I think it should’ve been released as an EP, with George Martin’s score on another EP.

Offline Even though it’s my least listened to Beatles Album (as a whole), I enjoy it the way it is. To be honest, the times I do get the LP out, I usually play side 2.

Offline To be fair, The Beatles had no involvement on any of the songs on side 2 of Yellow Submarine so they’re not really Beatles songs, even Joe acknowledges this.

Well they’re official in that they’re on a Beatles album. But in reality, no, they’re just written about here for the sake of completion – I don’t consider them Beatles songs any more than Ken Thorne’s incidental music for Help !, which was released on that US album.
Yellow Submarine is a Beatles/GMO split album.
But if you think they’re worth listening to, there’s places online to listen to them.

Well, if you’ve seen the movie, you technically have — albeit with sound effects/dialogue and the like over them.
I think Yellow Submarine was always in an awkward spot. The sole reason it was made into an album was because EPs didn’t sell well in America, and there wasn’t enough other material from the group to fill out an entire album (even with the inclusion of “Across The Universe ,” as was originally intended on the proposed EP despite that song not appearing in the movie) the way there was for Magical Mystery Tour .

Dark Overlord you could maybe include a “something else” option for your polls!
I kinda wish it existed as a “2lp Soundtrack Album, featuring The Beatles ” with all the songs and the score; plus, to pad it out, add a coupla weird items like the extended IATM and alternate mix of YS (to close side 4) plus the boob’s singing, selected repartee from the film, and audio outtakes of the boys filming their cameo.

I’m not too sure if anyone has heard the Monkees soundtrack to their film HEAD but it has 14 tracks and 7 of those tracks are actual Monkees songs. The other tracks are bits of dialogue from the film and incidental music so it is all mashed together and it makes for an interesting listening experience.
I kind of wish the Yellow Submarine album was like that as it would have fit the psychedelic feel of the film.

Offline That looks like a cool soundtrack! The storybook is a wild idea…
Me, I’d have mixed up the songs (including the earlier album repeats like “Eleanor” and “Nowhere Man ” and the rest) and orchestral movements and random spoken bits/audio cues out so they matched their appearance in the film chronologically, rather than devoting an entire album side to the score alone. But that’s just me.
Ooh, and the album cover would be a gatefold almost identical to this film poster
with additional cover credit to George Martin somewhere.

Offline All of this talk is making me wonder, what if they did what they did for The Hobbit and released the entire film on vinyl, albeit just the audio. Yellow Submarine is about 87 minutes long and since an LP can hold up to about 30 minutes per side, that means that they could’ve released the audio track of the entire film on 2 LP’s and as an added bonus, played songs like Love You To , A Day In The Life , and With A Little Help From My Friends in their entirety despite them only appearing in the film partially. That’s a great idea and if they did this, Yellow Submarine could’ve been released on the same day as the film.

Offline I have only listened to the B-side once, 30 years ago. The Beatles themselves had nothing to do with making this music. I wish the Beatles had made more of their own songs and filled the album’s B-side with them instead. Perhaps Hey Jude and Revolution could have been used on this album.
Perhaps the Beatles didn’t have enough songs to fill an album. Both Yellow Submarine and All You Need Is Love are re-used. Only ANorthern Song was a leftover from Sgt. Pepper ’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
I don’t even have the original YS album. Instead I have Yellow Submaring Songtrack on vinyl, where all the Beatles’ own songs on the original A-side are included.

Offline There’s only one theme of George martin’s score that i like…….But I like it very much.
It took me a long time to cough up the dosh for this album, mainly because amongst the new Beatles music I was only desperate to hear the rarely broadcasted Hey Bulldog …….. I didn’t buy this until CDs came along.
For me if it had been an EP like Magical Mystery Tour ……..I’d have bought it on the first day of release.
Having said that….. I’m glad we have it all…..Nowadays the hard-up and the frankly tight-arses can always borrow it from a library and copy the bits they want.

Offline I think the album would have been better without the orchestral scores, but I still love it. Hey Bulldog is a fantastically amazing masterpiece, and the world would be a sad place without it. No matter what else was on it– all the other tracks could be five-minute chunks of silence, or even worse, Yoko songs (sorry, I couldn’t resist)– and I would still love the album, just because it had Hey Bulldog .
