We lost some of this discussion, so to summarise:

.mp3s have crap sound, they are encoded at around 300kbps or lower

CDs have decent sound, they are encoded at around 1400kbps

Music on bluray is best, it can be lossless sound.  Neil Young has released Volume 1 of his archive in this format, he is also developing (at great cost) a lossless portable music player.

If you listen on your laptop or portable music player none of this matters.  If you have a good music system and your ears still work (not TOO much Deep Purple in your youth) then it makes a significant difference.

Hence, some of us want to see the Beatles bootlegs released on physical media and not just iTunes (apart from those of us who just dislike iTunes for a variety of amazingly sound reasons).

I hope that was about it!

Just wondering what your opinion of the HD albums? I ended up buying Paul’s album for the video. It might have been overkill for that purpose, but it’ll sound killer when I can one afford a million dollar sound system. ;-D

Check out my fan video for Paul's song "Appreciate" at Vimeo or YouTube.

I’m going to sound from the Dark Ages but what is an HD album, never heard of one?

I’m not sure either :)

parlance – are you referring to a SACD or some other format?

I won’t pretend to know much on the subject, but HD albums have higher sample rates than your average CDs. In the case of Paul’s NEW, the tracks at this site are 96kHz/24bit. Here’s the FAQ at that site.

I’m curious to know if anyone here makes a point of buying albums of this quality.

Cheers – I have heard that the FLAC files are the way to go and are significantly better than .mp3 – as I don’t ‘do’ digital files I don’t have any myself to compare, sorry.

Oh, and mmm – the SACD were a new CD format that had high sound resolution but they never caught on.  Even my 500 pound equivalent bluray player doesn’t want to know about them – though they have a standard CD layer which should play on most anything.  The Live in Japan set in George’s Dark Horse box is in this hybrid format and should play CD sound on a low-end player and better sound on a high-end SACD-compatible.

I’ve heard about SACD exactly because of that Live In Japan disc in the Dark Horse box, never knew what it did tho. I think in total i’ve seen about 3.

FLAC files are far superior to mp3’s, that i do know. If you venture into the world of bootlegs generally FLAC is what is sought and wanted for trading and sharing whereas if you offer mp3’s you are met with puzzled faces with a look of “right, stop joking about, where is the good stuff?”. I suppose you could compare it to something like a vinyl source and tape source. Vinyl will do if thats it but tape is the business.

My husband just ordered my Christmas present. It is a Kenwood KMM-100U for my car that plays FLAC files along with all the other digital formats. I am loved heart.

I should have elaborated. It’s not like I just told him exactly which radio/digital player to order. I told him I wanted a car radio/digital player for my car. He spent time looking through all the options to pick out the best one. While he was browsing, he mentioned one that played FLAC. He didn’t know what that was. I got hyper excited. He got a shocked look on his face. He made sure that it would fit in the radio slot in my car and ordered it. He is a jack-of-all-trades handy man so I know he will do a wonderful job with the installation. Part of the “I am loved” comment refers to the time he spent looking at the options so I didn’t have to.

Yes, you presume correctly, mmm. We had a hamster once. That’s the closest he came to enjoying an actual live rodent. The others just end up in traps.

Cool – my son has a Razer Naga which he really likes.  It has multiple programmable buttons on one side for the games he plays.  I stick to the basic one – three buttons are all I can manage :)

I abhor computer games. The most fun I’ve ever gotten out of one was one day when he was playing one I recognized the voice that came on between shooting scenes. It was an actor from one of my favorite t.v. shows. The line we repeat from the game that the actor/voice says: “There’s tangos at the taco joint.”

Cue the operatic “AHHHHHHHHHH.” I don’t care who in the h*ll sings it.

I just found out that the mp3 player I’ve had for months plays flac files. I just never thought to look until the conversation about my Christmas present took place today. Albums are sorted nice and neat in this format. I am one happy camper!!!!a-hard-days-night-john-1a-hard-days-night-john-6

Super news.  Formats can be very annoying, but I guess that is the ‘march of technology’.  My next CD / bluray / whatever player has to be able to play about 7 different formats of discs with all sorts of regional coding on them.

So, as I asked over at Impossible to Derail, I recently discovered iTunes can rip at 320kbps, which I’d previously thought to be at a max of 192kbps. Is it worth reripping my CDs? If so, is it worth reripping all of them or just my favorites? Thanks

A google search brings up the frequent comment of try out a test on a song you know very well and see if you can hear a difference as altho there is one its dependent on the listeners hearing, the quality of the song you are listening to and the quality of the equipment you are playing it on.

As for re-ripping if you do so start with your favourites and then work your way thru – that way you will be able to appreciate the tracks you like more right from the beginning.
