Following on from the discussion about pies, I thought I’d just put this nitpick out there about tarts/pies/cakes: In Dutch, (and I’m sure countless other languages), they don’t have a word that discerns between them all. Pies, cakes and tarts are all ‘taarten’, so here’s an argument settler: taarten are great. Regardless of what sort

Cake > pies in general but it does depend on flavor.
I’ll take chocolate cake over apple pie any day but if you have coffee cake up against blackberry pie or lemon merengue pie? That’s a whole different story.
Have you ever had CHOCOLATE PIE tho

^It’s more akin to a casserole, or even a cobbler if we’re going with dessert parallels. But it’s so delicious-looking I give it a linguistic pass.

Cottage pie originally was made with the mashed potatoes lining the sides and bottom of the dish as well as the top– so basically it’s called a pie because it has an encompassing “crust” made of potato
The French don’t consider it a pie though– more like a hash.

Right, what about this for staying on topicRight now I’m eating the leftover serve of the pie I made last night
What’s the pie, you ask? A cottage pie, except mac’n’cheese instead of mashed potatoes.
So why is this also called a pie?
Discuss.
I’m not sure if that is insane brilliance or all-out evil.

Why couldn’t it be both?

I’ve only gotten around to trying a macaroni pie, not sure I’m ready for cottage pie with macaroni cheese.

That sounds rotten.
Fun fact: Mac ‘n’ cheese isn’t a thing here- I had it once in college and was like….that’s it?

Interesting. Mac’n’cheese isn’t really a thing here either, but we know it from the saturation of our media coming from America, where it’s popular.
Seems the same way in other places then…

So far most of the mac’n’cheese I’ve eaten is mostly processed Kraft versions… from pricey restaurants. But I don’t exactly blame them, as cheese is a rare and expensive commodity in our country.

I don’t know what the rest are saying, I’d eat it, but then again I’d eat anything as long as it’s made with love. I think casserole might be a better term for it.

Yes, casserole could be a very good term for it, good thinking!
My heartfelt condolences for living in a country where cheese is rare…
