For me its that aspect of freedom, no hang-ups, no thinking someone knows i’m on again, just being free to come and go and post without anything. I’ve said this before. I dont know how to describe it so it makes sense but its great and i really enjoyed it.
If its not for you then fine but it is for others. Its not harming anyone if someone hides their status so i don’t see where fuss and bluster comes from.

I thank you for reversing that decision. If we all hid, the place would look like a ghost town. I like the sense of community it brings to see folks signed in. ScrambledEggsjust mentioned the other day how comforting it is to see AD40 logged on so often. I feel the “connection” when I see folks logged in.

^ I think that was Linde and I like seeing people online though it would be weird to see someone online who normally hides their online status
I call it hiding because when you go in the options that is what the description calls it

I hate the “Rest in Peace” thread with a vengeance!
I was asked about my use of thread by PM the other day, don’t know how well my reply was understood.
The thread, in its original form, was a brilliant idea of Joe’s: somewhere for people to go to talk about personal loss, and to get support from the rest of our community.
Then, more-or-less by accident, without recognising the different intentions, Joe merged a newly created “dead celebs” threads with it.
To me that took away from the original aim of the thread, and meant that when it’s used it’s becoming increasingly buried in “dead celebs” and when people want to talk about something personal they wonder whether they’re in the right place.
There was discussion of this at the time of the merge, and Joe said he was happy for those unhappy using the “Rest in Peace” thread to continue using the “Derail” thread for “dead celebs” if they wished.
Usually, they end up in one thread or the other, depending on who posted the notification first. I use the “Derail” thread, while parlance uses the “RiP” thread. We seem to be the main people who say, “Someone’s dead!”
We both respect, I think, where the conversation has been started, and put our comments there.
For the first time, with Robin Williams’ death, we both heard it around the same time, and were both posting the dreadful news at the same time in different threads.
As I say, first time I can think that that’s happened though.
Myself, I would like to see “Rest in Peace” go back to its original purpose, so that when it crops up people know one of our group is hurting, rather than, “Ooo!! Another dead celeb!! Which one this time?”
That’s just me though.

They weren’t merged by accident. I thought it was too confusing to have separate RIP threads for celebs and non-celebs. It’s one of those tricky things, like having a birthday thread for people here, celebrities, and Beatles.
My position is still that I’d like RIP messages to go in that thread, but the Derail thread can be used for absolutely anything, so if you’d prefer to put something in there then please do so. As you know, the mods have been trying to put this house in order a little, but that thread will always remain untouched (usual forum rules apply).
I don’t think personal loss gets overshadowed by celebrity comments. People here have big enough hearts to notice when someone is writing something personal and can respond accordingly. If there are more celebrity death messages than those about forum members’ friends and family, I’m glad that people aren’t currently going through any bereavements (or not anything they choose to share, at least).

@Joe Just to quote you from the “Rest in Peace” thread at the time of the merge:
In truth, I merged the two threads then noticed they were actually intended for different purposes. So sorry about that.
Which I read then, and still do, as your saying the threads wouldn’t have been merged had you noticed. I apologise if I misunderstood your meaning there.

Oh OK, you’re probably right. TBH I can’t remember what I was thinking at the time. Perhaps it could have been handled better by renaming the threads so their purposes were clearer, but never mind.

I spent a whole day once with no charge whatsoever and relished the tranquility.
My job has me on the phone/computer quite a bit (I often post here during conference calls!) and once I’m off work, I have a great need for “me time” away from technology.

Juuuuust kidding. I’d probably just bother people around me with Beatley things they could care less about. And I wouldn’t know the great people on here.
