I’m a big fan of Benjamin Franklin………It was, I admit easier in those days to be a ‘polymath’……….For instance you could put all our mathematical knowledge into about 80 books in 1900……today it would fill 100,000……….So going back to Franklin’s time it would have been even more doable to have a firm understanding or mastery in many areas…….But Politician, Scientist, Inventor, Postmaster……Diplomat…Artist……etc you see what I mean …..
He was also a member of the Hell-Fire Club….and author of the book I’m currently reading which confirms his status in my eyes……”Fart Proudly” It owes a lot to Swift and Diogenes……and pickled onions.

Anybody who writes an essay on farting is a hero in my book!
“Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to look back on even this”; Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 1, line 203, where Aeneas says this to his men after the shipwreck that put them on the shores of Africa)

I read a little about Ben Franklin after your post, Atlas. I didn’t know this bit of info: “For what it’s worth, he never formally married his partner of 44 years, Deborah Read, …”
Now I’m going to try the things listed on this page http://aplus.com/a/21-tricks-with-google
EDIT: and another page http://googletricks.com/top-25…..le-tricks/ I am entertained!

I doubt she wanted to……… He was quite the ladies man old Ben’
Fond of the ‘satin bottoms’ at the Hell-fire club I understand.
If you’re into that period of history….Look up ‘John Wilkes’ too. Another flawed hero and like Franklin a Hell-fire club member. He’d joined to get connected and make influential friends but couldn’t resist a joke at other people’s expense.
Some Governor of sorts to India sent the club a baboon……Wilkes purloined it kept it secret and had it fitted in a tailor-made red devil’s costume….and concealed in a spring loaded trunk near the black mass altar in the caves.
When the other members cavorted around cursing God and daring the devil to appear he pulled a string hidden under the carpet and released the Devil suited baboon who jumped howling onto Lord Sandwich’s back and clung round his neck…..The gibbering Lord shouted how he loved God and hadn’t done all the bad things he’d boasted of and was quite a jolly fellow really…..” Take some of these other chaps they are much worse than me”……..When word went to the ladies present that the devil had appeared they all ran around screaming their heads off and it was a right old Kafuffle ……..
……..Until a couple of the members who had stood back understood the reality of what was happening and made efforts to calm things down.
A workman gave Wilkes away and it turned nasty for him……..Lords don’t like being made fools of. Wilkes had made powerful enemies who were out to get him.
Because of another issue Wilkes was famously attacked in Parliament…… Lord Sandwich at the end of his verbal assault said that Wilkes would, “either die with a noose around his head or of the pox”
Wilkes bowed respectfully and replied……’That will depend on whether I embrace the Honorable lord’s principles, or his mistress’
Anyway I’ll claim this as personal fact no 6…….I go off on tangents a lot.

5. I love discovering stupid stuff……..Like what happens if you search for ‘askew’ on google………And that ‘gullible’ although a common word doesn’t appear in any dictionary.
Nice try on the gullible 🙂
