I thoroughly enjoy listening to all the various live Beatles shows that have surfaced. Hearing them do the songs you know from the records totally different live is unbelievable. I find that almost all of them are phenomenal, even in 66 they were on fire at times regardless of how they felt about touring. So imo here are the best shows from each year. Sorry if this topic has already been discussed but I did not see a recent thread. It is very hard for me to pick a favorite lol
1963 – Stars of 63, Sweden
1964 – Washington, Melbourne, or Hollywood bowl
1965 – Atlanta, Rome, or Minneapolis
1966- Candlestick park, or Budokan 2nd show

Offline Hard to say but the live performances i’ve seen/heard from the earlier concerts seemed better.
I would probably go for Washington or the Hollywood Bowl.
I’ve seen footage from the second Budokan show and they really didn’t seem into it. Also I’m pretty sure that all four of them agreed that they’d gotten a lot worse at performing. You can especially tell with songs like Nowhere Man .

Offline I definitely agree the early performances were superior, especially their BBC stuff and the Star Club Tapes. In the first Budokan show with the black suits they definitely seemed out of it but I think they tightened up pretty nice for the next documented show (grey suits). One of the best “I Feel Fine ‘s” they ever did!

Yeah that’s true, that live version of I Feel Fine was awesome. I guess they were just more primal during the early Beatlemania period and they had a lot more to prove. By 1966 they were already the biggest band in the world and were looking for new avenues in their music.
It must’ve been incredible to see them early on…

Offline This might not count but my favorite live performance by them would have to be their 1968 concert where they performed Hey Jude and Revolution , although technically they only performed the vocals live. I just love that performance of Revolution , they even added backing vocals akin to the album version. Also, I think that The Beatles got better throughout their career, peaking in 1968, so the songs that they regularly performed live are in my opinion inferior to the songs that they never played live.

Offline I’m not sure if it has been mentioned before, but they did an amazing performance on a Swedish Tv show in 1963. You can find it on YouTube with the title ‘live Beatles early rare and great sound’ I think. Anyways, they do killer versions of a few numbers and although the mix is bad and John’s guitar far too loud, they sound very tight and polished, and without a screaming audience you can hear them properly. They do Long Tally Sally as their encore and you can see the next band to play standing at the back like ‘s**t, we have to follow this’.
P.S I’m not sure what the rules are about swearing on here, so if there’s a problem with it I’ll be happy to edit my post.

Ya the stress each one of these shows must have caused by 66 would be unbearable lol. Once you broke every record at that time what else could you expect.

Thank god that performance is on youtube amazing! I love watching their early videos and seeing how much they changed over the years lol. Their songwriting abilities definitely peaked by 67/68 if you ask me.

Another gem thank god the footage survived. The worst part of all these live recordings is how bad the sound guys were lol Georges guitar is always so low! So weird to hear them perform without all the screaming. My favorite 63 show was the “practice” set leading up to this tv special. Idk what would be worse opening for The Beatles or having to follow them lol.

Very tight performance my only complaint is Georges low guitar :/. Beatlemania was just so massive in Australia they could not disappoint.

1963: Royal Variety
Very tight vocals, And my personal favorite live version of She Loves You & Twist And Shout . And of course we can’t forget “Rattle your jewelry.”
1964: Mix between 1st Ed Show and Washington.
I liked the down tuning of the Guitars, very new feel to otherwise older songs. And Ringo was literally killing his sticks in Washington.
1965: Mix Between 4th Ed Show & Shea Stadium
Both had nice vocals, and fantastic drumming by Mr. Starr
1966: Candlestick Park
The Last Concert, And I feel they put their best effort.

Ah yes the Royal Variety, definitely cannot count that one out! My personal favorite “From Me To You “. The first 3 Ed shows were unbelievable and MOST of the last one lol.
Ringo was on fire at Washington! On the “I Saw Her Standing There ” he tore it up, similar to the Stars of 63 one. Minneapolis 65 is another gem just a rough recording. Candlestick rocked only if the rest of that “Long Tall Sally ” was recorded, apparently it was Pauls best Little Richard scream ever! Im sure you know the story.

Tokyo (AFP) – It’s been a hard day’s fight, but a group of Japanese Beatles fans have lost their bid to get police to hand over historic footage of the band’s 1966 Japan visit.
The superfans took their battle for the film — recorded by police as a security measure — all the way to Japan’s supreme court, arguing the images were a “historical document.”
Police had offered to release the footage, reportedly about 35 minutes long, but only after blurring the faces of everyone in the film except the Beatles, citing privacy reasons.
Two lower courts backed the police against a group of citizens from Nagoya who wanted the entire film released uncensored, saying it would be almost impossible to identify people in the footage more than 50 years later.
But the long and winding legal battle ended last week when the supreme court rejected their argument, the group announced.
The Beatles toured Japan only once, playing five concerts, and were trailed across the country by legions of screaming fans.
A lawyer for the group seeking the footage said it would have huge historical significance for Beatles enthusiasts.
“It is a document that should be made available from a historical standpoint,” lawyer Satoshi Shinkai told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
“The final concert given on July 2 was apparently electrifying,” added fan Toru Omura, who has written books about the impact of the group’s tour.
“If confirmation can be made of the existence of footage from that day, there would be huge excitement,” he told the newspaper

Since this is police security footage it seems unlikely it would have audio, and since there is no known audio of the 2 July concert, difficult to tell just how “electrifying” the performance was from just silent footage.
Strange that, while these fans want to see the footage, they don’t want to see it if everyone but The Beatles are blurred for privacy reasons (as the police have offered). Until someone views what the Japanese police filmed, it can only be speculation that there is any footage of the 2 July performance.
