So, a week-or-so ago I made mention of Radiohead on the “Overrated Bands” thread, a judgement I felt qualified to make on the basis of buying OK Computer at a garage sale for $1 and playing it a couple of times. And then claiming that none of it was memorable. Anyways, Joe and IveJustSeenAFaceo encouraged me to give ’em another try, and even included a Youtube link to the entirety of The Bends for my edification. I promised I would check it out, and…I still haven’t. But I was encouraged enough to play OKC again last night (with mild herbal assistance) and hey, it’s pretty good! Cool guitar tones with no pointless soloing. (The lone solo isn’t even boring!) Lyrics that present an admirably varied and interesting assortment of tableaux. (And no abstract poetics to piss me off.) Some nice melodies, and a few boring ones decorated with weird production touches and textures to distract me and hold my interest. I still really dislike Thom Yorke’s singing (like an even more nasal Ray Davies) and find myself wishing he’d just bark or chant or shout instead. And I further wish the drummer was a little less laid-back. As for the bass playing…I didn’t notice it one way or the other.

Anyway, pretty good record. I retract my previous ill-informed statement. And look forward to finding The Bends and Kid A and In Rainbows in the dollar bins of the future. Even if only to change my opinion to “Ah, those guys never fulfilled the promise that OK Computer displayed.”

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Glad to see you gave ’em a shot and liked them.

The drummer’s barely on the two records after OK Computer because they loved drum machines so much. If you listen closely to the bass it’s really great. I don’t hear many complaints about Thom Yorke’s voice though.

Hope you like any future ones you get!

I always find it strange for the myriad of reasons one may like Radiohead. The hardest of the core fans tend to like their post “intensely depressing period” stuff the most, though from my perspective I absolutely love that period. I find OKC and Kid A to be records that continually bring me new things to listen to, and the sound of the songs always gives the impression that it’s from the future.

Personally I find Yorke to be the much more impressive side of what modern punkish musicians go for in aping Kurt Cobain. I can truly feel the energy and sadness in his voice, and it warps around so fantastically. Never been a real fan of the lyrics, but as with excluding lyric sheets on Kid A, they made it clear that the words are to convey a rhythm, which is my own philosophy as well. The messages they have are not in the songs, but in the albums themselves. Now that’s progressive rock.

It’s a shame that they way they’ve conveyed themselves is sort of poor. Not that I disagree with a bit of pessimism, and them going indy has been fantastic for the industry as a whole, but their shut away nature has not seem to done them any real favors. There’s No Surprises with their stage presence. They’re out in the Nude and they’re rather Lucky they can find any refuge at all. Mystery’s fine, but I’m a bit Let Down by the inability to talk about their art in anything but an abstract sense. I Might be Wrong, but maybe they’re working on that. Just trying to keep Optimistic and assume Everything is in the Right Place.

I like Radiohead.  I didn’t report it on the “What are you listening to?” thread, but I was listening to Hail To The Thief just yesterday.

EDIT: I also like the thread title.

I do as well, though I thought that was implid!

Listened to In Rainbows today. Got inspired so I’m learning some of the songs with the help of expert guru Warren. His videos had me learn the first three songs off of Ok Computer in a day! Albeit acoustically.

You really can’t help but be impressed from a songwriting perspective when you try replicating these songs. You realize how many layers there are, even in their pop-ier works. There’s a staggering amount of vision and creativity which I can’t even comprehend, let alone deconstruct.

I’m trying out Bodysnatchers and Jigsaw Falling Into Place, which are quite challenging (but then again, I suck) and really give a taste of the insanity Yorke has to deal with as a singer and rhythm guitarist, one area that I need to greatly improve upon. Their rhythms alone command respect, let alone the beautiful texturing in every single piece.

Man, I sound like a prog rock fan, don’t I?

Apparently a new record actually does exist.

Jonny Greenwood In India To Record Album, Provides Update On New Radiohead Record

“We’ve done a couple of months of recording, and it has gone really well. We haven’t listened to anything back yet, so at the moment we’re all very happy. Now, I guess we’re going to go and listen to what we’ve done and see if we were right to be so happy. But we left it at a good place when we last stopped. We’ve certainly changed our method again. It’s too involved [to explain how]. We’re kind of limiting ourselves; working in limits. So we’ll see what happens. It’s like we’re trying to use very old and very new technology together to see what happens.”

Maybe they’ll make it magically appear in everyone’s iTunes WITHOUT ASKING!

I like Radiohead, I’ve mentioned the friend who can’t make the leap back to the Beatles but I believe there is a legacy there of trying to do things differently and challenging themselves which is great regardless of how it turns out. Thats what art is about, the experiments. Artists are more preoccupied with the things they’re trying out and what lessons they learn from it rather than the results. It’s not that they’re not proud of the songs: you’ve got to love something about what you’re inevitably going to play hundreds of times, but once its out there, it’s out there for everyone not just them. I get what you’re saying about their persona @12StringKing; I think it’s a mixture of good old British reserve and the desire to not sound like Sting about it. Talking about it gets in the way of doing it too. Look at the top 40, those guys are really good at talking about themselves. Makes you think a-hard-days-night-ringo-2

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

It took me a long time to “get” Radiohead, but now I think OK Computer is probably the best 90s album. Kid A and The Bends are also good albums. I don’t really like their later stuff though. Give me Jonny Greenwood on guitar, please.

Having said that, Greenwood is also a fantastic composer. His scores for The Master, There Will Be Blood, and Murakami’s Norwegian Wood (yes, named after the Beatles song) are all excellent.

I told her I didn’t
