This is nice – A new re-recording of Add Some Music To Your Day made for charity featuring Mike, Al, Bruce and David Marks as well as their musical family and friends under the name California Music. Shame Brian wasn’t involved here but as one of the commenters says below, “he is in the song” for sure!

Now, if only we could get a 60th reunion tour in 2022!

what’s everyone’s thoughts on Love You?

the project I’m working on is gonna be very analog synth heavy, so I’ve been listening to this one a bit for arrangement ideas

but man, is it ever an odd album

Love You is definitely one you can put on and not really hear anything to grab your attention. Very nice album but kind of just goes on ordinarily with one pretty good song after another. The synth work on L.A Light Album is great particularly Dennis’ Love Surrounds me is really cool.

I happened to be looking back through Mike Love’s book “Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy,” to see if my visceral hatred has ebbed.

Nope, not a single bit of softening to it.

From all of Love’s constant historical revisionism to try and portray himself as an equal with Brian Wilson, his constant petty and snide comments about the other members of the band and Brian’s current wife Melinda, his incessant whining that “I’m not a bad guy, really!” and that he doesn’t deserve his reputation of infamy, but most of all, his unparalleled hatred and jealousy of Brian’s music and the fact that he became considered the genius behind the group, it’s far too much to take, and truly vile and loathsome.

Not to mention there are many things Love conveniently leaves out of his narrative, especially regarding his history with ex-wives and children, several of his many lawsuits against Brian (including the one where he sued over Brian’s completed solo version of SMiLE in 2004, suing him over an album and material that he despised because it wasn’t following the old tired threads of “fun, summer, surf and cars” of the past), and so on. All this with his constant assertions that “I wrote this part, I deserve credit for it.” Say what you will about Paul and the Barry Miles book, at least Paul has persuasive evidence to back it up. Not to mention the way Love takes Paul’s politeness as a sign of being a friend, then in that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech we’ve cringed at many times, takes a steaming dump over his supposed friend, as well as The Beatles as a whole, and The Stones. Class of 1988 was already awkward as hell with Paul’s no show, Ringo being clearly drunk, George holding it all together, and Yoko throwing clear shade by saying “John would’ve been here, he would’ve come.” And then Mike Love makes it worse and insults everyone.

It’s no wonder that Mike Love is considered the villain of The Beach Boys ‘ story; not the Wilsons’ abusive father/manager Murry, not Brian’s manipulative and sleazy therapist Eugene Landy, not even Charles Manson. I dare say he is without a doubt, the a*****e of rock and roll, with Ritchie Blackmore a very close second, just in terms of actual rock stars; if you put him in with people involved in the industry as a whole, including figures like Allen Klein, Phil Spector, Landy, Metallica’s therapist Phil Towle, and so forth; Love still winds hands down!

How is it that someone who studied meditation of the Maharishi with The Beatles could come out of that experience and use it in his everyday life, and become MORE of an a*****e?

I feel that, if anything, The Beach Boys would’ve truly continued to grow, evolve and remain in the running in terms of active relevance and hitmaking, even with Brian’s condition, if the band had just found someone better than Mike Love to be the frontman. At some point, during the Pet Sounds/SMiLE sessions, Dennis, Carl and Al Jardine should’ve sacked him, if only just for how much he was trashing Brian, even if they couldn’t truly help Brian or know what was happening to him.

Never seen Mike Love’s speech but have heard and read often that’s he’s a tosser. How on earth can the “Mop Tops” play 180 shows when John is dead? Julian looks uncomfortable at that point, i’d be pissed off at such a stupid and insensitive comment.

He’s going on about harmony yet slags people off. Moron.

Heres all you need to know

Absolutely tarnishing the name and music of the Beach Boys , (and yes that is the Sugar Ray guy and John Stamos)

Practically the only significant American band that would play events for Trump.

But this is the Beach Boys appreciation thread so I’ll share some of Brian’s newest work, modest piano arrangements of some of the all time great songs.

All that video reminds me of is John saying he didn’t want to be 40 singing ‘She Loves You ‘ (and I’m aware Paul and Ringo are performing Beatles tracks when playing live).

After that comes Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor killing the band’s legacy (but they sell lots of tickets, albums etc  everyone can sing at least the same 17 songs that only ever appear). It’s all good as long as ‘Killer Queen’ is being used to sell Domestos toilet cleaner.

Well, in my opinion, Brian and Roger have done quite well by Queen, their fans, and Freddie’s legacy. After all, the reason the touring configurations are called “Queen + Paul Rodgers” and “Queen + Adam Lambert” represent that this is separate from Queen, that they are playing the music but not replacing Freddie, because Freddie can’t be replaced. And they’ve said this many times, “we could never find someone to fill Freddie’s shoes, this is just us going out because we love to play and the fans want to hear the songs.”

