So, my son was waiting for someone to swing by and pick him up to go to a party. They were an hour late so I rang and they told me “I’ll be there soon”.
How long does that mean to everyone?
They took another 50 minutes.

To me it means stick on the kettle, turn the tv on and get comfy as they are going to be a while.
Shouldn’t this be in ‘impossible to derail’?

I didn’t want to derail it
[EDIT] Actually I think that thread is not ideal for a (semi) focussed discussion on a particular topic as it moves so fast, plus people who are not on at the time may miss a discussion or find it hard to follow. Happy to take opinions on that though (and maybe derail this one ha ha).

“Soon” is a relative term. Ever since the calendar turned to 1 January, I’ve been saying “soon it will be baseball season”. The first game is on 5 April.
Whenever someone says “I’ll be there soon”, my first question is “how many minutes are there in a soon?”.

I think if somebody calls to tell you they’ll be there soon, they mean “within the hour” if they’re flying into town; and “within 20 minutes” if they’re just coming from within the town.

“Soon” can be anywhere from five minutes to ninety. It depends on the person. If the person in question has a track record of lateness, then take MMM’s advice: put the kettle on and get comfy.

“Soon” is however long it takes for a beautiful woman to be satisfied with her preparation for an evening out. I’ve seen “Soon” take an entire day. Not bitter in any way though

“Soon” depends on the context. Like if it’s “I’ll go back to doing homework soon,” then it’s like three hours. But if it’s “I’ll be at your house soon,” then it’s like 5-10 minutes.

Thanks for the input all – some pretty interesting variation with a pretty mean (no pun intended) standard deviation.
Of course, the ‘someone’ was my STBE*

@Zig, your post made me remember that I’d been telling everyone, “George Harrison ‘s birthday is coming (soon)” since January. So in that case, “soon” was about a month.
Whenever someone says “I’ll be there soon”, my first question is “how many minutes are there in a soon?”.
Sounds Lennonesque!

When I get home, and my mom is at my grandma’s, she’ll always app me saying she’ll be home soon. Soon is the same kind of thing for her as ”I’ll be gone for about half an hour”.
So if she’ll say either of those two, I know she’ll be gone for at least another 2 hours.
