Great to have an American Football thread. I really don’t understand why we call it football though. There is a “kicking game” element to it – an important one, but it’s a small part at that. We mostly run with the ball or throw it. Still, the strategy (deceptions, matchups, exploiting weaknesses, etc…) behind the game excites me to no end. To me, Football is the only good thing about Winter. It’s something I can watch until it’s Baseball season again!

During a football game at my high school, our quarterback wasn’t doing a very good job. One of my friends jokingly said, “I wish he would break his leg so we can put the backup quarterback in.” He got his leg broke not too many plays after she said that. She felt terrible. I’ve been to a pro baseball game, but I haven’t been to a pro football game. I would have to find one that isn’t too cold.
What is the status of the safety measures teams and/or leagues are putting into place for the players? Is that mainly in college sports or is that extending into the pros too?

The only football game I ever went to was in Georgia, so I couldn’t tell you about cold football games…

Within the last 10 years or so, there have been many rule changes designed to cut down on injuries. The sad part, to me, is that these rules would not be necessary if the game was played the right way. The disturbing trend among defenders is to try to knock the snot out of the offensive player in an effort to get him to drop the ball. Tackling is a lost art. I know this sounds like a “back in my day” speech and I don’t care. In years past, a defense could stop an offense more effectively by tackling the ball carrier and stopping him from advancing any further. Players like Joe Greene, Dick Butkus, Alan Page, etc… were proof positive of this. Now, with emphasis being placed on the violent hitting (launching oneself like a missile head first into the ball carrier), injuries are more prevalent on both sides of the line of scrimmage and at times are career-ending. The average pro football player’s “career” is only four years – chew on that one. What these neanderthal defenders and their coaches who teach this are failing to recognize is ball carriers are also getting bigger and stronger. That means that the offensive player more often bounces off of the hit and keeps running forward when a good old fashioned form tackle would have stopped him. I hope, sooner or later, they realize this.

Thanks, Zig. I remember hearing a story about “smart” helmets that track the number and intensity of impacts. Someone pays attention to the data and pulls players out when they have had too much trauma. I think that was at the college level.
You’d think the players would protest the type of defense tactics you describe.

We’re about to have a full-on rumble up in here.
I think to really understand why we call it football, you have to go back… waaaay back, before the advent of the forward pass, before the existence of the NFL itself. America’s football (which I’m okay with) evolved when American colleges began playing Rugby and then modified the game. Earliest versions required a lot of kicking (drop kicks). The name just… stuck. By the way, the um… “universal” name for American football is “Gridiron.” Go figure.

Count me in as another Chicago Bears fan. This is largely because I was born in, raised in, and currently live in the Chicagoland area.
I also somewhat support the New England Patriots, because one of my high school classmates (Jimmy Garoppolo) plays for the Patriots.

So, we have fans of teams in the same division – Chicago, Green Bay and Minnesota. Anyone hear from Detroit?
I’m hoping for good things out of Minneapolis this year. Teddy Bridgewater showed some promise in his rookie year and should only improve this year. Also, the return of Adrian Peterson and a strong draft on the defensive side are fueling my optimism. No matter what, it’s going to be tough overtaking the Packers at the top of the division. If Rodgers stays healthy, it’s hard to bet against him.
@Necko – if Tom Brady’s suspension is upheld, Garoppolo will definitely see his share of playing time. I’ve heard great things about him and will look forward to seeing what he can do at this level.
Most training camps begin next week. Football is coming…

As a little girl in the ’70’s, for some reason that I don’t recall, I liked the Pittsburg Steelers.
I’m more into college football than the pros.

Sounds good to me. I am a BIG Packers fan – we had one of their assistant coaches on an exchange with one of our rugby coaches when I was in Years 11 and 12 at school and we played a lot of American Football in our sports periods – lots of fun. I have followed them through their ups and downs and ups since then and have a collection of their hats that friends have brought back from various US holidays.

If you did, it would surely have to be over something other than the fine team he supports? 🙂

Not surprising, AG – being a perennial 70’s powerhouse, they were on TV more than most. This was before cable/dish/internet – if you were lucky, you had the luxury of two games to watch on any given Sunday.
