To be fair, Led Zeppelin are pretty heavy by early 70’s standards and while I’d label them as hard rock and blues rock as opposed to heavy metal I can see why they would get that label.
The early seventies are pretty heavy, 1970 sees the release of Back Sabbath debut album Black Sabbath and as well as Led Zeppelin, there is Deep Purple, Free… the music is darker and heavier, a shift from the sixties optimism. No one likes to be pigeonholed, all of those bands have light and shade and there is a strong blues, folk and mystical element to their music.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

There’s no need for that, but very good point. Myself I think of them as a blues rock band that dabbles in folk and metal amongst other styles.

Offline Listening to the fourth album and got to ‘Stairway to Heaven’, which, as I’m sure you know, I have only heard somewhere around 2,000 times and played possibly twice that, and every note of which is ingrained into my DNA like Beatles music…
and I just heard an accidental harmonic squeak/ping sound at 0:32 seconds in which I probably always knew was there subconsciously but never actually noticed until now, and it absolutely makes that part of the record what it is, and my mind is blown. 
Go listen to it, you’ll see what I mean 
To me, this is way more of a hidden message than backwards love-epithets to Satan!

Offline That part used to really annoy me, but I’ve grown to love it. I don’t listen to Stairway much though, the same way I don’t listen to A Day In The Life much. Makes for much better listening.

Same here. I listened to it by itself for so long that it got blown completely out of context; but now I only listen to it when I’m playing the album, and it’s beginning to fall back into place now. I’m remembering again why I love the song. 
On another note, I think Jimmy Page was the original progenitor of the shaggy-haired (optional) absurdly-long-guitar-strap (necessary cool) axe hero. Even Hendrix, as flamboyant as his stage presence was, had a more decent-length strap. For my part, I’ve noticed that since I’ve been playing Zepp, I’m about to lose my worried mind* my guitar strap has been growing in length, so that I’m no longer comfortable with a shorter strap anymore.

Offline Talking about Stairway to Heaven reminds me when I was 15 or so trying to figure the song out. I couldn’t get the chords after “and it makes me wonder.” Bahm, bahm, bahm, bahm. I think the high E string plays B, A, G, then A again. Anyway, I’m out once and a guy at a party has a guitar and says “I know those chords.” And my eyes are just ABSORBING this INFORMATION! My insides were THRILLED!! This guy KNEW THE CHORDS!!! I couldn’t tell you them now, but I’ll always remember that feeling …

(I had to pick up my guitar and play them to remember it) A minor 7, and then Am, Em, D, C, D in barred positions (though only the top three strings are played).
I can only imagine your thrilled insides, though. Nowadays with the Internet it’s so easy it almost isn’t worth it anymore, which is why I learn by ear, the hard way, whenever possible.
