Offline It still ceases to amaze me how George let Eric Clapton play on WMGGW even though he took his wife! Although it seemed to me George wasn’t too fussed about it all.

I can just see some youngster putting the record on that track while a very straitlaced starch-collared stiff-upper-lip family sits listening. In fact, I had an experience much like this many years ago (early 1970s). A high school friend invited me over to his house where we used to listen to records and play around on his guitar in his room, and once for some reason he brought me down to the living room where his mother, father and little sister were just sitting there. I guess they wanted to meet me, his friend, and I think they asked me what music we were listening to. That day, it was an album I was very excited about, Ram . And for some crazy reason, the one song I wanted to “share” with this decidedly “square” family was the most brazenly outrageous song on that album — Monkberry Moon Delight . 
The mother and father just sat there, trying to mask with pained politeness their growing horror as Paul kept escalating his screaming. When it was over, they said calmly but firmly that they didn’t care for it. At the time, as a teenager, I couldn’t understand why they didn’t like it. In retrospect, I didn’t appreciate the astounding fact that at least those parents sat there to listen to the entire song!

I used to not like The White Album too much. I liked the individual songs better than the whole album. I listened to it straight through a couple months ago, though, and it was magical. I never really liked Back In The USSR either but now it’s one of my favorites, same with Dear Prudence and Julia .
It was more laziness than dedication- I left side 4 on the record player for like a week and a half and I don’t know- it felt like 1968 for a second there 
and yeah totally – “Good Night ” too haha

My observation about White:
2 songs mention the ultimate flower child flower, the daisy. I’m guessing Paul and John saw a lot of daisy during those years.
“Mother Nature’s Son ” has “Swaying daisies, sing a lazy song” and
“Dear Prudence ” has “The clouds will be a daisy chain”

Offline The White Album is my all-time Favorite Beatles album. I love its eclecticism. I think it represents the peak of the Beatles as songwriters.

Offline LOVE this album, cousin gave it to me Christmas 1968, I was 8 years old! Some of the songs scared the crap outta me….often wondered, since Sir George Martin wanted to put out ‘a very good single album’, what his tracklisting would have been…?

Offline The White Album has always been my favorite. I’ll admit that Abbey Road and Revolver are stronger pieces of work, but the White Album has always had such a unique charm to it. Sure, it might have some weak songs (how the hell did ‘Wild Honey Pie ‘ beat out ‘Not Guilty ‘ anyway?), but the strong songs easily Carry That Weight .

^agreed, it’s my favorite. It has such atmosphere to it…not necessarily dark, but a bit unsettling and foreboding, but in a good way. Almost like you can picture them recording the entire album in a dimly lit studio with a lot of cigarette smoke wafting around. And it has a very unique sound and feel to it, unlike anything before or since. Finally, all of the little oddities and curios tucked into every corner and nook and cranny of the album make it unique amongst Beatles’ albums, in my view.

Offline What with all the ongoing celebrations by Apple for the 50th anniversary of With The Beatles , the 45th anniversary of the White Album , occurring on the same day, will no doubt go past without much attention. The greatest sprawling wide-ranging collection of tracks on one album by one band ever deserves some praise.

Offline As noted earlier in this thread I really liked this album ‘back in the day’. Well, I am now up to this point in my listening rediscovery and just finished the first CD. A few random thoughts:
- I still love it, an astonishing evolution from Peppers.
- I love the variety, even by the same lead writer. Not many other albums could have Why Don’t We Do It In The Road followed by I Will .
- While I still can’t remember if I ever actually owned Venus And Mars it is amazing how memory works on song lyrics. I haven’t heard this album in 25 years or so and yet was still able to sing along to Rocky Raccoon as if it was yesterday.
- Unfortunately I don’t have the mono albums to compare with just yet, and won’t be able to afford them for some time – but just from the stereo ones I have been listening to this is the first one that struck me as having a really great stereo mix. Sgt. Peppers had some nice effects but this one just sounded so natural by comparison.
- I’m So Tired has aged awfully well – loved it.

I was always wondering why I never came across songs like The Long And Winding Road and Blackbird which I knew from youtube. Then google told me I had missed a whole Beatles album! You can imagine my happiness!
My love for this album is endless, it is perhaps one of my favorite. Maybe I’m listening to it as much as I do to make up for the time I didn’t have it, but I adore it nevertheless.

The White Album …this album represents a transitional stage for The Beatles.
I love all Beatles albums that is no doubt. And while I don’t have a definitive list of which albums is the best and the least best, I can surely put The White Album nearly on the top, probably behind Abbey Road & Sgt. Pepper .
I have indeed loved all the songs from this album, including the ones that didn’t make the final cut, though I would have followed George Martin & Ringo Starr ‘s conception of making either a strong single album or two single albums (White & Whiter album).
This is the period where the tensions started to dominate The Beatles circle, following the backlash of Lennon’s commentaries about Jesus, to the end of touring, passing through the death of their manager (Brian Epstein), their failure on their independent film effort (Magical Mystery Tour ), and the India trip, all leading to start thinking about doing things independently, solo. This is noticeable in several tracks of the album where the author of the song used the others more like assistants than actually work like a group, and some other tracks only had certain number of Beatles, and others more were done solo. I do agree with a comment that I read a long time ago about this album, and went something like this: ”Four solo albums in one”.
These tensions were so unbearable, that Geoff Emerick, their audio engineer since Revolver , quit and didn’t come back until The Ballad of John & Yoko around nine months later, and these went so far that Ringo also quit for two weeks and went replaced in the drums by the other three (mainly Paul) on Back In The U.S.S.R. and Dear Prudence .
For me, this album represents a shift in The Beatles status as a group, and starts to give signs of independence from all four members. There were still, songs that were actually full Beatles effort, like While My Guitar Gently Weeps (after Harrison brought Eric Clapton to play with them), Happiness Is A Warm Gun , Yer Blues , Helter Skelter or Revolution 1 , just to mention the ones I can recall right now.
The final result, is an approximately, 90 minute-30 song trip on The Beatles group and individual thoughts at the time, from parody to a Chuck Berry song, to the reclusive Prudence, Beatles lyrics references and Paul rumor’s, a ska-influenced from a phrase of a Nigerian friend, experiments, to a tale of a visitor going to a tiger-killer-spree and return to look for God , I Ching, magazines, dogs, addiction, civil rights, social commentary, revenge from a love rival, first song, wild & rough, love, mother, birthday, suicidal thoughts, lecture of nature, nonsense, Maharishi, dirty & raw rock n’ roll, found God , politic, music hall, love for chocolate, nursery rhymes, musique concrète, and lullaby.
It is probably, their most complex album lyrically, and that makes it one of their best. It reflects what was happening with The Beatles and what was about to come.
