Oh. I knew it was Aries season sometime — close enough a-hard-days-night-john-6

I’m certainly one to talk, anyway, as it took me about seven months to spend my Christmas money from last year. paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif

On another note, I got Hail To The Thief by Radiohead in my stocking this morning. ahdn_john_08_gif (Not my favorite of theirs, but I can’t complain and I’m sure I’ll convince myself to like it now that I have the CD. a-hard-days-night-john-6)

Hail to the Thief is one I should probably devote more of my attention to. It seems to strike a weird midpoint between the Kid A/Amnesiac experimentalism and the super slick warmth of In Rainbows, which is probably my favourite.

In Rainbows is absolutely my favorite. Largely for sentimental reasons as my dad got it when it came out and it was my only exposure to Radiohead for over ten years, but it’s also genuinely a really beautifully crafted piece of work and has so many of my favorite RH songs. Nude, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Faust Arp, possibly my all-time favorite Reckoner, and my #2 funeral song Videotape… a-hard-days-night-paul-7heart

Faust Arp is gorgeous. It’s like Blackbird got taken apart and reassembled.

I’ll admit I haven’t heard the album in over a year, maybe it’s time to play it again. It’s my favourite of theirs along with Kid A, I think.

I just got my first turntable for Christmas with All Things Must Pass , Rubber Soul , Abbey Road , Hey Jude (the compilation album/The Beatles Again), and the soundtrack to It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (one of my favorite soundtracks by Vince Guaraldi, who is one of my favorite jazz pianists).

ahdn_paul_06Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack is a Christmastime staple in the Beatlebug household. He’s also a great inspiration to my favorite pianist, George Winston. apple01

Well, I’d heard music from it before, obviously, but never whilst conscious what I was listening to. Playing it on Spotify was one of those amazing moments of “ooohhhhhhhhh” when the connection between the name and the music clicks a-hard-days-night-john-6

Which ones are you planning to get? I got my copy of Mount Eerie from his pwelverumandson store and it’s great; comes with an awesome poster. I think I’m going to get The Glow, Pt 2 next once my student loan comes in.

Those are definitely in my wish list. I think i’ll start with his early Microphones stuff (Don’t wake me up, Window,…) and jumping between both projects with no logical order just as i feel i want to listen to whatever whenever…i’ve been listening a lot to his latest releases, specially “A crow looked at me” and “Now only”… i got really impressed by those. Raw, sad and real. I was impressed by his courage to sing about that experience. How he turned it into poetry and art.

Agreed, those albums were stunning, and so powerful. I think for me I’ll try and complete the classic Microphones trilogy by getting Glow and It Was Hot but after that I think I’ll delve into buying his later stuff. His website is doing a deal on Lost Wisdom and Lost Wisdom Pt 2 so I might tick those both off together. I also got Now Only at a record store in Manchester so I might try and get Crow since it would make sense to have both of them.

Bought a twofer CD of a coupla early ’60s Roland Kirk dates (before he was Rahsaan), “Domino” and “Reeds and Deeds”.

Never heard either before, and I don’t know recording dates yet – probably Hamburg-era – but I’m pleased to discover that the pianist is Andrew Hill, who showed up here last page: One post from me at the very beginning of the month, one at the very end of the year. Happy 2020, everyone! apple01
