Well, do you want to lay down a very basic track with your softsynth so we can overdub some stuff onto it, @ewe2? It would be good to get a BPM, and an idea about the form, so we can all start work on it.

Yes, sorry this is taking a bit long but I ran into some technical issues with my setup that is preventing me from recording directly from my guitar amp through the usb interface, so i need more gear to do that, and on top of that I had other RL issues that stopped me from doing anything at all for a week or so. But I’m going with 140bpm and I roughed up some stuff but I want to re-record it this weekend using my old method so we have something to go on. It’s a little bit interesting because I’m still figuring out some chords that will differ from the original (it’s more about how I can hear some harmonising with the lead vocal), so what I’ll have is going to be a guide only.
During this “hiatus” I’ve been thinking too about how we might proceed. Once I get an example going, I’m wondering if you guys would try taking it from the start each and building a few tracks on top of it according to what you like and then we can compare what we each bring to it and figure out a central version from that. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a bunch of instruments just a few different things you can do at a time will be great, it’s about generating ideas and also me taking a step back because I feel I might be guiding things a bit too far just because I can do it, and that’s not really the point here. Hopefully you can get where I’m coming from with whatever I come up with. Remember: we don’t have to follow the original chord sequence or really copy the breaks etc if we don’t want to. This is something that reggae dub in particular does really well, it can get quite original.
Again, sorry for the wait, lately I feel like I’ve been swimming through treacle and it’s been just as frustrating for me.

I hope everything’s ok with your gear. Oh, and with RL too.
Reading what you said about building tracks, I had a really zany thought: what about a brass section/whatever like that we can muster? Would that be a feasible idea (can anyone play a brass intrument/saxophone, and has access to one?), or should we take that idea, and change it (a myriad of pianos playing the same thing, to create a nice stereo effect)?
We also need lots of percussion!!

As far as I know, @The Hole Got Fixed, it’ll just be you and @Martha with brass. I would be happy to add a thousand guitars, though (something I’ve often thought of is layering guitars with different effects), but things like brass and strings are generally cooler layered than guitars.

Agreed.
I’m not going to be terribly useful for a brass section – a French horn doesn’t really fit that well. I could see if I can play trumpet? I’ve never played it before, and I don’t know if I’d have access to one, but I’d be happy to give it a shot!

I’d be just as happy with trombone, that’s a popular reggae/ska brass instrument. Not sure that reggae kazoo is an acceptable replacement

edit: I’ve been listening to vaporwave on youtube this morning so I think a vaporwave dub remix is definitely on the cards.

Anything but vaporwave!!! I’m happy to have a kazoo/french horn/trumpet section (or something like that), but anything but vaporwave!!!

OK I knuckled down somewhat…

This has a few tracks so I compressed the project. As before, it’s a GUIDE, not set in stone but I do have a preference for the chord sequence:
The verses, instead of straight E majors are Em/A/E with the G to A in the usual place.
The choruses, instead of a straight E major to A major is an A/G/E progression.
We do the solo section and final recap of the verse as usual, but we repeat the chorus ad lib until we want to stop, so don’t take the current length as solid either.
Don’t forget we can transpose all that to another key if it’s preferred!
This features various guitar bits with a botched solo, a forgetful vocal guide, good bass, and a jumped-up kazoo brass section that could do with a harmony to make it worserer
The one thing I didn’t muck about with yet is the drumming, I expect to redo half of this anyway. The drumming is interesting because we have that choice as I said before of a stronger 4/4 kick-based feel or the looser 3rd-beat kick feel depending on what you think. Over to you all…

I might be able to do the “I’VE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS” for the end, @ewe2.
Though, there’s only one thing, and that is that none of the audio that you just posted as a guide is working.

Can you play ogg files? If not, you might need to install a codec to do that. Audacity uses ogg for compressing projects because it’s not encumbered by patent law like mp3s. I believe there’s a windows media codec to play them, you may need another to create them.

Sounds really, really good! The lyrics gave me a good chuckle
Honestly, I think the looser, 3rd beat kick pattern would be better for the drums, but that’s just me
Do we want the start to be exactly like the original (screaming vocals, insistent snare, even louder guitar) or will we pare it back a bit?
Regardless, I think we’re onto a great idea here. Shall we delegate some tasks now?

Can we have both? I have ulterior motives… well not so much ulterior. I want us to move from the model we used where I determined the structure to where we each have multitrack input and can try things out with what we have like real musicians having a jam. I realize this may not suit everyone and if you just want to base what you have on what’s there now that’s ok, but you might have to redo it if it changes. For instance: at the point where I end the song, we could tack on a breakdown and some kind of dubby freakout at the end. Or not! And I would like to compare both drumming styles to see whether either is best or perhaps a mix and also have some tracks for a full-on dub remix later. I plan to fish out the synth and try to make spacey dub noises with it, and I might find a usable organy sound or something.

I like the idea of faking out the standard beginning and launching into a smooth reggae feel, yeah. I’m using bridge pickup with overdrive distortion to rough it up and it sounds fine when playing chops, which usually isn’t what you’re supposed to do in reggae! The recap of the beginning can be a mini-breakdown with the guitar and vox doing the same thing but maybe the drums can hit a standard 4/4 while the bass does a reggae drop similar to what’s there Now And Then back into whatever reggae feel we go with.
Edit: as for delegation, I wanna see what people think and come up with. Note for @Beatlebug I put on some delay/reverb and warbly phaser for the “lead” (as in sunk) guitar just for you! I have my new fuzz pedal now but it’s a little scary for reggae

If I get a chance, I’ll see it I can record both versions of the drum patterns. It may be that if we want a second ending tacked on that we might have to copy and paste from what has already been recorded, potentially.
And I’ll also try to record some vocals, but no guarantees you’ll ever hear them – they may turn out awfully.
Another idea: ukelele in the 2nd intro half way through?
And off-beat tambourine throughout. Does anyone have a tambourine?

^^I believe so. It’s very hectic, isn’t it?
I got some stuff done today: https://drive.google.com/drive…..sp=sharing (Let me know if the link doesn’t work)
Do what you want with the vocals. Keep the first section, keep it all, or file it in the bin – whatever’s best!
As for the drums – both patterns suit the song, but “drums 2” (the kick on 1+3) freed up my fills, so I think I’d err towards that pattern.

Yeah, I could fiddle some more without really changing it. I really like the drums and vocals (all of them), they’re the bits I worry about most.

@The Hole Got Fixed I went with the 2nd drum track but I want you to try again, this time maybe soloing the guitar chop and lead tracks together with the 140-time to keep you in line, I had to do some editing there! And what I meant by a busier track is more like kick-kick-rim/snare rest k-k-snare on each bar. We can cheat by using the time track for hi-hats if you want! And we can always edit fills later, I wouldn’t worry about those too much, either keep it very simple or avoid for now. TBH I think drums are quite hard to do well in reggae, because errors really stand out (cf my guitar skills!).
The vocals were hilarious, I put you on the left and me on the right and we sound like a couple of drunk football fans at the pub But its early days!
