Its the normal regular versions remixed from the original tapes so there are differences in the songs, some work well (Eleanor Rigby ) some not so much (Lucy In The Sky). I wouldnt go to the extreme of saying your missing out if you dont have it but then i dont play them that often anyway.
The best thing to come from it all were the 5.1 mixes that allowed for hearing isolated channels and therefore things you’d never otherwise get to hear – Pauls awful amateur trumpet blasts (Only A Northern Song ), someone ringing the living daylights out of a bell (All Together Now ) and the orchestral work of Eleanor Rigby which is far more interesting than the karaoke track on Anthology 2 . I’d say hunt down the Kaleidoscope bootleg instead.

I bought the YSS album last month – I’d never had it before. Some of the remixes sound a lot punchier than even the 2009 remasters. Hey Bulldog , for instance. I wish the Abbey Road guys would remix the whole back catalogue – they could do some amazing things with it.
By ‘remixing’ I mean bring out the instruments, make them shine; not add crappy drums and synths to ruin some perfectly good recordings, like those Love Me Do remixes.

I get lost with the various versions.
There are two basic versions: the original (the one that’s half orchestral music) and the Yellow Submarine 2.0 that includes all the songs in the movie minus the orchestral stuff.
Then there have been re-mixes and re-masterings of each, no?

Does the Songtrack even exist for sale anymore? I thought it would’ve been allowed to go out of print when the remasters came out.
I’ve never owned the Songtrack myself, but it is worth hearing. Like Joe said, some of the remixes are better than the remasters of a decade later. (Also, didn’t YSS provide the first-ever true stereo version of “Only A Northern Song “?)

Wow, definitely worth buying, especially at that price!
I’d certainly buy it for myself, anyways. It occurs to me that those four YS tracks are the only Beatles tracks I’ve never owned on CD. Well, not counting the Anthologies or the BBC sessions or any oddities like that.

There was no remaster of Songtrack since one wasn’t needed, as the original album was a remix from the original tapes. Much like LIB … Naked hasn’t been remastered.

No reissue either. Are we just missing LIBN and Live At The BBC from having a complete download frenzy at itunes or have i missed something out?

I would buy it as a collector, but other than that, I already have the songs (multiple versions of those on YSS and most Beatles songs, hence why I have 836 on my iPod) so I see no other point to buy it. If they were different versions of the songs, yeah I would definately get it. Oh, and as a side note, a few years ago when I first looked up YSS, I remember reading somewhere that the version of “Yellow Submarine ” on YSS had the outtaked spoken intro on it, and I don’t remember where I read it, because it’s certainly not on the album.

I thought the same until today – I need to do my research a lot better. I hadn’t realised this was a remix and not just a remaster, and that these remixed versions are not the mixes in the 2009 sets. Having just listened to the remix of Dylan’s Street Legal and how much it adds to the experience of the original, I have just ordered Songtrack off ebay – I used my own card this time as it has a LEETLE space on it
I have seen claims such as this: “That same day, the 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD will also see a remastered reissue.” Anyone able to confirm that it was remastered when it was reissued in 2012?

So far as I’m aware there was no remaster for the 2012 reissue, though it may have had a “mastered for iTunes” release. As I say above, there would be no reason to remaster as it was such a modern remix.
The version of Yellow Submarine with the spoken intro restored was part of the Anthology releases, and was included on the Real Love CD single.

^ thanks for the info, I have the Real Love and Free As A Bird CD singles, some interesting tracks on them.
[EDIT] I heard it was remastered to apply the same ‘limited limiting’ they had on the 2009 CDs.

Damn, I guess that means I’ll have to buy it again?
The remixes were such a revelation that if I’m being honest I don’t mind even if there is only around 5% improvement. They are that good.

Don’t take my word on it right away – mja may be right – it’s just something I read but haven’t yet been able to confirm, though I saw this on Amazon (no idea if they know of what they speak):
“Everyone is actually incorrect in saying the 2012 digipak is exactly the same sound as the original 1999 release because it is NOT. The difference is the digipak uses EMI’s new slight limiting (similar to the 2009 stereo CD box) instead of the screeching loud full compression slam you hear on the original 1999 release. In my opinion the 2012 release sounds so much better and smoother and not harsh at all. I prefer the sound of the digipak and I am getting rid of my 1999 copy. This same situation goes for the RED and BLUE albums as well.”
Looks like it’s time to head to the waveform analysis if anyone has both versions.

No need to come over all “Hoffman” on me there!
I wonder if the Digipack release had anything to do with being “Mastered for iTunes”? I’ve got iTunes Match and my album won’t “match” with the iTunes version.

Ha ha – I must have been spending too much time over there lately
I have the digipack on order from ebay – I can check to see if it will match with iTunes when it arrives (umm – once someone tells me how to do that).

It’s a paid for subscription service – essentially it allows you to “match” your library with what is on iTunes, anything not on there but on your iTunes library will be uploaded. You can then access your library from another PC or iPhone or iPad (assuming you have one of course) by streaming or downloading. It’s also handy in that you can replace any lower bit-rate songs on your library with better quality ones from the iTunes Store.
I did this recently as The Beatles albums are now “Remastered for iTunes” – so I replaced my cd rips with better quality versions. Listening to some of them they are definitely an improvement, even on the cd’s, well I think so anyway It’s even great for replacing those lower bit rate tracks you may have lurking from dubious sources *cough*, assuming it matches correctly of course, which is why the Mono box was a nightmare – officially the tracks don’t exist on iTunes (well, some of them until the US albums are released tomorrow that is), iTunes would match some mono tracks, how?
Anyhow, I won’t be renewing again but it was deffo worth having for a while. Funny thing is, it must match by analysing waveforms-if it’s good enough for a machine…………
