trees and people and some lanterns too. It has sorta become my thing to put it somewhere and make it look good and I love it.

Wow I really can’t wait to decorate the house!

I can’t be doing with all that decorating nowadaysblue-meanie but when folks get trees do they go for real or artificial ones. I was always a real tree person as i love the smell of them.

I grew up with real ones. You’re right they do smell wonderful. But, hubby had an artificial one when I married him, so we just use that one. Mom still puts up a real one so I just enjoy the smell when I go see her.

I got my Christmas cards out so I will be ready to address them on my break this coming week.

We always used to have real ones, but my mom got really annoyed with the needles falling everywhere and my dog kept hurting herself somehow. And 2 years ago the tree was nearly needle-less by the time it was Christmas. So last year we bought an artificial one. I had to get used to it, but it’s not one of those super fake trees. It looks pretty good.

Bought my Christmas outfit today. I wanted something that wasn’t too uncomfortable, especially since I always eat a lot so I just bought a black cardigan with sequins all over it and waxed skinny jeans. It sorta looks like they’re made of some kind of leather, but not really. I quite love them. It wasn’t expensive and it’s comfortable enough.

MMM, I don’t know if you’ve ever mentioned it, but what do you actually do for Christmas? How do you celebrate it? I’m quite curious as you don’t come across as being all too enthousiastic about it.

I ignore it as much as possible. Some of my family go to a hotel over the 3 days (Christmas Eve to Boxing Day) so i go see them for some of the 25th but apart from that i’m at home. The first time i did this was last year and i enjoyed far more than many previously (the benefit of keeping a journal is that it helps you see how things actually were at the time and not just how you think they were).

I just don’t get it, all the expense, waste, and overindulgence all “because its Christmas” – “eat, drink and be merry”.

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but have you had bad some experiences with Christmas? Because I can understand why people don’t care much for it if they have experienced something bad.

I personally always loved it. There were always good vibes and we always had a great time. I think that makes a difference. I know other people who don’t care for it. One of my best friends is a Jehova’s Witness and another one just wasn’t brought up like me. Her mom thought it was nonsense to put that much effort into it if they’re only with three anyway. They never even have a tree. I think the way people are brought up is a huge influence.

All my family like it a lot, all that getting together and all that and i grew up having great Christmases. Just over the years all the sparkle comes off and it became a right pain.

I detest immensely the idea that everyone has to be happy, smiley, and for 1 day a year be something they are not for the rest of the year. I’m not a social person, i’m not a talker, as posted elsewhere i also have a dislike for family gatherings (i attend very very few). It’s basically everything i am not wrapped up in 1 day.

Well, I, for one, am extremely pleased that you are social on the forum and “talk” to us a lot. You have so many funny, entertaining, and insightful thoughts to contribute. The place wouldn’t be the same without you.

Same here – there is something immensely satisfying in saying ‘bah – humbug’.  But I have always made sure the kids had great Christmas experiences to remember.

That’s basically what Christmas is all about anyways: the kids. Now that I have a child, Christmas actually means something to me again, because before I became a dad, I could have cared less about Christmas. Since I became an adult, my standard reply to what I want has always been either “Just gift cards” or “Nothing, I don’t really need anything.” Which forces my family to get creative: for instance, this Christmas I’m getting 4 new tires and a re-alignment for my van from my parents. And trust me, that’s all the Christmas present I need. That way, they can spoil their grandson. (Which they do a good job with.)
