With The Beatles turns 50 on Friday so what better way than to mark the event.
A cracking LP that blows apart the idea of the difficult second album, it displaced Please Please Me at #1 in the UK album charts, which had held the top spot ever since its release back ion March 1963, and showed clear progression in the self-penned material (including the debut composition from George). Excellent covers also showed growth in the Beatles music.

One of my favourite Beatles albums, and by far one of the best ”pop” albums of all time. I think it represents a move towards maturity – both musically and personally.
50 years – wow. And still we’re talking about it. That speaks more volumes than anything.

A pretty underrated album, takes time to know better – but also their first more consistent and self conscious one. I guess this is an important date.
My favorite songs from it are “Not A Second Time “, “All My Loving ” and “Roll Over Beethoven “.

You actually brought up a good point about being an underrated album, but I have to say that my favorites are All My Loving , Roll Over Beethoven , Please Mr Postman, I Wanna Be Your Man , and money. I technically like the album, not the best, and do not understand why it is underrated. It is also the White Album ‘s 45 birthday too.

Highly underrated. I am still waiting for someone to write a song even close to Not A Second Time .

Yeah, I ever even heard a cover version either. If not that, good luck finding something similar.

The Pretenders covered Not A Second Time in the early ’90s, and in 2007 The Smithereens covered the whole of the Meet The Beatles as Meet The Smithereens, which – of course – included – Not A Second Time .

Thanks, I am going to have to hear that. Unless it is a bad cover, then second thoughts.

A fantastic album. As much as I love Please Please Me , With the Beatles is a far superior album both visually and sonically. The leap in maturity and confidence is huge.

^Yeah, I agree with that 100%. I can’t believe the jump they made between the first two albums sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love PPM , but artistically speaking, I think With is much more superior.
Today’s been such a whirlwind, I almost forgot it’s the anniversary

“What I do not get is that it is underrated. Why, it is such a good album.”
For quite a long time this was my less favorite album – that changed after discovering some of their middle-era albums (Revolver and Rubber Soul ). I listened to this and PPM and I was quite surprised to realise now I prefer this one. Not A Second Time probably played a role in that, it’s still my favorite song from this album.

Just FYI, I merged the two threads as mmm created the same one a few days ago. Please, see if anyone has beaten you to it before creating new threads. Thanks.

Wasn’t sure where else to put this, but someone at Reddit posted a pic of the Australian cover of the album that I thought was interesting.

In my personal top 5, this album would be at number 5. Very powerful and still a good balance between the songs. In my opinion much better and more ‘mature’ than their first album “Please Please Me “.
