This is a question I’ve been pondering for a while, and I’d like to hear the views of you all on it.
Can bad people make good music?
There are several musicians whose work I love who have done or said questionable/ downright wrong things. An example is Morrissey, who is my favourite singer yet has said abhorrent things like “you can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies”.
I usually try to defend them, but feel hypocritical as what they’ve done/said is often just as bad as the stuff I slam people like Trump and Weinstein for.
More examples are John’s treatment of Cynthia, and in the more extreme cases people like Ian Watkins and Charles Manson.
What do you think? Can you still listen to and enjoy musicians who’ve wronged in your eyes? How bad does their wrongdoing have to be for you to stop listening to them?
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yes, bad people can make good music. But you need to separate the artist from the artwork at that point.
Personally i Love Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll Part 2” Even though Glitter did very terrible things to children while he was famous and while he was on the run.

Only if you don’t let their actions and or beliefs get in the way. I like You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling although Phil killed someone, I like Johnny B. Goode although Chuck committed armed robbery and filmed girls in his restaurant’s bathroom, and I like Black Sabbath even though Ozzy has done a slew of crazy things from pissing on a statue near the Alamo to biting the head off a bat even trying to kill his wife. Don’t let someone’s wrongdoings get in your way of enjoying their music. This can even extend outside of the music industry, I eat Subway although Jared is one messed up individual and I watch The Loud House although Chris Savino got fired for sexual harassment.

I’ve long ago resigned myself to the fact that many musicians, ones I revere, frequently did terrible things, particularly to women. (Hendrix, John Bonham, Miles Davis, James Brown, John Lennon , etc.)

Considering Dennis Wilson moved to Canada for two weeks to escape Manson, its safe to assume they weren’t very fond of him. It was for only a breif period that they associated with him, and producer Terry Melcher, a close friend of Dennis’s and prominent record exacutive, denied Manson a contract on the basis that his music was not good.
Later on Sharon Tate felt the wrath of Tex Watson and Charles Manson inside of Terry Melcher’s former home.

Oh, definitely… haven’t you heard of selling one’s soul to the devil for musical prowess? They all did it, y’know.
Jokes aside, I agree with all that’s been said above. I revere Jimmy Page as a guitarist; as a person, I definitely wouldn’t say he’s a role model Same goes for a few others. It’s twice as nice when you can respect your favourite musicians personally as well as musically (David Gilmour comes to mind for me — sure, he’s made mistakes, but overall he seems a very decent human being), but it’s not necessary.

If they all soul their souls, they’d all have shorter life expediencies which isn’t the case.
