I am about to leave on a journey…
…to see Roger Waters in concert.
I’ll be gone for a couple days, but I’ll be sure to tell you how it was when I get back!!! Until then, farewell!

I should be going to the record shop for the first time in two months on either Friday or Saturday. I saw The Beach Boys ‘ 15 Big Ones there last time, so I’m hoping to have enough for that, and perhaps some money left over for a single or two (probably Beatles).
Other than that, I have a feck ton of homework, and only 4 days of this half term holiday left, so I shan’t be bored!

This is so annoying and confusing: One gets ‘holidays’, but instead of actually getting a holiday, you have to do a million pieces of homework. It doesn’t really sound like a holiday by anyone’s standards, does it?

That moment when you’ve just finished a good take and you reach over to stop the recording…
and you realise it hasn’t even been recording the whole time.

I’ve just finished a) figuring out how to use Audacity and b) editing and mixing my recording of ‘Smile’ by David Gilmour — quite the learning experience.
Question: I’d like to share it with you all, but should I post it in my thread or the non-Beatles covers thread? I feel like I’m spamming something either way.

Today I decided that I’m going teach myself how to play the guitar. I’ve been playing drums for ten years but I want to start to write my own songs and thought that guitar was the best way since I already own one. I learnt three chords, the D, C and G chords. My fingers are killing me. Does anyone have any tips for guitar or songwriting?

Learn how to play bar chords, they play as much as you can! Once you get the fingerings, you can mess around in whatever key you want.
Also, The Beatles are your best friend. LEARN THEIR SONGS.

Just keep playing as much as possible to get your fingers strong quickly. Learn yourself all the basic open positions (C,G,A,Am,E,Em,D,Dm etc) then learn how to play bar chords in the A major/minor and E major/minor positions. If you’re interested in playing lead, I’d also start playing pentatonic scales starting on the E and G strings.
As for songwriting, mess about until you find a chord progression you like (an example would be A, E, B minor, D) and improvise some lyrics and melody based on whatever comes into your head. One thing Paul does is simple improvise vocal sounds and see if words start to form. He did this on Martha My Dear I believe. If you like what you’ve come up with, write it down, refine it and practice it. Then come up with a slightly different progression for a pre chorus (maybe F#minor and G major) and then either repeat the verse chords or come up with different chorus ones. Using the first, fifth, sixth, fourth progression (In this key of A major that would be A, E, F#minor, D) works for sad or more dramatic songs whereas happy songs often simply use the first and fourth chords (in this case A and D).
I don’t know how familiar you are with music theory so this will either be easy or confusing but hopefully the former.
Hope this helps, @Thommo , and if you want any other advice feel free to PM me.

he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yeah, my uncle’s in Minnesota right now and his plane back got delayed because they’re having a snow storm there. Imagine going trick or treating a couple days after a snow storm. Nobody’s costume is even going to be visible. ):

That’s really great @Thommo, It Won’t Be Long until you will deeply fall in love with your guitar! You are also very welcome to PM me if you have any questions, I may only be a beginner (for a few months now) but, in this case, that’s maybe actually helpful. Also, if you want to write songs I’d recommend learning some basic chords on the piano as well.
On other news, I’ve been on a concert trip to Moscow last week. In an ensemble of saxophones some students of my saxophone teacher, including me, played three different concerts together with Russian students. They went pretty well and we also saw a lot of the city which was mindblowing. We went to see the Red Square, the Kreml, different museums and churches, also the very famous St Basil’s Cathedral with the onion-domes towers, and we saw Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and a saxophonist’s concert. All in all, Moscow flooded me with all the impressions. Not only was it the biggest city I’ve ever been to with its 12.4 million inhabitants, also the way of thinking and the level of discipline and surveillance is totally different than in Germany. I didn’t know, for instance, how strongly prominent communism still is in Russia. And we also had snow and minus degrees, that was cool!
