@Dark Overlord you can get custom finishes but you have to pay more than a little bit extra.

Congratulations @Martha, @ewe2, and @The Hole Got Fixed! I’m so excited for you — y’all are going to have so much fun. john-lennon-salute_gif

I know how it feels, Holey, I didn’t have an amp for about a fortnight after I got my guitar and it was quite a hard wait. Until then, you can either play it unplugged, just to get a feel for it, or plug it into your regular music stereo amplifier. It’ll be as clean as Paul’s grandfather a-hard-days-night-george-10 but at least it’ll be audible.

Martha, if you’re going to scrimp and save, between the guitar and the amp, I’d say scrimp on the amp —

— but don’t underestimate its influence on your tone — the amp is actually the most immediate sound you’ll hear. One can tell the difference between, say, a Les Paul and a Strat played through the same rig, but only if one knows what to look for — most of what you’re going to hear is the distortion, gain, etc. on the amplifier. You’ll want to try out your guitar on amps you are looking to buy to decide which sound you like best.

Best of luck to all you people with new guitars! apple01

I have a wait for an amp, but i have an old solid state amp i can use in the meantime, or just plug into my USB interface like a DI. I’m also going to be weird and make a bunch of patches in my bass effects thing for guitar! One of the amps modelled in the gt10-b is the fender bassman, which was popular with guitarists, so i’ll fake up a stack of 8×12’s. And most effects like chorus/delay/fuzz will work well with an SG. But I’m really keen on the baby tube amp, it’ll be fun.

The latest episode of Guitar Rookie Hour with Silly Girl and Sadie…

Curse the G String
First of all, this thing is a pain in the arse. It’s just thick enough to be stubborn as heck and just thin enough to never. Stay. In tune!

Put it through the bridge and tuning pin, calling it unsavoury names so that it will cooperate. Because we all know how much better inanimate things work when we cuss them out.

First, make it too short.

Pull it out some and have to deal with the kink as you wind it up.

Abuse your fingertips on the neighbouring tuners a few dozen times as you wind it up and curse the size and proximity of stock Fender tuning machines.

WIND THE STRING UP THE WRONG FECKIN’ WAY. paul-mccartney

Discover your mistake when you’re winding up the next string, sit down, and cry tears of shame.

Pull the string off only to discover, after all the fuss and bother and kinks, the tip of the string has broken off and it is now too short to use (at least on this particular guitar; I believe I can get away with it on the shorter-scale-length Martin — fingers crossed).

Crack open other set of strings, thank your lucky stars that you have this second set, rob it of its G string, and successfully wind it up.

Decide to cross the bridge of ‘What will I do about the other now-incomplete set of strings?’ when you come to it.

Grouse about it on the Beatles Bible.

SERIOUSLY y’all. I thought I could manage to change a few bleedin’ strings by now… it’s not freakin’ rocket science! What a beginner mistake! a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

I have thus embellished my princess:
IMAG4299_1.jpgImage Enlarger

Pickguard crap (I’m thinking of ‘improving’ the whole pickguard, but I’ll want colours and finer tips so I’ll have to acquire some new Sharpies) (What do you mean I should have rotated this image 45 degrees?)
IMAG4302_1.jpgImage Enlarger

Headstock sig (note the accursed stock Fender tuning machines, ‘battle scars’ [where, during a particularly fiery jam session, I thought it would be a great idea to end a song with a cymbal crash provided at my poor axe’s expense] and cool background)

Sadie is a great name for a guitar. Mine still hasn’t arrived yet but I haven’t taken thought about naming. Usually I call my basses male names based on their colour, so the white one is Mr White, the black one is Mr Black, and the red one is Mr Blue. Think I’ll have to see what personality the guitar has first. But in all cases:

Seems ironic that the central instrument in that song is the bass.

Thanks @ewe2, I think so two a-hard-days-night-george-9

Yeah, I’d say think of some names you might like and then wait till you’ve played the guitar a bit to pick one. And of course, we Biblers are always happy to make suggestions… especially Beatley ones. a-hard-days-night-john-6

And bass guitars are guitars too! john-lennon-salute_gif

They are, but basses seem to be more male than guitars, at least that’s what my anthropomorphic senses tell me. a-hard-days-night-george-9

It’s all about personal preference, there are male and female musical instruments of many kinds. My guitars are men but I know that some guitars like BB King’s Lucille are female. It’s similar to how many countries are female but Germany is a man.

Possibly, yeah. I think it depends very much on the curves of the axe in question; some just look more feminine than others. The colour can also have an effect; if I had a black Strat, I’d have given it a male name* and thought of it as such, but the white Strat just seems like a sexy lady to me. a-hard-days-night-george-9

But when I started naming my guitars, they seemed extremely androgynous to me, so I just picked out what I felt was a suitable name and let the name dictate the supposed ‘gender’, rather than the other way round. So, really, it could go either way.

*Probably Gilmour ahdn_george_06 or Gilly for short. a-hard-days-night-george-9

Precisely. Although I hasten to add, vocal range isn’t necessarily a gender marker, but that’s how I came to think of it. One of my ukes is female because she already had a name (Sally), and the other is male (Cedric) because he’s bigger and deeper.

Here he is (named him Barry*) in all his glory:

Still can’t really believe it, I’m so high! When I opened the package, I thought until the very last moment, that I’m only dreaming it and there isn’t really an electric guitar in the package but instead a new chair or something similarly boring- it was just too good to be true!

The last two hours, I’ve spent with playing every single solo I had learned on my classical guitar over the last couple of months and each time the satisfaction was so great when I heard how great it sounds with Barry.a-hard-days-night-paul-7 (well, Barry sounded great, I, on the other hand, have got plenty of practice to do!) There are also so many different sounds one can get out of an electric guitar and an amp, it’s mindblowing. I’m so in love!

*I chose Barry because it’s somewhat related to the Beatles AND Pink Floyd as Barry Miles is the author of Many Years From Now and Barry is also my nickname for a certain Mr Barrett.a-hard-days-night-george-10 And I also find the name cute.

Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

Barry really suits a sunburst Strat, excellent choice of guitar and name! a-hard-days-night-george-4 My SG is still in transit, still don’t know what I’ll call her. I’ve been looking at famous guitarists and their guitars, they all have weird names. Jimmy Page calls his favourite Les Paul “Number 1” (similar to Angus Young), Keith Richards calls his butterscotch blonde ’52 Tele “Micawber”, and Clapton has had a number of names for several guitars, but called his stolen Les Paul “Beano”.

But @ewe2 I’m not yours — oh. a-hard-days-night-george-10 Yeah, guitars usually have daft names, don’t they? They’re kind of like pets’ names, just silly nicknames to set that one apart from all the other Strats in your collection. But naming things, especially things I treasure as much as guitars, is a matter of greatest import to me, so I wouldn’t want something silly like ‘Beano’. ahdn_paul_01

Congratulations to you and Barry @Martha! You sound so happy together. a-hard-days-night-george-9 heart I completely empathize with you, though. I had exactly the same feelings when I found Sadie… I kept looking at her like she might turn out to be a dream, because I’d idolised Strats for so long (drooling especially longingly when watching David Gilmour’s Black Strat in Live At Pompeii a-hard-days-night-john-6) and I couldn’t believe I actually had one sitting in my bedroom and she’s ALL MINE, BABY a-hard-days-night-ringo-15

It occurs to me that if a guitarist and their axe are ‘in a relationship’ (which I certainly consider my case to be ahdn_george_06), it’s a very weird, possessive, one-sided relationship. a-hard-days-night-paul-7 Delightfully dysfunctional! a-hard-days-night-john-1
