Does Dennis sing “In The Back Of My Mind”? That song is just earth shattering. Well, the entirety of The Beach Boys Today! really, just a freakin masterpiece album.

Yes Dennis sings that song, but Brian wrote it. Just like every song on Today! In The Back Of My Mind has a stunning melody atop another beautiful Brian Wilson arrangement. The album is perfection.

I went to see a live broadcast of Young Marx tonight, which was absolutely brilliant, but halfway through I got God Only Knows in my head and couldn’t concentrate on the play because that melody is so ridiculously perfect.

Have been listening to this one over and over again recently:
IMO If anything, THIS is The Beach Boys ‘s 80s hit they should have been remembered for. I think it’s better than Kokomo.

I don’t know… I love Kokomo. Maybe I Don’t Know is probably my favorite on that album, but I feel as a whole work it often gets grouped the dreary “keepin the summer alive” and “still cruisin” from the 80s.

Off of the underrated L.A (Light Album). Dennis contributes Live Surrounds Me, one of his best songs imo. Lady Lynda is great too. I kind if discovered it by accident last year and I wasn’t surprised to discover it was Al again stepping up and writing a great song.
Edit: i went to play Lady Lynda, and relized I forgot to shout out the opener of L.A that comes just before Lady Lynda: one Brian’s late career masterworks, Good Timin. Such a great song.

I’ve been delving into the Friends album more recently, and I can say it’s now my favourite Beach Boys album. I admire how album encourages friendship and love, as well as exploring nature and recommending the listener to try out TM (something I would like to do in the future). It’s a shame Brian wasn’t as heavily involved here as he was with the previous albums, plus I also think Dennis’s Celebrate The News (the b-side to Breakaway) would have been perfect on this album had it been written at the time. Anyways, here’s my three favourite tracks from the album:

Friends is so great. Such great contributions from all members. One of my favorites, Little Bird was written by Dennis, but the sweeping bridge section “wheres my little bird? She must have flown away.” Was written by Brian one day while they were both at the piano.
Takes it back to the old days when they would gather around Brian at the piano and work out their songs.

Something cool I just bought at my record shop I thought I’d share – this unusual repackaging of The Beach Boys Today! album, called Dance, Dance, Dance:
Yes, the album really does come out on the left for some reason. Here’s the back:
I’m not too sure when this was released either, as my copy doesn’t have any dates on it. I assumed 1969 or 1970 at first because the album cover is an alternate picture from 20/20, but going on Discogs shows two different versions of Dance, Dance, Dance – a cassette version from 1976 and another copy of the L.P. from 1983.

Was helping my sister set up a turntable in Brisbane last week and her ancient stack of LPs was a trip down memory lane.
Included the L. A. album from the Boys and a nice copy of Venus & Mars, including the poster I had totally forgotten about. The ‘postcards’ on the Beach Boys album look so much better at LP size.

Well, this was just announced:
The version of Fun, Fun, Fun from this album is already available to listen to:
https://ume.lnk.to/BeachBoysOrchestralYD
I’m kind of 50/50 about this release. Sure, It’s a nice idea (I’m quite curious to hear what they’ve done to Sloop John B and Don’t Worry Baby), Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce have praised the album on The Beach Boys website, and it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios so it may be a pleasant surprise!
On the other hand, as for new Beach Boys releases, I’m more eager for something to do with the 50th anniversary of the Friends album being released than this, but hey, that might come out later this year. I think I may be more excited for this release also had it consisted of orchestral improvements to some more overlooked tracks (e.g. Just Once In My Life , California Feelin’, Aren’t You Glad) as well as the hits and better known songs.
Feel free to share your thoughts!

I absolutely adored the 50th anniversary releases for Pet Sounds, Smile, and the 67 sessions and live performances. I hope that they can give us something awesome for Friends.

Listened to a couple of the tracks from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra album on Spotify today, and wow! It’s a lot better than I thought it would be at first. The orchestral backing on four particular tracks – Darlin’, Don’t Worry Baby, You Still Believe In Me, and The Warmth of The Sun are too beautiful for words. Good Vibrations, Fun, Fun, Fun and Here Today were pretty mediocre IMO, but Kokomo… just no. The orchestral backing does nothing for me on it, it still sounds like the 80s cheeseball we know and hate.

Guilty pleasure time:
Yes. I actually kinda like a solo Mike Love song… IMO It’s a pretty decent and catchy melody, but what brings it down is the god awful lyrics, especially that “Good Vibrations, assassinations” pairing. Maybe with a bit of rearranging, scrapping all the references to other songs and making the words perhaps about a couple looking back at their relationship or something, it could probably work.
Anyways, it certainly kicks the 2017 Do It Again remake up the butt.
