I’m in agreement there @Toxic34 about Mike Love being a villain, a bad guy, etc (my friends have heard me hurl much worse at Mike Love’s name), but I can’t agree that Mike’s treatment of Brian was the worst. I’ll spare the details here, I assume you know them, those of you who don’t have to believe me when I say Murry Wilson and Eugene Landy’s treatment of Brian was worse. The movie Love and Mercy is one of the most accurate biopics ever made, and Paul Giamattis performance is bone chilling.
I’ve done my own reading and research outside of the movie of course, but that’s just part of the tragedy of Brian’s life. As bad as Mike was, Murry and Landy actually abused and neglected him to the point of permanent physical and psychological damage, as well as financial exploitation. So so horrible, and so many of us were robbed of so much beautiful music.

I would certainly argue Brian was definitely treated worse by Murry and Landy, but a lot of fans of the group hold Mike Love with more venom than either of these two, because of the fact that, ironically, despite his own words of admonishment, he “f****d with the formula,” in this case, the formula that was truly essential to their success, which was to get bigger in scope and ambition, and write all kinds of interesting stuff away from writing the same tired cliches over and over. In many ways, Love ended up doing the very same he railed against, because he had the situation completely backwards. And in that way, sidelined Brian more than Murry or Landy in terms of the music. At least, that’s how this way of thinking goes.
Also, @sir walter raleigh, is this also you, on this Disney forum here? https://forums.wdwmagic.com/me…..gh.121290/
If so, I’m actually on that forum too, under Mmoore29, because I couldn’t register as Toxic34 there. And I have to admit, I personally found this sir walter raleigh’s comments against Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm quite appalling, in my view. I’m not quite a Disney apologist that will pretend everything they’ve done is amazing, but they’ve done far more good than bad, and continue to do so. So I don’t see the problem in having Disney distribute the Jackson documentary; if anything we’d be getting the same thing if UMG released it themselves.

I don’t consider either version of Smile to be the definitive, finished one
Smile was always supposed to be a single 35-40 minute album and the tracklisting both releases use was designed as a setlist for live performances, iirc
I just got the Feel Flows 4LP box a few days ago
they left a LOT of gems on the cutting room floor

SMiLE was intended to be a three movement symphony, and Brian’s 2006 version is for all intents and purposes complete. The melodic variations in Good Vibrations are established throughout the earlier movements. That’s where Brian got caught up and was unable to fit all of the pieces together in the middle. There are tons of different track lists combined from different takes, and in my opinion the 67 sessions and outtakes have the superior sound. There was something magical happening in the studio and I can’t get enough of it.

I prefer “Smiley Smile” over any Smile release out there.
have you heard Smile: Millennium Edition? worth looking into if you haven’t heard it, really creative interpretation of Smile that also incorporates some of the Smiley Smile stuff
I’m also a fan of that album, really like the simultaneously playful and disturbing atmosphere that album has
really liking this song from the box I mentioned in my last post

No i haven’t yet. But as you suggested i did a quick search in youtube and listened to “Surf’s up” and liked it, so i’ll definitely check it out

Yeah. I like the lo-fi quality it has, that it was recorded with minimal instrumentation and the overall DIY spirit.

I’ll find late 60s 70s Beach Boys albums to listen to almost routinely every week once in a while because that’s the the wave I’m riding. Friends is my favorite of the post SMiLE era but 20/20, Sunflower, Wild Honey all make the rounds very consistently. Every so often Surfs Up and Smiley Smile come around but to be honest the non Brian tracks aren’t quite as strong as the other albums and I’ll typically just go with SMiLE when I want some straight up masterpieces.
