I’m sure many here know this photograph, taken by Burk Uzzle at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, 50 years ago this week, it became one of the defining images of the ’60s when used on the cover of the soundtrack album of the film in 1970.

The couple seen hugging are Nick Ercoline and Bobbi Kelly, behind them lying on the ground under a blanket to the right is their friend who’d driven the car, Jim “Corky” Corcoran, a Marine who was just back from a tour in Vietnam.

Nick was 20 while Bobbi was 19. They were reasonably near and heard on the radio to stay away, that it was turning into a disaster, the three looked at each other and the two other friends they were with decided this a “moment” and they had to go; and the next morning all five piled into Corky’s mother’s car, got as close as they could before abandoning the car and continuing on foot.

And so we have this iconic image of them.

I look at pictures like this and I wonder what happened to people in it.

Two years later, in August 1971, Nick and Bobbi married, and 48 years later are still married, with children and grandchildren.

I like that. It reminds me of John’s line in his last interview:

I’m really talking to the people who grew up with me. I’m saying “Here I am now. How are you? How’s your relationship going? Did you get through it all?”

There’s something quite beautiful about knowing the couple from that iconic image were not just passing strangers, and that they built a life together, and that they got “through it all”.

They’re attending the 50th anniversary event this weekend (at which Ringo’s playing) but as Bobbi says:

We’re really not the couple on the cover anymore. We’re Grammy and Papa now.

Sadly Corky passed away last September, but Nick and Bobbi Ercoline are still going strong, and still together.

Binman Ben Bird struck up a friendship with one of the elderly ladies on his route of eight years, Dorothy Ballad (known as Mercy). Their weekly collection coincided with her 100th birthday, and he’d promised to surprise her when she reached the landmark…

…and he did!!! What a beautiful gesture and moment!!!

Not sure how that fits this thread, @AppleScruffJunior; more a comment for the philosophy or derail thread. Don’t see how, as you call it yourself, “the over-patriotism that is completely normal in America whereas in any European country it could be considered borderline fascism,” is not something to discuss and debate? Especially in the age of Trump.

This thread is meant for uncontentious posts that will make people smile rather than, as I’m feeling now, wanting to point out all those things wrong with your view which would derail the thread.

Oh yeah I like it in a cutesy way. Especially that bald eagle, it’s the freedom bird.

Anybody wants to talk about fascism in the US in the philosophy thread, well it’s been such a sh*t show in there recently, that’ll you definitely get some response. 

Happiness: I don’t know if I’ve said this before but if the whole reincarnation-lark is true, I want to be a middle-class American, in my mid-50s, travelling through Europe, they always seem to be having the best time.
