note: As part of the 2014 efforts to clean-up the forum and bring together threads that are better together than separated a number have been merged together to create this thread. Normally Ahhh Girl and myself (meanmistermustard) leave detailed notes to identify which posts were originally part of which threads pre-merge, however, due to the sheer amount of threads merged in this instance a note would simply be too long and convoluted.
When I first started collecting records, I bought based on authenticity rather than sound quality. If a record was a first issue, I’d choose that one over a newer, much later pressing. Well the audiophile has started in me and I can see myself becoming more “picky” towards the sound of my vinyl. This gradually happened by comparing this mix with that and listening for abnormalities and such. Since most of you that I have conversed with on this site still spin records, I’d like to “pick some brains” on a few such items.
1. Don’t try the “Do it Yourself” record warp fix. I did as the directions stated and got two plates of glass, made a sanwich with the record in the middle and baked for 10 minutes at 200 degrees f. I don’t know if I didn’t let it cool off enough before I cleaned to play….anyway the warp flattened out some but it is still there and I have added a bunch more surface noise/static to the record. So pretty much I ruined a first edition “Rubber Soul ” Parlophone pressing. It’s best to find someone who professionally does it.
2. Vinyl cleaner. Outside of the “Discwasher” brand you can still buy in stores, I’ve researched a few recipes for making a cleaner. Right now I am using a mixture of 2 parts denatured alcohol, 1 part distilled water, and a drop of Dawn dishwashing liquid/soap in a spray bottle. I can say so far that it does “clean” the records and they look better. I’ve also started vacuuming my records while still wet with cleaner. Used to I would just brush them with the record brush until dry. Does anyone have any different recipes or processes? I also found these people http://www.discdoc.com They state in their directions to use the brush back and forth rather than “with the direction of the grooves”. I am not sure which way is the best.
3. What’s the difference between a ceramic stylus and a magnetic one? Ive got both and there are people who prefer one or the other. Which has the best sound? I am currently running an old Realistic turntable (Lab-59) only for the fact that it’s a stackomatic. I don’t really like the inconvenience of having to switch records so much with the single play units.

I bought Abbey Road from eBay, and it just arrived this morning. I’m probably going to drive everyone mad (I’m listening to I Want You (She’s So Heavy) at the moment, ahaha) by playing it all the time.
So, I have two questions for you.
1. Which Beatles vinyls do you have?
2. Do you prefer vinyls or CDs?
Personally, I prefer CDs, mainly because my record player is crap.

Offline I don't really care as long as it's the beatles. Listening to a record is always cooler, but CD's give the better quality.

Offline We have two, but only one is an actual album of theirs. We have Sgt. Pepper 's Lonely Hearts Club Band and another one called 'Rock 'n' Roll Music', which is a collection of of their greatest rock 'n' roll hits, including Twist And Shout , I Saw Her Standing There , Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Long Tall Sally . I don't get to play them very often because the job of playing loud music…all the time…is already taken by one of my brothers. Sadly we don't share the same taste in music.
I'd like to be, under the sea, in an octopus's garden, with you.

1. I have A Hard Day's Night, Abbey Road , Let it Be, Magical Mystery Tour , Revolver , Rubber Soul , Sgt. Peppers, The White Album (embossed cover and serial number included!) Yesterday … and Today, The Beatles Second Album, Meet the Beatles!, Hey Jude , Beatles '65, The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl, and Introducing… The Beatles. My adopted sister's biological mother was one of the various screaming girls and she passed her records onto me <3
2. I prefer vinyl! Nearly cried when my record player broke. I need it to really SOUND like it's old music. Complete with raspy sound and occasional skips~

I have (deep breath) Please Please Me , With The Beatles , AHDN , Beatles For Sale , Help !, Revolver , Sgt Pepper , MMT, Abbey Road , LIB (box set), Hollywood Bowl, Rock & Roll Music and all of John's solo stuff on vinyl. I also have the fan club discs from 1963 (x2) and 1964, plus Band On The Run , Ram and Dark Horse . Oh, and The Beatles Story.
WTB, AHDN , BFS, Help !, Sgt Pepper and MMT were my parents'. The fan club flexi-discs were my mum's. The rest I bought from flea markets years ago before the prices became stupid. I think Revolver is a 1970s reissue but all the rest are originals. I should really get the White Album , Rubber Soul and Yellow Submarine to complete the set.
I have some singles too: Love Me Do , Get Back , Paperback Writer , She Loves You , Hello Goodbye . Those I just bought randomly from record fairs years ago.

Offline Wow, I only have one Beatles vinyl so far (Beatles' Hottest Hits from around 1964 I would guess) 
but I do have all the albums…I don't know which I prefer, but I think I prefer vinyls, I just think the sound is much “homier” lol 🙂

Offline The price always depends on the store and the record… the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Kinks, etc. ones at my local record shop are $15-20 but the rest are about $7…
You should get it, man!

Offline I have the EP Beatles collection (it was only published in the UK). The center really does give it away, because I have the “Do You Want To Know A Secret ?” American single. That was the only way to tell the difference from first glance
Are there certain ways to keep your vinyl clean that I should know about? I do want to play it, and not just keep it boxed up, but I want to make sure that I keep it in good condition.
I salute the lady who screamed "I love you Paul!" at a tribute band's concert.