(Also, of note, Brian and Roger were only executive music producers on the BoRhap film, they had no input in how the script was done, no real power to effect significant change, and signed away the rights to their story, so they have never received a penny from the film; their only job and focus was ensuring that the music was served well and that the portrayal of Freddie was up to scratch, and so as long as those happened, they were quite happy to roll with standard Hollywood rewrites.)

I’m generally agnostic and of taking no loyalty regarding whether bands that continue on without certain key members are valid or not, I generally don’t get into those thorny and heated flame war debates.

However, I do draw the line at what Mike Love has done to the group under The Beach Boys ‘ name, and how he has completely simplified and reduced the group to “fun and sun lifestyle songs”, when that image became horribly outdated decades ago. To truly become “America’s band”, The Beach Boys needed to make songs about all kinds of stories, all kinds of characters, all kinds of musical arrangements. In short, not to run from what Brian Wilson was doing with the music, but to expand further and basically have it keep growing and growing, to eventually making a “SMiLE on steroids”, so to speak. Now, did every song and album have to be as complex as that? Of course not, but the lyrics and ideas had to keep growing, and Brian needed encouragement to continue, in addition to just having someone there to support him, or just give him a hug so he wouldn’t feel so alone. Pandering to the lowest common denominator, as Love has done, is short-term gain to completely sell out the future and kill the validity of the band.

And moreover, simply put, The Beach Boys have always been and always will be Brian, Dennis and Carl. To be a true representation of the group that can be accepted as such, a version under the name doesn’t necessarily need every surviving original member, but it definitely needs Brian to be real. And it simply isn’t.

Not a Queen fan but I see their current outfits similar to the Dead. You’ll never convince die hard fans to buy tickets or not, depending on how much they worship Jerry Garcia or Freddie Mercury. Some will buy tickets and cheer loudly because it still means so much. I can’t respect what the current Beach Boys do.

Brian is still alive, and after all of his struggles, many of which Mike is directly involved with (some would say he’s in some way responsible for) Mike is still holding onto dear life the beautiful music that Brian was essential writing in his sleep during the early sixties. But you can’t tell the story of the band without the many points where they unoriginally rehash the Surfin Safari days for a cash grab. Brian is above it (or below it depending on when you’re talking about) but it breaks my heart how badly he got screwed.

Paul has been quoted several times saying he wants to play Beatles tunes so that people get their moneys worth and are able to see their favorite songs while they have a chance to see a living legend. It was I believe a Little Richard concert Paul left disappointed because LR was working out new material instead of playing the hits.

I imagine if John were alive he would revel in selling out stadiums and experimenting to the highest degree, knowing most of the audience that payed good money to hear Imagine is going to walk away salty. a-hard-days-night-john-3

Yes, it is an absolute travesty that Brian was screwed over so many times in his life, but the times by Mike Love are the worst and most heartbreaking. Both because Love was belittling and attacking Brian’s incredible gift and the music that should’ve enabled The Beach Boys to continue to evolve and grow and still be part of the cultural zeitgeist, and because of the fact that he has never taken the time to understand how Brian works and thinks, or what he has struggled with, especially as he melted down and became a prisoner of his mind. I mean, Dennis and Carl had no idea what Brian was suffering from either and couldn’t really help him, but they always demonstrated how much they loved him and cared for his well-being.

Brian has indeed moved on from the Surfin’ Safari days, quite thoroughly, and the band should’ve as well, because it would’ve enabled them to actually, truly stand on par with The Beatles and be remembered just as fondly, especially in terms of innovation and evolution, and their upcoming 60th anniversary would be a milestone in ways other than sheer longevity, but of expansion and actual active relevance alongside today’s pop stars. But Love took Brian’s retreat as a sign to turn the band into his image, his desires, and nostalgia was to carry the day above all else. There’s definitely good stuff in those albums, other than Summer In Paradise, but you can’t truly say they’re on par with what Brian conjured in the ’60s or what Brian has managed to do in his career renaissance on his own, especially after he was freed from Landy.

I don’t know why Love was allowed to get away with it, or, to be perfectly frank, remain in the group at all. Virtually anyone else would’ve kicked him to the curb, and specifically said, “Brian has found our future, you’re remaining in the past, you’re a lead weight that will drag us down.” They should’ve either shackled Love from making any creative decisions, kicked him out and found a replacement, or kicked him out and have Carl and Dennis become the leaders.
