We all know that the B-side of the album Yellow Submarine is filled with orchestral instrumentals composed by Martin, with no Beatle participation at all. So, guys, what do you think of it?

Which option comes closest to ”I like some of them and when I’m in the mood I listen to them”?

I’d go with what Linde said.

Which option comes closest to ”I like some of them and when I’m in the mood I listen to them”?

They can be a very soothing listen at times, very enjoyable, but dont listen to them that often. Usually i’ll go for the Pepperland Suite which is a 6 minute cutdown delight of the whole side but with some additional drumming. Very very cool.

I’ve never even listened to them. I have seen the movie though, so I guess I actually have. Yellow Submarine is the only Beatles album I’ve never listened to in full. I started off with the mono box, which comes with the four new songs off Yellow Submarine , so I never really felt it was necessary to buy Yellow Submarine . I have it on vinyl now, though, so maybe some day I’ll get around to listening to it.

I’ve always liked the instruments from Yellow Submarine . I wouldn’t rank them very highly on a list of Beatles song, but they’re enjoyable. “Sea Of Time ” just drips with George Harrison influence, and the “Sea Of Holes ” and “Sea Of Monsters ” aren’t too bad either. I think it just takes more of a taste for classical to enjoy those. Probably also the reason I like the Pink Floyd album “Atom Heart Mother ” a lot.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8I enjoy the instrumental tracks as well – very relaxing.

Pepperland ‘ reminds me of the tune for the show ‘Newhart’.

No poll option for “I’ve rarely listened to them (aside from passively, while watching the movie) but I suppose they make good soundtrack music. And it makes me really happy to know that George Martin probably earned a lot of money in royalties from them – he deserves it!”

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I’ve only listened to them twice. Don’t even have them on my phone yet. The Pepperland soundtracks are my favorite.

And if you saw my love, I'll love her to.

It isn’t on my phone, but I do have the cd and listen to it when I’m in the mood to listen to them.

I picked “I don’t have an opinion” apparently at some point, but I listened through them today sort of on accident but didn’t turn it off. I enjoy it!

I have a confession to make.

I had my iPhone on Random play and liked what I heard, but didn’t recognize it as March Of The Meanies until I looked to see what it was. blue-meanie

This is what I felt so I had to choose “I like them” which was closest for me.

I personally just have to be in the mood to listen to them. If I’m not, I won’t even turn on the album. I think they’re interesting though. Nice background music while on a computer or something like that.

I was delighted to hear these songs, even though they are properly sound tracks. I didn’t realize (until reading this thread) that George Martin was the original composer!

I recently listened to some these in my alphabetical order. Namely, when I came to the “Sea of…” songs.

I'm Necko.  I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

I'm also ewe2 on weekends.

It’s not that the songs are bad, but I think that it was stupid to put them on here, they should’ve stuck the 4 songs on an EP (maybe with Lady Madonna and or The Inner Light ) like they were going to before George Martin said “That’s unfair, I want my songs on the album”. Also, I wonder, did George play tamboura on Sea Of Time or was it just a session musician.

Maybe you should try posting more.

The album was their decision.

First thought was an EP, in around September 1968. No work was done on it, and then it was postponed for the release of the White.

Then it’s an album, released January 1969 (with some believing including the George Martin side was a thank-you for his contribution to it all by giving him his biggest Beatles paycheck on a plate).

After that came the complaints about Beatles fans being short-changed, and them considering the complaint enough to put together a five track EP in March 1969 (adding Across The Universe to the four unreleased soundtrack recordings). Ultimately, nothing was done with it until Mono Masters decades later.

I think it’s weird that they released it after The Beatles because everything on the A side was recorded before anything on the White Album . You can argue the same thing for Let It Be and Abbey Road , but at least I Me Mine , the good solo on Let It Be , and the orchestra on The Long And Winding Road and Across The Universe were all recorded after the release of Abbey Road . And they should’ve done a stereo EP, as no one wanted mono in 1969 or at the very least, they could’ve done what they did with Magical Mystery Tour and released both a stereo and mono release.

Maybe you should try posting more.

I do view it as a somewhat different situation, @HMBeatlesfan.

Their other soundtracks were, pretty much, alongside the films they soundtracked, whereas YS‘s 4 new songs were pretty much rejects. So, them viewing the White as their more important release, and not wanting the YS soundtrack to detract, is understandable.

That they only prepared a mono EP when they decided to consider one, doesn’t mean it would not also have been stereo, bar Across The Universe , they already had the stereo mixes.
