Isn’t the Yellow album basically a sound track album?

Yes. I think the argument is that it only has 4 unreleased (at that time) Beatles tracks and a whole side of orchestral/incidental music from the film. So it’s not a REAL Beatles album the way the AHDN and Help ! “soundtrack” albums were.

YS is a “real” Beatles album, although it’s certainly their weakest…only really necessary for the 4 unreleased tracks that were included on it. Still, standing alongside the film (which I love), it’s just fine. Weird timing releasing it so soon after the White Album , though. And with that psychedelic imagery (and music) it was already a bit out of date, especially with the back-to-basics sound of the White Album still ruling the charts and sales figures.

Perhaps it was one of those albums released as a ‘contractual obligation’?

There was much debate. An EP similar to MMT double-EP was also seriously considered. It definitely wasn’t a contractual on albums though, @trcanberra. Their 1967 contract specified songs they’d deliver, not albums. Part of the argument about the 30 song White Album  (okay, 29 song and 1 audio collage) is that they were rushing to fulfil the song requirement element of their contract.

To me, i see Yellow Submarine as a Beatles album, although not their best due to them thinking the movie would be awful, but i love Northern Song and It’s All Too Much, and George Martin’s soundtrack!

I think it’s a genuine soundtrack album, the movie was contractual obligation anyway. It’s a bit mind-bending to see its place in the chronology given the original song was release way back on Revolver .

Also, I think we should have a song parodies thread, Zig’s work should be recognised for its genius.

…the movie was contractual obligation anyway…

And there’s the rub, in that it didn’t fulfil their contractual obligation of three films for United Artists. The last minute addition of a live action sequence attempting to disguise the lack of Beatles, or Beatle voices, in the film, made no difference.

And so the disaster of Get Back /Let It Be  was turned from a TV project to a UA project, fulfilling their contract for three films.

But that is another, and altogether more complicated, story…

I bought the 2009 remaster version last Saturday but I only ripped the 4 “new” (very loose meaning of the word) songs onto my iPhone because other than that it’s basically a con in my eyes. ahdn_paul_01

Its not the Beatles but the George Martin orchestral tracks are well worth the listening time every period after a long gap. Either that or save yourself 12 minutes and indulge instead in ‘The Pepperland Suite’.

This is just as much an album as the early cut & paste hack jobs released by Capitol. When the world stops referring to those as albums, I’ll stop referring to this as one. Fair enough?

When I had all my LPs arranged in order, I seem to recall this one saying “Yellow Submarine – The Beatles” on the spine in that distinctive EMI spine font.  So, yes, it’s a Beatles album.  End of.

Yellow Submarine was a throw together album to release the 4 throw away songs that they used purely because they needed new songs for the movie.

Yep, officially released EMI product, considered canon.

I happen to think it’s fine. I LOVE the orchestrations by George Martin. I put that side on when I want to chill. And the songs by the band may be “throwaways” but I love ’em. Though, I have always had a childhood induced soft place in my heart for the movie and LP.

Whats this talk of “throwaways?!” Only A Northern Song pure genius, especially in context. Hey Bulldog is widely regarded as one of the most underrated Beatles Songs.

Same as AHDN , Help , MMT, its a soundtrack album. Just because this one isn’t pure pop doesn’t mean it isn’t an album.

I think its more in terms of the Beatles giving the songs to the project as they didn’t deem them to be of the highest quality or they are viewed to be just lying around in the vaults. ‘Only A Northern Song ‘, for example, is a rejected ‘Pepper’ track that we now know George Martin found boring and asked George for something better.

For me, Yellow Submarine falls under the specific sect of albums that I call ‘soundtrack albums’.  These albums contain music that is pretty much only from the movie, and often contain instrumental music from the movie.  The American versions of A Hard Day’s Night and Help ! are soundtrack albums because they contains songs from the movie, and instrumental music that is also in the movie.  However, I don’t consider the British versions of those two to be soundtrack albums because their entire second sides contain songs featured nowhere in the movie.  I would consider the UK EP Magical Mystery Tour to be a soundtrack album because it contains only songs from the movie, but the American LP version wouldn’t be a soundtrack album.  Another example would be Queen’s Flash Gordon, which is made up entirely of songs from the movie, would be a soundtrack album.  While their A Kind Of Magic album is not because it has a lot of non-movie material, even though most of its songs are in Highlander.

I love the original tracks!! I was just calling the album what it was when they made it.  The 4 original tracks are some of my favorite Beatles songs.
